Thanks, yes a lot of liberties were taken with the CGI Enterprise in the remastered TOS series. There is a never ending debate over what a "correct" looking Enterprise means. I just go by the motto that you should build it the way you like it which is what I do for my customer builds.

At least don't overdo the paintjob.... The Smithsonian is just being forgiven now for the 1991 "restoration" of the Enterprise shooting model! This time around, it looks a LOT closer to the TV series presentation. I just hope one or two of the changes they made internally (the bracing for the wood structure) don't come back to haunt them.

@@AvengerII I tried to match the Smithsonian Model when I repainted the 18 inch AMT TOS Enterprise a friend gave me 18 months ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYmyaWN-rKx5mtE It was my first Star Trek model in 24 years, but by watching Trekworks and Dr Faust Painting Clinic, I learned a lot.

The tiny detail that stood out for me was the light inside the Galileo shuttle craft, its little things like that that add the magic into these builds.

Nice work on the off set bridge. Many think the view screen faces forward, but how you have it is 100% accurate!

I highly recommend Boyd for any of your model building projects. This is the TOS 1/350 kit he built for me. Boyd's attention to detail, especially the color matching request I had, was spot on. Boyd kept me in touch with me throughout the process and he will confirm details and any specific configuration requests you may have had along the way. Importantly, the shipping container, if you are interested in this particular model, arrives in a custom foam case. Unlike other model builders who try to "rig" something, the packaging nearly assures a 100% chance of your model arriving in one piece. I tried a different builder on you tube, and it came broken, along with several other material defects. Bottom line this is a lifelong investment that is very rewarding if you are a Star Trek fan or for any of the other models that Boyd will make for you.

From seeing more and more of these kits go the "Aztec" route, I honestly think is one of the BETTER paintjobs I've seen on this model. They seem to go 1 of 3 routes with this model now -- 1) Aztec -- which was not on the original shooting miniature which anybody can figure out in 5 seconds if they watch the original UNremastered versions of TOS; 2) heavy weathering -- some can be nice but I think a lot of people are seeing more of it than I do; 3) a cleaner aesthetic that doesn't have the heavy weathering and which looks more like a lot of publicity photos of the 3-ft model. It's not about screen-accuracy, IMHO. It's about what looks good to you, and what you can live with after you pay the other guy to build and paint the model for you. I think that's a losing argument going from Pilot to Pilot, Season to Season, and seeing how the surviving 11-ft shooting miniature has been altered over the years. After hearing what they did to the TMP model between films, I give up... Just pick your film paint-job and live with it because they're all "screen-accurate!" LOL The customer got what what he wanted. Frankly, I think Floyd Goodson has better tastes than a LOT of us do! Wow, this one DID come out looking nice... even better than usual!

This is a work of art. In this day and age we should have been created one full size. As Americans we are getting behind do to wars and other conflicts. In 2020 I am running for president of the United States of America and I will make this happen. We need to move forward with technology instead of war.

I too sent you an e-mail to find out what it usually takes to get one built up. :) I was originally sticking going with them all in the smaller versions of the Enteprise and MAYBE eventually a big one of the Refit since I've always liked it but wondering about the original now instead. Hope to hear back soon to at least figure out what route I want to go! Love the videos and builds, they look awesome!

