Phil Clapp becomes the first man to complete 500m on the rowing machine in under 1 minute and 10 seconds. He completed 500m in 1 minute 9.8 seconds. Peaking at around 1350 watts and holding on to that as much as as he could to take the world record on the rowing machine.

Phil. 😍 As far as technique, this is a textbook example of how to put power into the erg. High rate leading to a shortened slide, high foot stretchers. Phil and I chatted a bit as I was learning to sprint and all of his advice was smack on. I'm really happy for him.

That is literally insane - I consider myself to be a sprinter and at 62 years old clocked 14.3 for the 100m (av pace 1:11.5/500m) and definitely saw a few strokes at 1:08/500m but to maintain that sort of power for 500m is incredible! It would be nice in these videos though to see the PM5 screen at the same time too to give some context...

@@CameronBuchan Of course I get that, but he was videoing - so if you are taking the trouble to do that you may as well go all the way!!! On another note, whilst I love your content, often you also do the same - just my little bit of feedback, as an erg rower, it is seriously interesting to see the PM5 display when someone is rowing because its almost impossible to get a sense of the effort and power that someone is rowing at simply by watching them row! It is my biggest frustration with nearly all youtube videos of erg rowing - just watching someone row with no context on the pace and power being input is not as satisfying as it could be - otherwise though excellent and interesting content from you....!

@@philiplowery thank you! Same thing though, Phil is just filming to show what he is doing and to gain proof. Not to make a vlog and show people. Different goal, different approach. Normally, strokes are meant to be efficient: making sure you can do that powerfull stroke for over 6 minutes. As his piece is only meant to be a minute long, he can do things that would be inefficient but effective, as he probably is nearly done before muscle fatigue of the fast twitch muscles starts to set in.
