Fantastic acting by Pacino in that scene using his inner monologue. Michael's reaction to Fredo's slip of the tongue wasn't one of shock, it was one of confirming a suspicion he prayed would be wrong. Utterly heartbreaking. 💔

Loving this reaction and thank you for being so generous with it, putting it into two parts. Listen: nobody catches everything in this movie the first time you see it. I've seen it a million times and I'm STILL noticing things I never got. Definitely don't feel like it's YOU who is confused; most everybody is confused the first time they see it! I don't get into this "which one is better"; you need both! First one has Brando! Second one has De Niro! You can't have the second one without the first one, and the first one just starts and drags you from beginning to end effortlessly, a great achievement. This one has a bold structure going back and forth in time, so it gets points for originality! I love the De Niro part of Part 2 and the whole of Godfather Part 1 the best. And all the stuff with Frank Pantangelli!

Roth set up the attack on Frank. He instructed the hit man to say 'Michael Corleone says hello!' and then leave frank alive, thinking Michael had turned on him. It was very cleverly set up. That's why Frank accepted the FBI's deal to testify against Michael. Loved the intro, too.
@SirLuciferVampiro

SMH, I hate to rain on your parade but you're completely wrong about Roth wanting to leave Frank alive, lol.....They did not meant to leave Frank alive, it was an accident that he's still alive. No mobster will ever go through the trouble of pretending to kill someone and then leave them alive at the very last moment, lol. That is a ridiculous notion....They based this scene on a true incident. the only reason "Frank" is still alive is because that Cop walked in on the killing which is exactly what happened to the real life victim......
@xn9tj
@xn9tj Жыл бұрын
@@SirLuciferVampiro So incredibly loud and wrong, and stop typing like a smug reddit neckbeard at people and truly think hard on this with that big brain of yours: Why would they intentionally say that clear lie about Michael hitting him if they were actually going to kill Frank? What does that do? Nothing. What benefit does Roth have on killing Frank? Literally nothing. It was orchestrated to be very conveniently disrupted by a cop they had in their pocket The target is and always was Michael, they botched their first hit on him at his home, so there was no way they'd get another chance to kill him. So Roth used the senate lawyer Questadt that he had in his pocket, with FRANK TESTIFYING, to take Michael down through the committee WITH FRANK

That man sitting with Vito at the play watching the girl is Genco Abbandando, Vito's original consigliere. He was supposed to die of cancer in the first "Godfather". There was a scene that was cut, where Vito visits him in the hospital on his deathbed. In the book, Genco asks Vito to not allow God to take him, which is a testament to Vito's power, but of course, he had no control over that, letting the readers know that, as powerful as he was, he was still only human. Oh, and Vito names his olive oil import company, Genco Pura, (a front for illegal activity) after Genco Abbandando.

No need to be afraid of Michael... just play it straight with him. Do not double cross him, because he operates 100% on trust. Where everybody ran into trouble was he believed you were trustworthy, but you weren't . He can't have people around who he cannot trust. Wait until you see who he cannot trust. He makes no exceptions for anybody who he cannot trust.

You're right. In comparison to Vito, when Michael experienced loss, he had more family, was older and was in a better position all around. And look at how cold and ruthless he ended up becoming.
@chandie5298
@chandie5298 Жыл бұрын
Vito's experience as a child of losing his entire family caused him to value family over all else. Michael never experienced that loss when he was a child. Michael grew up with his father being a rock of strength and Michael viewed that strength as being the most important thing. Also, two events change Michael drastically. The attempt on his father's life and then Apollonia's murder. Those two events completely harden Michael's heart and change him into the cold, calculating Don he becomes.

Great reaction Aria like always, this is the finest example of when a sequel is superior to its predecessor. The Godfather Part II is one of the best films of all-time. A masterpiece. It's that simple. And some fun facts about this movie, Robert De Niro spent four months learning to speak the Sicilian dialect of Italian in order to play Vito Corleone, and he only speaks eight words of english during the movie. Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro are the only actors to win Oscars for playing the same character, no wonder that this movie won six Academy Awards, and it is the first sequel to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. And this masterpiece of cinema is known for its memorable quotes. Lines like “Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer” have entered the lexicon of popular culture and are often referenced and quoted. Keep up the amazing work.

