1/2 VW Aero Engine running on Arduino based ignition system

This is the first test run on my developed ignition system that is based on an Arduino Nano for the timing and some Beru ignition components. RPM signal is collected by a ZF gear sensor.
I was a little scared to run the engine faster than 2400 RPM. I have to find a more stable surrounding for the test stand.

Looks like he is not afraid of anything. Even the title made me shiver. I use the Arduino Nano boards, because it’s the cheapest way to get even the parts. But as an ignition system for a (small) aircraft?!? Some motors use dual spark systems with completely independent ignition electric/electronics behind for good reason. Is there no air traffic regulation? Here in Germany you even need a full certification for tv-models of a certain size.

@@fromgermany271 Being a born-criminal , I don't really care about certification. But the reliability of an aircraft engine is not an empty word for me. Dual-spark system you just mentioned - is a generally accepted and correct solution.Therefore, I would stick with this concept: I would make two independent ignition circuits, each with its own "arduino", and i would pour the arduino-boards over in a layer of compound, and placed them into metal cases to exclude the influence of external electromagnetic interference. And no clamps! Soldering only!

been around planes 40 years it doesnt mean jack %et# if your doing it wrong and dangerously to test and have 50 years, time to relearn its that simple.

exactly. better than that been around planes 40 years, seen many run without prop just a weighted plate on the flywheel bolts dont need a prop to test , and use a drill to start it . you dont need a prop on it to test the bloody machine , and you can put a crank bolt and use a drill to start it = way safer.

Would putting ignition timing after TDC during the hand cranking phase help starting the engine?

It would be idiotic not too. Would make hand proping much safer.

Yes. Magnetos retard the timing to After TDC at low rpm.

Lots of automotive rodders are building various homebrew EFI/ ignition so I get this but the question is, DO YOU really want something powering an airplane with experimental ignition system such as this? I doubt? it is redundant? (Dual ignition?)

shooo. dangerous. that prop is totally invisible at speed. paint the prop tips silver or dayglow yellow so you can see it to prevent a horrible accident