The model I'm building with the aztec paneling should be a fun and interesting build. The client has some unique ideas for the way it will be painted and also some different non cannon type lighting. Always fun to work on something outside of the box.
@AvengerII
@AvengerII 8 жыл бұрын
I'm okay with the Aztecs as long they aren't overemphasized. It should still be the point that the TOS ship was built with quite a bit different technology than the Refit. There's a lot of problems with the idea that the Refit was actually built 'on the bones' of the TOS Enterprise.... It's Gene Roddenberry's romanticism getting in the way of practicality and real-life ship building and modification practices. They don't tear down a ship and rebuild it like that! It's easier to build a new ship than to "recycle" so little of the previous and call it a "renewed ship." That just doesn't happen and people really shouldn't use the example of the US Navy modernizing its WWII-era carriers... While the flights decks and islands WERE modified along with the positions of the elevators, most of the ship below top decks is the same when originally commissioned in the 1940s down the original powerplants and crew compartments. The idea that any of these ships were torn down to their keels and rebuilt is preposterous! ************************ Getting off that slight tanget, I think the TOS ship by and large still works despite my reservations about the way the nacelles were attached... It's a structural weak point on all the models that fall this design. That's why a lot of the guys building half- and full-scale recreations of the 11-ft TOS Enterprise are reinforcing the nacelle struts. They could still droop because the Ship was never designed with 50-60 year model life in mind and it's a minor miracle that the "real thing" has survived as long as it has DESPITE the attempts to refurbish it! Yes, Aztecs are fine -- they look great in CG videos I've seen -- but additional lighting on the nacelles that I've seen hasn't looked bad either. I've seen lighting around the edges of the aft bulbs (haven't seen this in a model build; I've only seen in CG "paintings" like the "Ships of the Fleet" series) and blue warp lighting on the inside of the nacelles. Interior/blue nacelle lighting I have seen and I do think it adds something to the ship and makes the design pop out better. The rest of the Ship has fine lighting but I do think what I've seen on at least one build with the extra nacelle lighting was very nice. Not sure that I believe the modeller's story that he was told by Roddenberry that Roddenberry wanted this (internal blue nacelle lighting) on the 1960s Enterprise. I don't doubt the modeller's word -- it's Roddenberry I gotta question! The guy was known to tell people what they wanted to hear...
@AvengerII
@AvengerII 8 жыл бұрын
I think the drooping issue eventually happens to most TOS Enterprise models... regardless of the material they're made of. It's even happening with the 11-foot model in the NASM which has reinforced pylons. Short of providing string support (metal wiring, strong fishing line?) for the nacelles, I don't see how the drooping will be avoided forever. Haven't heard HOW they solved that problem with the original model at NASM, BTW... I think it's a natural consequence of gravity, the unconventional design of the ship, and what I consider the weakest area for attaching the nacelles -- the rear by the shuttlebay where it's a weaker structural point. I haven't heard these issues with the Refit version of the Enterprise. I wonder if it happens with the other designs and other versions of the Enterprise? I'd be surprised if it doesn't become an issue with the "JJ-Prise" (at least the first two versions) since it mirrors the attachment point of the TOS model.

Boyd/Mr. Trekworks, For the phaser effects, couldn't you have used (IF the customer requested it) green lasers for the effect? The phasers always seemed to come up higher from the dome. This was one of the things that was done better on the Refit -- there were clear points for the weapon effects to originate from. Of course, the art directions on ST:TMP owe Franz Joseph the credit for developing the ball turrets to begin with (even if he was totally off on the location of the torpedo tubes)! Seriously, the ball turrents are in the blueprints that he drew... They were released years before ST:TMP... Way, way before the Phase II or Refit TMP Enterprise were designed. Weren't you one of the guys that used RED lasers for the phasers. for the Refit version? I thought those came out well! I thought the lighting effect for the dome -- well, meh. Sorry... had to be honest but as soft as possible. Nobody likes harsh criticism! The paint job looks very nice. I gotta admit I never cared much for that "rustband" on the top of the saucer that everybody likes to put in. It gets overdone a lot and I personally think it's distracting anyway. Oh well, I guess it was put in to show that the Ship had been through quite a bit during its service life prior to ST:TMP.

I've never used lasers on my models. I don't use them because they are a safety hazard and they also have a very limited lifespan. When they burn out you'll have to open the model up to replace them. Unless you have some haze in the room you can't see them operating either.
@AvengerII
@AvengerII 8 жыл бұрын
Sorry! I must have confused you with the other builder in Florida. Your work is still great. I can see what you mean about the lasers... I was always kind of hesitant to use ANY kind of laser to play with my last pet.

Silly me -- but looking at the scale of the SHUTTLE CRAFT ... of the ENTERPRISE here ... and then, calculating the relative size of a human being standing next to it ... ... I dunno, it strikes me as a tad too large. THAT SAID -- well built and mucho cool on keeping the idea, the promise and the prayer that is Star Trek alive through your most excellent model building. Now, I know it's not the same version -- but -- I've seen the NCC-1701 in person at the old ILM (San Rafael) during STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN filming days and your models are right up there's ... so ... in a word, 'Bitchin'-!'
