I'm 70 and still remember seeing The Godfather in the theaters in 72. I've re-watched it on TV countless times since. Every single aspect of movie-making is about as perfect as you can get in this film. Casting, acting, soundtrack, cinematography, lighting, directing, screenplay, you name it. I love this movie. Now here's the best news... Part 2 is just as good, and some say even better than the first. If you liked this, you'll surely love Part 2.

Brando was only 47 years old when he made this film. They made him up to look older and padded him to make him look heavier - he was in great shape at the time. After the attempted assassination, The Godfather was never the same. Brando's acting is sublime. He carried himself in every way like an old man feeling a lot of aches, pains and weakness. He did not go over the top with it, it is so subtle, you don't notice it. In the slightest shift of weight from one foot to the other or a slight movement of his head, he communicated - "I'm stiff and in pain". Nobody could touch Brando in movie acting skill.

About Michael: The beginning of the film is just after the end of World War 2. At the wedding, Michael is wearing a WW2 US Marine Corps officer's uniform. The insignia on his shoulder epaulets show his rank is Captain, an officer commanding a Company of 160-200 men. The ribbons on the left front of his jacket are : top row left to right Silver Star (3rd highest award for combat valor with serious risk to own life), Navy and Marine Corps Medal (highest award for non-combat life saving valor with serious risk to own life), Purple Heart (for being wounded in combat), 2nd row left-most ribbon is WW2 Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with 2 Stars (indicates participating in a total of 3 Pacific Island battles). Prior to being promoted to Captain, as a 2nd Lieutenant and then 1st Lieutenant he would have commanded a platoon of 40-50 men. He is a combat veteran who has commanded a significant number of men (40-50, later 160-200), is trained and experienced in tactics (attacks, defense, ambushes, maneuvering for position, etc., as well as individual combat actions), taking decisive action and clear thinking in stressful situations, been promoted through 3 officer ranks (2nd Lieutenant -> 1st Lieutenant -> Captain), shown personal bravery in both combat and dangerous non-combat situations, been wounded in combat, and seen some of the bloodiest battlefields of WW2. Most of those battles had very intense hand-to-hand combat, no just shooting, as the almost always ended with desperate Japanese soldiers making massed banzai charges. At the wedding and throughout the movie, he is almost always the most experienced, hardened killer in the room. The older mafiosi laugh at him for proposing to shot Tattaglia and the police captain, but really have no idea what his experiences are or how coldly ruthless he will be to decisively defeat/eliminate his enemies.

I love love love the scene when Enzo's trembling after the gangsters leave, Michael lights Enzo's cig, then pauses to look at his own hand for a moment; rock steady, no fear at all. This is the moment he realizes he's capable of being a man just like his father, no matter what he said to Kate.

This is an actual plot hole. Michael the war veteran does not tremble after seeing a couple of mafia thugs in a car? He surely saw way worse and was in way more dangerous situations. He should know at that point how he reacts to those stressful life threatening incidents. The scene was made for the on screen effect, but it actually lacks logic. We get a few scenes that establish the characters' traits and present us Michael as a worthy leader. The news of his father's shooting. He stays collected and instead of getting emotional like Fredo he goes through the papers and in seconds analyzes the information available coming up with the correct assesment that there is no confirmation his father was dead. At the hospital he immideately informs the family. He is multitasking not letting the nurse leave while he is talking on the phone and quickly implements her into his plan. He does the same with Enzo. As opposed to it for example we get scenes with Santino getting carried away, be it the scenes around Conny's marriage or when he is straight up insulting Tom comparing him to Genco and then apologizing seconds later.

In a war setting, Michael would presumably have a gun, and be morally pure cuz he's an authorized soldier of his country; in this scene, Michael goes full gangster, and FAKES THOSE GUYS OUT WITHOUT EVEN HAVING A WEAPON. Doesn't seem like a plothole to me at all.

Fun Fact: the cat in the first scene was just a stray that happened to randomly wander on set, and seemed to take a liking to Brando and jumped right on his lap, and Brando just rolled with it for the scene and stayed in character (and it's great, because it shows how Vito is an actual human being who loves pets just like anyone).

I wonder why no one ever mentions legendary John Cazales performance (Fredo). Cazale was a theatre-man, he appeared in only 5 movies. All of them were nominated for best picture, three of them won. His girlfriend at that time was a young aspiring actress who some said to be the greatest talent of her generation. Her name was Meryl Streep. I read in an article (about her biography) that the years with Cazale shaped, who Streep would become as a person and an actress. Al Pacino said that he learned more about acting from Cazale than from anyone else. For his last role, Robert de Niro covered the costs for Mr. Cazales insurance. Mr. Cazale was terminally ill, only months from death and the amount for his insurance was more than the studio was willing to pay. To stay with him, Meryl Streep accepted to be part of the movie, too. It was Michael Ciminos "The Deer Hunter". This guy was so good, that you don´t realize how good he is.

