I was telling a friend in an email earlier today, that we woodworkers spend as much time making tools and improvements to our workshops, as we do actually making things in our workshops. This one is definitely a worthwhile project, and easily the best dowel maker I've come across. I especially liked that the inserts could stored inside the tool to keep things tidy and to be able to find them the next time you wanted to use the tool. I am definitely getting shot on space to store all the jigs I've made, and I have only been into wood working for five years. I can see me making this project. I especially like the flexibility and being able to make dowels you can't find at the store. I like that you can make dowels out of any timber, and I like that be definition, you are going to have the tool to make holes the right size for the dowels you make. Yes, I can see this in my shop real soon now.

100% agree with you, I keep telling my friends that the table saw is like having all the tools in just one tool, it is a matter of jigs. I second you on the time we spend creating jigs, but a the end of the days it is more satisfying than a trip to the store. I also keep telling them that wood working bust creativity more than many other jobs.

If you made the lid longer, you could make it act as the tension for the inserts. Then cut the inserts 12-25mm shorter and add a screw in the middle to act as a handle and a precise way to adjust the tension against the lid. Would add a little work to do at first, but would eliminate the need for putting in screws to hold the inserts and removing the screw every time you want to change the insert. but that's just an idea to add to an already wonderfully designed dowel cutter.

In order to be cooking, you then need to turn the table saw into a range top, but I guess if you can go from a lathe to a table saw that step should be easy. Haha.

This is one of the best dowel makers I've seen. I've been making mine similar to this for years. I make mine with a 2x4. Small output hole, large input hole. Works great. What is the "Woodbin" part you put in your miter slot?

I’ve never liked the single pointed dowel makers as it seems they just chew the wood off as the speed is just so slow . This is such an elegant and much better solution to remove the material. Good work.

This is a much more dangerous version of a router driven, exact same thingy. This works, but never try it on oak. We once had a blade exploding on a workshop , the exposed blade is sensitive to side forces and at best it can skew, almost took one arm with it. Router however is much safer and more versatile as it easily can make cones as well as straight.

I'd assume with slower drill speeds and a properly sharpened saw blade that risk is minimized. The router variation you mentioned, is it just a plunge bit, or a straight edge or....?

100% . this is DEATH !!!!!1 it looks cool, but that blade the armature itself and the bearings it ride on are NOT designed for heavy SIDE LOADING. This is using a flamethrower to light sparklers except the sparklers are actually ticking time bombs. if set correctly and dialed in as the OP did , yes its a workable solution. Notice all safety equipment was removed as well. That bladed will break, or you will destroy the trueness of the blade in relation to both the fence and the outputshaft for the motor. A Table saw is a 5hp straight up, no fucks given motor basically directly connected to that blade, no transmission to fail or failsafe system ( even though saw stop is not goign to work here, if the blade fractured it would set the system off. You will loose fingers, damage your saw, damage the precision of the saw if not causing a catastrophic unscheduled rapid disassembly of that blade..... the 12" table saw blade run up to 7k RPM. This will kill someone.

Nice build. Extending the top, so that it clamps the two changeable panels in place when closed, along with a Toggle Latch would dispose of having to screw the two panels in place every time.
