They're all fantastic, of course, but my favorites are Utamakura, Uwaki no so and Saru no koku. The delicate lines of the faces and necks seen from the back or in profile are soooo genius

I've always wondered why these ukiyoe artists depicted all women with badically the same kind of faces, lacking any kind of individuality. Could you do a video on this subject?
@MieGalleryАй бұрын
Yes, I will do a video on that, but there are a lot of nuances in every artists depiction of women and a lot of personality. I think it does come through. It’s a good topic thank you.

Not a Japanese art expert, but a Western art expert: rigid and very narrow female beauty standards in art/media are universal. Those standards were set by the men of whatever time period and region the art/media occurs in. I have always been amused by period pieces in 70s cinema in particular. Whether the movie/TV show/whatever is set in the 1880s, 1920s or 1940s, the women’s bodies, clothes, hair and makeup are precisely what was considered ideal in the 1970s. Hopefully we’re getting past this in this day and age. Or soon…
@MieGalleryАй бұрын
@@kerriganm I doubt we'll ever get past it - I think the need to invent new looks is tied to our human nature, the need to stand out and be attractive to all sexes. But I am seeing a broadening of styles with the new " identifications" that are becoming popular. Heck, even the cyber world has a whole set of otherworldly beauty conventions.

@@MieGallery I followed Dave Bull's lead on this: add adsense to this account to then disable all ads. Excellent work btw. Not sure that was a letter though...