By the way, that was a real severed horse head and the screaming by the actor was legit. During rehearsals, they had used a fake head and coppola didn't like it. So, some production crew members went to a nearby dog food factory (yes, back in the day, horse parts were usedin the mix) and bought the head. When they prepared to shoot the scene, they didn't tell the actor in order to get a real response. The got it as the actor freaked out. It was the only take. Oh, and the line, "take the cannoli," was an improvised line by actor richard castellano.

Hi Aria, another fantastic reaction. I don't need to say anything about this movie, because enough people have already commented on it. I will say that as great of a movie this is, it is one that I do not watch over and over again, and I don't know why, because I do enjoy what it is. I really enjoyed how you dove into this movie and followed it so well. Your summary of the movie was wonderful. On a personal note, I must say that you have become one of my favorite movie reactors on KZbin. I enjoy how you watch a variety of movies. You deserve a lot more subscribers than you have. There are people out there who do not know what they are missing with you. I love it when reactors actually watch and absorb the movie, rather than just talk through it the entire way. Thank you for mentioning "On The Waterfront", I have a personal story to share with you about that movie. My grandmother lived in Hoboken, New Jersey, which is where Waterfront was filmed. Not only was it filmed in the town my grandmother lived in, it was filmed in her neighborhood. The playground at the park is where she played when she was a little girl, and the shots atop of the buildings, one of those buildings is where she lived. Unfortunately, my grandmother had moved to California before they started filming. She heard about this from a friend of hers and she was so upset, because she didn't get to see Marlon Brando, whom she had a huge crush on. Thank you so much, Aria, for all that you bring to these reactions, you are most delightful, fun and charming. I am really looking forward to the day when you watch "Heat". That is a favorite of mine and an excellent movie. There are lots of movies I could suggest for you to watch, but I'll save that for another time as I can see how long this message has become. Now you should do The Godfather Part II. But when you get to part III, only watch the version titled “The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone” since it’s presented not as a sequel to The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, but rather as an epilogue to a two part story the way Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo intended.

I can't believe you did the "On The Waterfront" speech! I believe you may be the first reactor to do this movie and know Marlon's iconic, groundbreaking early work! Wow!/ By all means watch Heat and Scarface but DO NOT miss the movie he (and Fredo) made the year after the Godfather Part 2: "Dog Day Afternoon" THAT is one of his greatest, most iconic performances. (both of them, actually). And "Donnie Brasco" (1997), with Johnny Depp. That's his best 90s performance and a totally different kind of mob character. Don't miss those two, DEFINITELY not "Dog Day Afternoon". It's CRIMINAL there's not enough reactions....and it's because of people telling reactors to watch the crappy third Godfather. There are literally about six or seven much better alternatives to "graduate" on to from the "Godfather Part 2", and every reactor gets suckered in to doing the crappy third one. "Dog Day Afternoon" is one of the greatest of the 70s, right up there with The Godfather, I'm sure if you look at any list of greatest movies ever, greatest 70s movie ever, greatest Pacino films ever, that's on the list. Heat is good, it's a 90s action movie elevated by Pacino and De Niro, but it ain't anywhere near either of those actors' greatest performances/movies.

That was a nice one! It is a dialogue heavy movie that would probably not be made nowadays anymore. You are totally right, a lot of stories for one movie, and this alone makes it worth watching. The follow-ups are definitely worth watching, too. A very interesting thing is, that these movies were made against the will of the Mafia at first, but because they show a very mild, idealized version of them, it did not come to heavier action against it. Many Mafia members actually later confessed, that the movies show how they wanted to be seen, that they portray them in a way, that they could identify with. (As loving family members, that are 'forced' to do what they do by the circumstances, as if they have no choice ... which is of course not realistic by any means.) Otherwise, this kind of movies would probably not even exist. In the excellent mafia tv series "The Sopranos" it even was a running gag, that one mafia member re-enacts a scene of Al Pacino in "Scarface" all the time. These kind of movies actually are admired by real Mafia members. That does not make them less fun. 🙂 Great reaction. Keep a bit track of your sleep, don't get exhausted by doing reactions, health first. ;-) Have a good end of the week, I am always looking forward to what comes next on your channels, always fun to watch!

There's so much trivia, memes and theories about this film, it's absolutely astounding. So, in keeping with Godfather tradition, I'm going to introduce a new one. Everyone knows seeing oranges in a scene is a prelude to tragedy. Howevr, If you listen closely as Carlo is walking to his final demise, you can hear Ravens cawing in the background. A Raven is a sign of ill omen.

I love this film so much, I consider it as an absolute piece of art just like paintings, I enjoy every scene while the sound track is taking me to another world, sometimes I wish I lived in the 70s so that I could watch it for the first time when it was revealed, I feel so emotionally connected with it, absolute perfection

It's funny because Pacino was a 'nobody' back then and the studio was adamant about him not playing Michael. They didn't want a nobody. Coppola fought for him to play Michael. People now know Pacino as a star but back then it was anybody's guess as to how his character would develop. But you CAUGHT a lot of the plot quite well and that was impressive!

