🇮🇩 Indonesian Street Food in Surabaya: • Back in Indonesia!! 🇮🇩...
👕 T-shirts: store.migrationology.com/
🌶 Ghost Chili: amzn.to/3PNTvNQ
SURABAYA, INDONESIA - Today we’re going to go eat the most famous Indonesian fried rice (nasi goreng) in all of Surabaya - it’s so well known that it typically sells out within 2 hours!
One of the greatest of all Indonesian street foods is nasi goreng, or Indonesian fried rice. He makes it expertly, sauteeing garlic and shallots in hot oil before adding egg, rice, and all the seasoning. Because we’re in Indonesia, you can take your nasi goreng to the next level with huge amounts of fiery chili sambal chili sauce, and even a little red tomato sauce to give you fried rice color and extra flavor. The thing that truly sets Nasi Goreng Cak Moo is how he fries your rice perfectly and dry in the wok so it’s extremely smoky!
No doubt, this was one of the best plates of Indonesian fried rice that I’ve ever had!

@@mady1605it’s actually the other way around. He decided to open that restaurant because he LOVES spicy food. His catchphrase “mai phet mai gin” (not spicy, not eating) was invented long before he even got this big, let alone opened a restaurant. He’s also half Chinese and that might contribute to his spice tolerance as well 😃

There are many types of fried rice; from Chinese Yangzhou chaofan, Japanese yakimeshi, to Cuban arroz frito. They are different, but they are great in their own ways. Even if Indonesians and Malaysians call their respective version of the dish with the same term “nasi goreng” but they’re very different in flavors. I would argue that the Malaysian versions, even at their most basic forms like the Malaysian nasi goreng kampung, are still very “Chinese” in essence, while the many variants of Indonesian nasi goreng have evolved to very localized versions that are unique to the country. And you can clearly see that in this one example in this video. Thank you for this episode, Mark! Nasi goreng is a humble everyday dish, and I am hesitant to call it our national dish because our cuisine is so much more than just a method to save day-old rice, but I can’t argue that it’s considered one of our comfort food and with so much variety in the country it’s an endless topic to discuss. Cheers! 🍻 🇮🇩

Actually there is another famous version of Surabaya fried rice which usually called nasi goreng keluntung or cow bell fried rice because traditionally its sell in a cart with cow bell ring to notify or attract customers. This nasi goreng is similar to Central Java style which is cooked with charcoal stove and has sambal paste as main ingredient but Surabaya style is more towards salty taste than sweet. Unfortunately though, I think this type of fried rice is kinda rare nowadays

Indonesian style fried rice really is something you guys need to try at least once in Indonesia. It looks a bit more red than usual fried rice because of the tomato, soy, and chili sauce. Some cooks put beansprouts, cabbages, stink beans, or anything else in there to bulk up the portion. Meat is also a must for this fried rice, whether it be chicken, beef, or anything. Each part of Indonesia had their own version, some use Rendang spices, some use Javanese style spices, etc. I never tried Cak Moo's Nasi Goreng before, but from the map location it's pretty close to my college campus, so maybe I would try it next time 🤔🤔🤔

What caught my eye was the plate at 10:18! This design used to be ubiquitous in many homes in the Philippines back in the 70's and 80's, now it's difficult to find. Brings back memories seeing this in a Mark Wiens video.

I'm sorry, but as a Pinoy who has travelled across Southeast Asia, ours is the least tastiest. It's because the rice is hardly fried but just loaded with garlic, which makes it less tasty.

Nasi goreng in Surabaya region is mostly using red tomato sauce since most of them preferred it that way instead of sweet kecap manis like other region. there's just so many nasi goreng version in Indonesia 😅
