I’m still amazed how Monogram made excellent kits at that time. It feels they were years ahead of the competition. Packed with details and hardly any flash if any 👌🏼

Nice that you point out how well detailed these Monogram kits were! In the late 60’s & early 70’s (when I started modeling) these kits were ‘state of the art’; and they had the best crew figures! Love their Voodoo…

I always liked their pilot and crew figures. I hear model companies today whine it is too difficult to sculpt pilot figures... Monogram was doing it 50 years ago. They usually came with at least one separate arm so they could actually have their hands on the controls, not just sitting with their hands on their laps.

I grew up working in a hardware store and we had a great hobby shop (the owners hobby was the hobby shop lol). A lot of newer builders don’t realize we didn’t have all the brands we do now. aircraft kits in the 80’s it was Revell and Monogram, Airfix then you had Tamiya, Hasagawa and Fujiyama and that was pretty much it. And the Japanese kits in comparison were for the rich guys lol. Monogram’s line up was solid kits that built up nice into reasonable accurate models and I think they stand the test of time. And remember raised panels were by default, engraved kits were rare and very very pricey as that was cutting edge where now we take it for granted!

I completely agree. There are fewer and fewer mom and pop shops around now, which is a bit sad. Now I sound like and old man. 😆

I built the Monogram 48th scale F-102 a few years back, thought it was a brilliant kit, especially the weapons and undercarriage bay details. The only things I did to that model was to add a resin seat and rescribed the kit. I enjoyed building that kit so much that I soon picked up another one from a well known auction site to do it all again.

I remember getting this kit, the F-14 and Voodoo when monogram released them. Back in the day, kit unseen, no internet then for reviews and preordered from Mr Gamesway Ark here in Toronto. Should also mention the F-105G Wild weasel that came out around the same time

Those markings are from the 87th FIS that was at KI Sawyer AFB in the upper peninsula of Michigan. I built the Hasegawa kit in the 1970’s. I’m going to give this one a try. Quite a few on eBay. Thanks for the kit review. Nice job.

At my level of experience if I sanded the side down then took a super thin piece of plastic and blended it to the side and tried to even it out it would end up looking like the pilot had a inflight collision with a pterosaur. 😂🫤

I hear you, built the same release around the same time. I think I must've gone through half a tube of Squadron's execrable green putty and a sheaf of sandpaper on that one, giving me a lifelong aversion to putty in all its forms, so now I've learned to shape and fit the parts a lot better so that they just need a dap of super glue. Have one in the stash but need another so I can do a "what if" namely what if the Canadians had bought the F-106 instead of the 101, think she'd look pretty cool in the "hawk" livery for sure!

I'm currently building the Monogram 1/48 F-102 Delta Dagger and it's very similar to this kit. I have to say that I've been pleasantly surprised. The detail and fit is much better than I was expecting and I'm enjoying the build. I've had some minor issues, but what model doesn't?
@fuzzysghostmodels9840
@fuzzysghostmodels9840 Ай бұрын
Good stuff. These kits get overlooked because of their age and the panel lines. You're correct about every model has some issues. That makes it interesting and makes us better modellers. Good luck.
@psychodermix
@psychodermix Ай бұрын
You mentioned raised panel lines in your introduction. How do you deal with them? Do you paint them black and then gently sand them to highlight them or just leave them as is. I love both the Dart and the Dagger and have the new Meng kits in 1/72 to build.
@fuzzysghostmodels9840
@fuzzysghostmodels9840 Ай бұрын
Yes, that is a good way to highlight the panel lines. It takes a very light touch as it is easy to go too far. I haven't seen the MENG 102 kits, but I hear the detail is very good.

Exactly! Monogram models were great. ALWAYS had pilot figures and enoughdetail for me. I wish the legal issues would get straitened out so some company could buy the molds. I miss all the big Monogram 1/48 kits from rhe 70's and 80's and wish they'd be re-issued. I need a new 1/48 B-1B. The B-58 in 1/48 was a real show stopper....