Welcome to experiencing one of the greatest films in cinema history. Loved your reaction to it. The only better way would have been in a theater (though I'm 52, and have seen the trilogy countless times, i was fortunate enough to have seen the three of them, back to back to back, on the big screen last year). Looking forward to you watching Parts 2 (arguably even better than the first) and 3 - preferably The Coda version (though the theatrical version was the weakest of the trilogy, it was a strong enough film, on it's own, to earn 7 Oscar Nominations).

There's so much stuff happening subtextually and thematically in The Godfather I and II that elevates them as dramas. You can enjoy them at the surface level or look a bit deeper. All of Francis Coppola's 70s classics are like this, too. "The Conversation" is my favourite, I'm legitimately fascinated by that film, as well as "Apocalypse Now." Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I enjoyed your reaction.

THE TO AL PACINO MOVIES THAT YOU MENTIONED ARE AWESOME MOVIES, BUT MAY I ALSO SUGGEST "DOG DAY AFTERNOON"! IT WAS RELEASED AROUND THE SAME TIME AS THE GODFATHER SO AL PACINO'S AGE IS ROUGHLY ABOUT THE SAME!! ONE OF HIS BEST ROLES FOR SURE AND THE ACTOR WHO PLAYED FREDO IS ALSO IN DOG DAY AFTERNOON!!

The actor who played Fredo is named John Cazale. He holds an interesting record. He starred in only 5 feature films, but all of them received Oscar nominations for Best Picture. Pacino has said many times that he learned the most about acting from working with John Cazale. Pacino did theater work with Cazale along with two more films: GODFATHER PART II, & DOG DAY AFTERNOON.

8:44 Michael just returned from Europe where he was an officer in Marine combat unit. His dad didn't want him in the family business & was hoping he'd make a big impact in a profession. If you like Brando, watch "Julius Caesar" made in 1953...he's Marc Anthony and does the best acting of his life up to that point, expressing Shakespeare's dialog like an expert on his first time out.

1:57, since you're having a minor case of Insomnia, Maybe your next Pacino film should be the one called..Insomnia, 2002...Al's a cop in Alaska , Hillary Swank is his partner trying to nail a serial killer, played with scary authority by none other than Robin Willams...It's an offer you can't refuse! FYI: The "cop " who shot Barzini at the courthouse..Al Neri. He was a real cop-too honest for dirty officers like McClosky, so they framed him on a fake murder. Don Vito read about the case and had Tom get him aquitted,. Grateful, Neri joined the family as MIcheal's right hand and stayed with him for life.(He's in all 3 Godfather films)

The movie could had been even longer 4.5 hours at least with all the stuff they cut out, especially the Sonny scenes. I don't fault the producers and directors for this because they would had slowed the movie down with all those character building scenes. The general audience wouldn't like that back then. Three plus hours with an intermission was a long time (and even worse now because audiences are starting to complain that 2 hours is too long for a movie). But a real fan of "The Godfather" will look at "The Godfather Saga" which is the Godfather I & II combined into one long movie with almost all of the cut scenes of the two movies added back in, some 7.5 hours plus of fun!

When Michael was in the bathroom at Louis Restaurant right before he shot McCluskey and Sollozzo, he heard the elevated subway train pass by, making a lot of noise, so he improvised. He waited for the next train to come along, knowing the noise would act to cover the sound of the gun shots.

Coppola was always in danger of being fired by the studio. They opposed the casting of Brando and Pacino and hated the way the film was lit, especially in the opening scene. And initially the mafia didn't want the film made. That he was able to make the film at all under such enormous pressure is amazing, much less make a classic.

The 1970s was a hell of a decade for movies. Easily the greatest group of Best Picture Oscar winners ever (I've seen all 10 of the winners). So good that even if my personal pick of the group didn't win, it at least lost to another deserving film. I highly recommend seeing other Best Picture winners and nominees from that decade, especially the 2nd GODFATHER, CHINATOWN, THE DEER HUNTER, THE CONVERSATION (coincidentally also directed by Francis Ford Coppola and also released in 1974, the same year as GODFATHER 2), ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST and more. 1974 had IMO the great 2-way competition for Best Picture ever (CHINATOWN and GODFATHER 2, with GODFATHER 2 winning).

Yes, the opening dialogue sets the tone and depicted the power of Don Corleone. You dont ask just anyone to give justice to having your daughter beat up. "Why didn't you come to me first?" That says it all right there. In the book, Clemenza and a couple of his guys waited for the 2 guys to come out of a club and then they just beat them the hell up within an inch of their lives.

about apollonia; michael didn't want to be a mobster and so had a girlfriend as old school american wasp [white anglo-saxon-protestant]. after the solozo/hospital incident michael realizes he's suited to the life and is being pulled in. traditionally, a man can't be a full member of the italian mob unless both his parents' families can be traced back to sicily, so it wasn't just that kate wasn't suited to the mob life, but also, if apollonia had lived, their sons could one day inherit the family business, but kate & mike's sons would be challenged. this movie is replete with memes. also, watching you anticipate what was coming, you could be a formidable mobster's wife … aria is even a prestigeous name.
