• 1/2 The Mark of Beauty...
First broadcast: Apr.2012.
This new-style art program provides lucid, 3-step insights into things of beauty around us. The theme this time is the silk fabric known as tsumugi. There are 2 main kinds of kimono fabric. One is the dyed kimono on a white base. The other is the fabric woven from dyed strands. This kind is called tsumugi when it is made from silk. Both the colors and patterns tend to be plain and austere but a lot of work goes into making these highly regarded, top quality kimonos. The tsumugi weaving technique is said to date from the Nara period some 1,300 years ago when peasant women made it as work clothing using damaged cocoons. Even today, the wearing of tsumugi is considered unacceptable on highly formal occasions. It is distinguished by its plain colors and rough texture but this hand-woven cloth is light, warm and durable and kimono connoisseurs are firmly attached to the tsumugi allure. We even hear talk of young women who only wear Western-style clothing now being drawn to tsumugi garments. It is a fabric both nostalgic and new for Japanese today.

Breathtaking. My heart swells at this level of mindfulness and respect in craft. Time is certainly an excellent measure of power in art.

@@MarcusCato275 Hello Jeikobu! I was wondering what region you live in. Yes I agree. I think I replied to you, on another post. I must admit, at one stage I was always watching NHK international. I just loved it. I did eventually visit Japan too. I even visited the NHK Studios at Shibuya (Domo!) but was incredibly underwhelmed by the International section. The little children area where they could play was awesome. Being a big kid myself I loved watching them go silly. I bought some meterage of white habotai in hong kong but I have no idea what to do with it. I also got some figured jacquard light pink silk I have no idea to do with either. Well, it was on sale 😆 I am very jealous you have a tsumugi. Is there a market for second hand tsumugi I had a wonderful time in NK, I had so much fun there, I met so many lovely people who were very passionate.. like the girls in Avril in Kichijoji and the owner of the antique shop over the bridge in Gion. The celadon there was amazing. I took some home 😆😆😆

@@MarcusCato275 Oh my! The celadon i bought was pretty much the most humblest things in that lady's shop ( although, I did eye off the netsukes) They are merely sweets dishes and if I recall, the lady said they were from the 1970s. I have always loved that luminous bluey green colour since I was little and the things she had... All this pierced and figured vases.. massive bowls, massive vases and other things I nearly fainted I had a hard time trying to convert yen to $Aud. I do remember she looked puzzled when this westerner lady (me) walked in and I may have appeared ridiculously excited. I did behave! 😄 Of course she had other styles of things there too. I have always been drawn to the older shops there and ones that continue good workmanship. The guide I had was confused that l insisted on visiting this canvas bag shop in the middle of boring modern outer business area Kyoto.. He thought I would just want to visit temples and shrines like most tourists 😂😂we even had to get a local bus there. Maybe I have watched way too many shows on craftmanship... I just wanted to have a little piece of their work www.ichizawa.co.jp/en/products/details/56.html I love purple and that crossbody bag is so useful. I wish I had a bigger budget on my trip to be honest. I am not interested in touristy garbage. I saw soooooo many things there like a whaling knife in a kitchen shopping district in Osaka. Annnnnd all the other knives. I did get a wooden sake drinking set from Mitsukoshi down in Ginza though. That place is not cheap! 🤣🤣 I did consider finding a light summer casual kimono but was unsure of prices. Ie, I wanted a proper one from a proper shop and be fitted. No wonder your father was incredibly considerate to you to get you your clothes! That is the sort of thing you can hand down to your great great grandchildren.. I don't have many nice things, but I do it with thought though. Ooh, if you are after nice hk chinese tea sets there is a nice one called Jabbok on Argyle street in Mongkok. You sound like you have so many lovely things and you should take pride in them ♥️