Before I get into the video proper I want to say that this is my first time 🕰️ watching 👀 your videos, and so far so good, I particularly like your bookshelves, nice to see real books 📚 instead of a “stash” and I love the picture of the Fairey Gannet, one of my favourite aircraft, to some people it is just an ugly duck 🦆 that would never have grown up to be a beautiful swan 🦢, but I see it as a gorgeous example of what the Aviation Industry has, is and will produce. Ok, into the video. I n my opinion this kit is a fantastic piece of production given the era it was made, technology has changed a lot and some people get up my nose for decrying the raised panel lines, it was the way that they were made back then and the simple solution for the people who get their knickers in a knot 🪢 about them is to either not buy a kit that has them or they should just shut up about them. The other thing that I hate people moaning about is flash and ejector pin marks, flash is 99.9% of the time easy to remove, time consuming but still easy, ditto ejector pin marks, sometimes they have to be filled and sanded etc but if your not going to see them when you assemble the kit then why do it, personally it is all just part of the hobby and actually does not bother me, it is all part of the enjoyment and process of making the end product look 👀 the best that I can make it. Excellent review and great production of the video, thanks very much, just going to hit the subscribe button and thumbs up 👍. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇨🇦🇺🇸🇺🇦🇮🇱

Thanks very much! I agree with you completely, even on the Gannet. It's so ugly, it's beautiful. I have one of the new Airfix kits waiting to be built. I do love these older Monogram kits as they push the 'memory buttons' big time. There is more to come on that front. Thanks for your support.

@@fuzzysghostmodels9840 Likewise, I have the new Gannet in my stash as well, I am not sure if I will get round to building it though, I have so many kits in my stash that I don’t know where to start, I have just started on a Revell 1/48 scale Phantom FGR2 which is a challenge in itself for me, I have arthritis in my hands so it is hard to handle small pieces, but I will prevail, the other problem I have is that I also have a liking for Dragons 🐉 and other mythical creatures that are starting to take over my storage space, I just can’t stop buying them and asking for them as presents for Christmas/birthday, and they are not as easy as people might think to create a finish that doesn’t look 👀 completely out of the bounds of possibility, but, again I will prevail. Thanks very much for your videos, I will definitely be a regular viewer and leave you some feedback, I think 💭 that the effort fellow modellers put into bringing us valuable insights and knowledge to our hobby deserve at least a thumbs up 👍 and a message of support, thanks again 😀👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇨🇦🇺🇸🇺🇦🇮🇱🐉.

@@allandavis8201 is the Revell Phantom you are working on the reboxing of the Hasgawa kit? If it is, the seem line down the spine can be a bit pesky to clean up, but not impossible. I'm sorry to hear that your arthritis is interfering with your building. It's something that many of us have to deal with as we get older. Also , like many of us, you have a stash that is wY too big to finish. It's another common affliction with this hobby, but one I'm willing to live with! Lol. Keep plugging along and thanks for you support.
@allandavis8201
@allandavis8201 Ай бұрын
@@fuzzysghostmodels9840 , Yes it is the reboxed version, I have just dry fitted the fuselage halves and I have got a very nice seam line, not perfect and it looks like I will need some filler towards the aft end, however I didn’t have the cockpit tub in at the time 🕰️ or anything else so when I come to do the full assembly I will bare your words about it in mind and not get upset if it needs more than just a little bit of filler. My stash is not just about buying kits that I intend to build, I buy kits because I am an engineer and I enjoy just looking at them and analysing the process of design and production, at least that’s what I keep telling myself, lol 😂, and my family, if I owned up to the fact I buy them because I just want them I don’t think that they would be very happy or understand why I buy them. As for the arthritis I will carry on buying and building until I am no longer able to do it, but that won’t stop me buying kits or watching 👀 KZbin videos to make me feel like I am still part of the hobby community, I might even think about doing tutorial classes for beginners, not online but in person. Thanks very much for your reply and advice, I will keep going forward and keep watching your videos, extremely helpful and informative, thanks again. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇨🇦🇦🇺🇺🇸🇺🇦🇮🇱
