What is she talking about...there is soooo much emotion on the faces of the women he painted!!! In fact, I think that is exactly what distinguishes Utamaro above other ukiyo-e painters...with a minimal amount of lines, he is able to convey so much subtlety and depth of feeling. For me, the women in his paintings are practically jumping off the page. It's the photoshopped women on the magazine covers she seems to like that seem lifeless and devoid of real emotion. That detail of the green lower lip in the rediscovered print was something new to me, very cool.

After the floaty beginning of your opening, seeing NYC is no thrill. Who wants to see that? We are here for Japanese art & thus for Japan. Even photos of Japan would have been preferable. We later see you in Japan, am I right? Maybe not. And please don't worry about your most Japanese accent whilst pronouncing Japanese names & places. "Women chattering"? An unwelcome cliché. Why do you not interview Japanese people in your native tongue? Especially as your American is sooo Americanised, yet probably not as good as your Japanese? I'd have loved to have heard your Japanese. The comparison w Playboy Magazine is unworthy of what you seem to aim at here. The strict sense of rules mentioned has nothing to do w Playboy pornography. Utamaro painted erotica more than that, do you not agree? "We have lost the ability to see their emotions," a good tap on the wrist! But purely decorative art, as your Canadian colleague also suggests? I think not. We are too moved. Thanks for sharing, in any case.

mckavitt would just like to say I think this is an incredibly cynical and in my opinion unfair representation of what she’s doing with this documentary. It’s about the history of the art, not the language or the architecture of Japan. It’s not for you to dictate what language she feels most comfortable speaking. And the “women chattering” cliche? Are you implying that it’s sexist to call conversations between women “chattering”? What a reach.
