You need to quit apologizing for little things that might not be perfect. This is an amazing job you're doing. Few people have either the patience or skills to build a model as good as you do.

The large spools are for the heavy manila mooring lines, and they were a khaki color. Your work on the kamikaze damage is amazing. You might find it interesting to note that the upper portion of the pilot's corpse was found on deck. The Captain of the Missouri specifically made sure that the young pilot was buried at-sea with full military honors.

I really like the fact that you show the work on all the little details, a lot of people just show the large bits and are done with it. This helps out the way you do it because it gives people the little bits of information that is needed to make the kit look awesome. Thank you

Thanks Rich! That is exactly the "kind" of videos I set out to make. My working assumption is that you know how to glue plastic parts together already.... so I try to show the "gotcha" points of any kit. And what I do to try and make things better. The BEST, is when folks leave comments that help out with the build even further! It's like we are all working on it together then.

My wife and I were fortunate enough to not only see the dent in the ship left by the kamikaze plane from less than three feet away and were told the entire story of that event from the crash to the burial at sea of the pilot. It was a very emotional experience.

I thought the MO was cool when I first saw it but when I accidentally stumbled onto the plaque where the surrender was signed… it hit me hard. I think because I basically spent my entire youth studying and idolizing those who fought in WWII and that got me.

Slowly, but surely, it's coming on well. I liked the little nod to the Japanese pilot. Apart from anything else, it's good to learn a bit about the stuff you're building - or watching someone else building. A few hours watching KZbin usually leads me to a few on Google, just finding out what the **** I've been watching. Enjoying this build and looking forward to the next episode. Funny, I can't say that about ANY t.v. series.☺ Cheers for now, Dougie.

And, I appreciate the acknowledgement and respect paid to the Japanese pilot who gave his life for his country, as well as the respect to our vets who gave their lives for us. Don Nicoll He names the Japanese pilot trying to kill the US sailors on board. Did he name any of the sailors on board?.My dad was a sailor in the Pacific during WW11 and he never talked about it. Give me a break and do some historical research on the atrocities of the Japanese war machine. I have, and I am a Vietnam vet. Give credit to your own warriors before you give it to those that killed them.

@@jackmorris2999 Hi Jack. I am Irish and so was my Dad. He didn't have to but he volunteered for the British army in WW2. Fought mainly against Germans and Italians but near the end went to the far east. Like your Dad he did not speak much about the war years which for him were 5. To his dying day he would not allow Japanese products into the house but did allow German or Italian. Respect to you for your Nam service. I have no concept of what you went through though the madness of it To me is summed up well in the last 5 minutes of Hamburger Hill. I live in a smallish apartment so space is an issue. I'm so glad that someone decided to mention the fact that if this guy's explosives went off, that there would've been plenty of dead American sailors. Keep in mind that these pilots were fanatically willing to die for the emperor and the Japanese EMPIRE, not the country. Very different from our reason for fighting. Anyway great build! Nice work Ben. The 40MM quad mount ammo storage racks must have been challenging. The bigger reels should be for hawsers, i.e., large lines that are used to haul the ship into the pier and secure her and the small winches, port and starboard , are to load the 16" projectiles down to the magazines. There should be some loading hatches and a temporary rig (probably stowed in this case) close to each turret ring. All of the ladders (especially on your fine model of the ARIZONA) all have a purpose; I think of how you would get to a station and they all become common sense, like the 40MM mounts.; How do I get over that armor plate to service the gun.Again great work on the model.

I never looked so closely at the Missouri deck edge detail as this video just did. It looks as if that kit is missing an obvious detail of the "curb" at the edge of the deck. Surprising given how much other detail there is and at such a large scale. This is not a critique of Ben's work; it looks amazing.

@@jeffreycohn3941 No it's on the edge of the deck outside the railing. There is a round "lip" or "curb" if you will, on the real thing. The model is just flat.

Okay, I thought about this for a while. (The Dent) I have worked for the navy now for almost 40 years, I now how the operate. The Dent was left there as a reminder to those who sail her as the future and its Wars are untold. The Ship lives though its Officers and Crew, the ships fighting spirit was shown that day in WW-2, it is dedicated to them through their Skipper and Command. the beliefs of a Fanatical people as the Imperial Japanese air command committing suicide isn't the reason the Dent was left there. It is a earned Battlescar of the "Mighty Moe"as "SHE CAN TAKE IT, WE CAN TAKE IT". They were in the heat of Battle, they were under fierce attack, however the Men fought the causality and the D.C. section responded keeping the Ship in the Fight. That is why the Dent is still there, Not to pay Honor to crazed ideologies where suicide is a warrior's way. So, I hope you remember that when you shake a hand of a Veteran for they fought battles for their friends and buddies, Not for Flags and Kings.

Were her decks ever that weathered? They look like they haven’t been cleaned in 5-10 years. Was she ever out of service that long?
@TheMidwestModelShop4 жыл бұрын
There is a general misunderstanding of how bad, one cruise, can mess up a Navy ship. I have included a few pictures in some of the videos of the ship at the surrender signing. The ship NEEDED paint BAD. But, this is MY interpretation of how she may have looked. And I like it.
@Captc57664 жыл бұрын
The Midwest Model Shop thanks for responding. I would expect that war itself is rough on the aesthetics of a warship. I would expect that there were areas that were painted and repaired. Surely the entire ship wouldn’t be repainted for every repair. I have some great pictures of the Norway at the end of her service life with large square patches of paint repairs. (I hadn’t thought of including that in model building) with areas of varying color and sheen. I have quite a bit experience with teak decking. I agree that fresh teak decks would be inconsistent with a weathered model. You’ve done a great job simulating authentic greyed teak. I don’t know how you did it. I’d like to try to simulate the foot traffic that would have made paths that kept the deck from greying. It would show the boat has been to busy to clean the decks and show the wear. I’ll bet there was oil spots too. Know what I mean? I like the hull damage you made from the plane impact . The crease looks perfect. Well done.

So I don't really keep track...but upon consulting my Wife, we think I have somewhere between 30-40 hours so far. How many will it take to finish? .....probably 4-500 more at the rate I'm going. I only say that because I have to build something like 30 20mm cannons, and 20 Bofors. That is going to eat up a lot of time. Then there are the ladders. Pontos gives you jigs to drill holes, and then you can install each and every rung. So... we will see how that all plays out.