@@voidmstr Wrong, (even in CAPS). My parents went to Ireland and found old court records in the 70s during the "Roots" genealogy fad. I also have letters between my great grandmother and her family who remained behind in which the clerical change is specifically mentioned. Aria, were you born cute, did you become so overnight, or was it a gradual process? 😅😊 Loved that intro so much. You're easily my favorite KZbin reactor. "The Godfather Part II" is widely considered the best movie sequel ever made, and I absolutely agree with that. I like it even better than the first movie. While Part I entertains me more, Part II intrigues me so much more. It gives us a greater look at the Corleone family empire, and a great background story with Vito's rise to power. Don't let anyone dissuade you from checking out Part III. It's definitely weaker than the first two, but it's way overhated. I still like it.

1974 had in my opinion the greatest 2-way competition for Best Picture in Oscars history (this and CHINATOWN). Both received 11 nominations each (GODFATHER 2 won 6 including Picture and Director while CHINATOWN won only 1 for Original Screenplay). This was a rare time where I wouldn't have complained one bit if Best Picture was a tie between the 2. I personally consider CHINATOWN to be one of only 5 movies I've seen to be perfectly executed in all aspects of filmmaking.

And don't forget "The Conversation" was the same year and was ALSO nominated for Best Picture. And the fourth nominated? "Lenny"! You want to see four unbeleivably fantastic masterpieces? Lenny, Conversation, Chinatown, Godfather Part 2. And a career high for all these starring actors: Dustin Hoffman (one of his best), Gene Hackman (one of his best), Jack Nicholson (one of his best), Al Pacino, Robert Duvall and Robert De Niro (each one, one of their best). What a year for acting, huh? Nineteen-seventy-frickin'-four. And people actually tell reactors to watch the dopey third one, rather than REVELING in the masterpieces that came out that year.....and then the next year, with Dog Day Afternoon (or the year before with Mean Streets and Serpico)....go backwards to Bonnie & Clyde, or forwards to Network, and All The Jazz, then you got Kubrick blowing minds, and Woody Allen and frickin' stuff like Deliverance or Man Who Would Be King or Paper Moon or Carnal Knowledge.......it was an amazing era. And 1974, wow, that was some year.

It was Hyman Roth that tried to kill Michael. Michael knows this, but tells Roth that it was Frank Pentangeles to throw Roth off. When Michael talks to Frankie, he tells him the truth. Roth sends people after Frankie and one of ROTH'S men (Danny Aiello) says to Frank "Michael Corleone says hello." THAT'S why they leave Frankie alive. When Michael asks Roth about Frankie he implies that Frankie is dead, even though he knows that Frank is still alive. Unfortunately, Frank IS fooled by what the thug said to him, and that's why he testified against Michael. Fredo tells Michael that he had never met Roth or Johnny Ola, but states at the nightclub that "Johnny knows these places like the back of his hand.". Vito doesn't kill Fanucci because he hates him. Vito witnesses Fanucci get his throat cut by two muggers. Fanucci survives, but nothing happens to the two men. Vito realises that Fanucci is not actually a member of the Black Hand, and if he can be attacked on the street with impunity, why should Vito pay him?

It all fell apart because the studios wanted to pay Al Pacino 75% more than Robert Duval, he refused and walked away, they had to rewrite everything. By the way if you watch Part III please do not choose the one that says "Coda", it cuts the final scene that is very important.

So funny how you say Wito 😂😂😂it's really kinda cute. In modern Italian the 'v' is clearly pronounced so it's Vito. But you're not entirely wrong as ancient Latin (from which Italian is descended) did pronounced the V's as W's. So for example the famous words of Julius Caesar: Veni Vidi Vici (I came, I saw, I conquered) in Latin would have been actually: Weni, Widi, Wici.

Aria, would you like to come to my house for a cup of coffee? We could be friends. Also I would love it if you would allow me to watch GODFATHER II with you. With all my respect and wishes for your good health.
