Thanks for the videos! I just stumbled across all of this stuff today and I've been in the rabbit hole for 4+ hours now. I've got my Amazon supplies list growing quite a bit. I'm very much looking forward to doing one of these myself. I still have my hand-painted 1701-D (no lights) by AMT that I did 32 years ago. Times have changed.

This the famous author Stephen King? If so you should also check out TrekWorks on youtube for how to light up your models and put in motors :D Well even if you're not the author you should do that too.

@@nemesis3295 No, not the famous author, but I get asked that every week. lol Thanks for the pointer. I will check out TrekWorks. I can't believe it has been a year since my post, but I can share that I now have all the parts/pieces for my build. Now I just need to find the time.

@@smking100 Oh xD Great things take time. I've had the 1/500 scale into darkness model for like 3 or 4 years now and I just got my airbrush like four days ago. I'm gonna first do the 1/1000 discovery enterprise first I think. I don't have electronics for either yet so I kinda need those still. Also paint. Masks. Knowledge lol.

Your video series for the Enterprise Refit is absolutely FANTASTIC!!! My friend and I are extremely excited to apply these techniques to our kits (I only have the much smaller Polar Lights 1/1000 refit) so, I'm not sure if there is a masking kit available for that scale as well. My friend has this large 1/350 scale version, however. Thanks for the in depth tutorial. The aztec'ing look gorgeous!

Thank you the nice comments. At this time the smallest kit we make is the 1/537. But who know what the future holds

MaskDesign Thank you! Yes, a 1/1000 mask kit would be fantastic. But, I can also see and understand how an aztec template like this can get super complicated and difficult as the model scales get smaller. I’m actually in the process of experimenting with some iridescent and pearl lacquer nail polishes to see what kind of results they produce. My daughters use iridescent nail polishes and, it sparked my curiosity.

In our test the pearl acrylic inks where nice and thin. Might be a better option for the 1/1000 scale. good luck with the build

@@maskdesign2478 Thank you, sir! I did find an aztec masking kit from "Cult TV Man's" website for the 1/1000 kit so, now I am very excited to start. I also bought the Pearl EX pigments from Michael's Art Store but, the set of 12 only has the interference gold and micro pearl so, I will need to find interference blue, green and red separately elsewhere.

I'm new to the aztec subject matter and have been studying it in depth for the past week. I'm an experienced model builder, but aztecing obviously adds a signifant layer of complexity then simply mask and paint. I'm aware of the "paint guide", but have not purchased it (yet?). Your videos raise more questions than they answer. For example, there is mention of "gold, green, red" paints, but these colors (or their explanations) are noticeable absent from the videos; removal of portions of the masks then return them later to same other other parts of the model (???). The important questions becomes, are these procedural steps outlined in DETAIL in the mask kit's instructions? Ideally, the kit instructions should also be stand alone and not require additional documentation such as someone else's paint guide. As an IT professional for the past 20+ years, I'm very experienced with dealing with truly complex issues. I've purchased many outstanding hardware and software products for my employers. However, these business grade HW and SW products have always included verbose, vague, just LOUSY documentation requiring weeks of puzzling over to implement. I perceive you have an outstanding product. The question then is how good is the documentation? Let's find out. Unfortunately, to my surprise, I couldn't find a link to download a pdf of the instructions. My goal like most amateur hobbyist modelers, is to replicate your outcome with the least time, effort, puzzling, and stress (the purpose of buying the kit to begin with, right?). That would require detailed step by step instructions (exact colors used, mix formulations, layer the masks and paints in a specific order, etc.). Anyway, appreciate you make the instructions available for download and review. Thx, F1

Fearless 1 We created the masking kit to work hand in hand with the paint guide, we are not creating are merely the masking to paint the model. Some builder like to use their own colors to create their own models that is why we do not get into the paint selections. However, there are some videos in our collection that outline what paints we used to crate our model, this was created to help those who need help with selections of paint. The removal and re-apply method is what we use to align masking for future steps, this helps those who are not that family with the masking process. As far as the instruction guide to all of our products are form in the ‘Files’ select of our Facebook page shown at the end of every video, these you can download and view at your pleasure. Hopefully all this helps and thank you for the question

at approx 4:08 you mentioned putting in 3 or 4 of each color after you had already removed the masks in each panel, indicating you would go over that later in the video - but you never did. So, after spraying the initial B, G, R ,Y is there more to be done on each panel? Thanks.
@maskdesign24782 ай бұрын
you put down a B, G, R and Y pattern over the black masking pattern, then once all the masking is removed you do the B, G, R and Y pattern again over each section

Can You use the Vallejo spray white primer, or is it recommended to use the acrylic?
@maskdesign2478 Жыл бұрын
You can use whatever you like but if it is lacquer based make sure it is very dry before applying masking. The fumes might melt the glue making it hard to remove. A good test is to smell the paint, if you smell fumes wait longer until there is no smell.
@ScottH-hn5mn Жыл бұрын
When you paint the gold, red, green how long do you wait for the paint to dry before you re-apply the masks and paint the next color?
@maskdesign2478 Жыл бұрын
it all depends on the paint you are using. For the inks we waited about 10-15 minutes.

I'm still trying to understand this process before I invest in one of the kits -- what color is painted on the saucer before any of the aztecing masks went on it?

We used Rust-oleum 2X Ultra cover white primer. It has a nice finish.
