Great work Matt. I'm always amazed at your technic

I tend to have nightmares with thicker decals on Lacquer paints - I get misbehaving from Trumpeter, Tamiya & Eduard (pre-2020), I've found using going old school using a Tamiya clear coat (x-22) with a self levelling thinners to begin with they behave.

Nothing better than the Eduard decals where the carrier film can be removed once the decal is down.

I just recently built the 1/48 eduard P-51D VLR, and those new decales are unbelievable. I would prefer the carrier film be thicker since i had issues with the film tearing into small pieces because they were so thin.

HGW do a stencil set for the F-4B/N....

Matt...where do you purchase your MRP paints? I would like to try after seeing you and some other modelers that I respect use them, especially since they do not need to be thinned. It's difficult finding them. Thanks in advance. Excellent detail work by the way.

As Ivan Womack already stated; HGW has (wet transfers) data sheet with the benefit of placing multiple stencils in one go. Micro Scale had? set 48-67 with data in white, black and grey

You are not planing to paint the insignias? It is great to see your work 4K!. Happy 2022!!

I'm considering it. Folded wings makes it a bit dicey on the port side. I'm also not super confident in color matching the VMFA-323 brown and yellow.

If you decide to use Eduard stencils, test several on different surfaces. My experience from the F-6D kit was portions of the printing pulled up when removing the carrier film. Completely unpredictable.

Thanks for the insight Matt. Have you ever tried adding some clear, then lightly wet sanding to help ‘even out’ that thick decal issue?
@DoogsModels2 жыл бұрын
Yes. I hate it but will if there's no other option (like the chief's head on the P-40F). No way I'm doing it across all the F-4's millions of stencils.

This is really useful. I was wondering how would you compare the Tamiya decals and if they are completely unusable if you are good with the kit marking options. Starting the kit soon and was planning to do the VF-111 one and was wondering if I can just use the kit decals or bite the bullet and spend for the eduard one for exact same plane. According to Tamiya this plane has no stencils after repaint, so while a full stencil phantom is really impressive I would go away with thicker stencils and save a lot of time applying.

I’ve got the academy vf 111 f4b and it’s decals are magnificent but usually aftermarket decals are the best option

The 4k is awesome Matt.....have your file sizes and rendering quadrupled? Even so , worth it
@DoogsModels2 жыл бұрын
File sizes have somehow stayed the same on the card. I still have about 2:40 of recording time on a 128gb card. But the output file was about 4.6GB. But that's highly encoder dependent. First render I used ProRes 16-bit and got a 98gb file out of it!

Try using enamel thinner on one of the normal decals you can lift the clear film off 😉
@DoogsModels2 жыл бұрын
I've tried that before (also been told it'll dissolve the Eduard film) and all it's ever done for me is jack and shit.

I've had these issues with "thicker" decals. What I've done in the past is to load up some clear gloss and then dial the airbrush down to a fine line. The goal is to get rid of the step between the paint surface and the edge of the decal film. Just build up the gloss along that edge and feather it into the surrounding surface. The step will smooth out and disappear. Do you want to have to do this on a hundred tiny stencils? 🤔🤪🤪🤪 Fuck no.🤕
