We recover data from a Samsung 870EVO sata SSD with almost 1.5 million bad sectors that failed to work in a computer. Then we do some low level reseach of the SSD to draw some voltage test points and schematics for future data recovery use. We also show you how to open the Samsung 870EVO SSD.

Thanks. Electronics do fail and its important for us to know how they work and where to find spare parts.

I had one of those drives, 2TB version It started losing data after 5TB written and 2y of use They are known defective and have a very high failure rate compared to the 860 EVO

I have a 4TB of this drive but so far its not reporting any bad sectors. I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed. Luckily I use it just as a storage drive.

I have 870 EVO 500GB bought on 2021 so i checked it after watching this video and ECC raw data are at 41, whatever it means. It's marked as critical but so far i have no problem yet and i only use it for game install anyway. Will try to claim for replacement before the warranty ends.

I wonder if those pins clean up using a white silicon eraser. ( it's an old trick from years ago I used to use on ram) I still use it on micro SD cards.

Can you tell me if it is possible to recover the data from a defect Samsung 870 EVO 4 TB SATA 2,5" with bad sectors in the memory chip/Firmware damage without using ACE-Lab? I sent it to a recovery expert who told me that this SSD is not supported by ACE-Lab and can therefore (according to his knowledge) not be recovered. …so now I am trying to find out if there is really no way apart from ACE-Lab to recovery before I must say goodbye to 2 TB of private data. : (
@ZeroalphaAu
@ZeroalphaAu 2 ай бұрын
Does it detect with full ID? model, serial and capacity? and does it have any access to the data area or is it bricked off? The data recovery industry is very small and not a lot of research happens outside of ace-lab who are my friends :) You need to find someone who really checks all the details first and knows for sure that the firmware is bricked. Our team is getting good at low level reverse engineering but its also hard business to dedicate a small team of engineers working on 1 SSD for weeks or months. So sometimes the easy cost effective answer is unless there is a simple ready made solution like what ace offers then its hard to justify the costs.

I've read that those made before November 2022 are bad ones. Those that were made after actually would have somewhat different hardware, and manufactured differently, and shipped with an even newer firmware that cannot be used on a pre Nov 2022 EVO 870. It sounds to me that the early 870 EVOs not only had a bad firmware but also a bad/defect hardware in many cases. Can anyone confirm this? So far I haven't found any report or video with a faulty 870 EVO that were made after Nov 2022. But that's the creepy thing here. These errors they have doesn't appear immediatly, it takes some time, some few years even until they start having bad sectors. I'm hesitant to buy a 870 EVO, even if it's a recent manufactured one.

I just realized my 870 EVO is faulty. Diagnostic software says it has 100% bad sectors. It was manufactured on 25 November 2023 (this is what a label on my SSD says). I bought it like a week ago....

@@PaniczAdam100 or 100% bad sectors? What software do you use, Samsung Magician? Any other errors, like CRC errors? If it is CrystalDiskInfo those numbers could be the "score" number kind of. What you need to read is the number to the right in RAW format. If that field is 000000000 kind of for bad sectors then it's 0 bad sectors.

@@AB-gm4yi Actually both - Samsung Magician and Aomei. I already shipped the SSD back (warranty claim).

@@PaniczAdamOk but you're sure you watched the right field? In CrystalDiskInfo for example the "current" and "threshold" are score number, but the actual info is in the raw field that I mentioned. Did you do a health scan with Samsung magician before you sent it away?
@PaniczAdam
@PaniczAdam 5 ай бұрын
@@AB-gm4yi yep. Samsung Magician says "Diagnostic Scan has stopped due to unknown reason" (full scan selected). When using S.M.A.R.T. self test the error is different - S.M. says: "Unknown!" I have 2 different EVO 870 SSDs and they work perfectly and S.M. is able to test them without any errors.

i have an 10 years old OCZ SSD, 0 bad sectors, work perfectly. In the last 5 years 2 Samsung EVO SSD dropped dead. No OS recognize them.
@lordofdrones
@lordofdrones 6 ай бұрын
The OCZ is probably SLC or MLC, the Evos are (3D) TLC or QLC. I've got a few drives about the same age, and they're flawless. A huge problem with SSDs in general is they just die without any warning.

I'm just an idiot who has never traced board traces before.....but I got to question your methodology here. Why troubleshoot the power supply and lines? According to your screenshot, almost 2 billion sectors were read successfully and (rounding up) 1.5 million were not. That's a relatively high success rate. That's still a concerning kind of failure, but I digress. That means you were able to read well over 99% of the drive (presumably) without issues. Why troubleshoot the power when you successfully got 99% of the data? Was the data nonsense/corrupted (assume no encryption)?

2021 I think that was during when the drive firmware would go crazy and kill a bunch or the entire drive I think the effected ones are built 2021-2022 and where past that it has newer better firmware where that should happen anymore why they released it without testing the firmware idk they should work on their quality control I thought Samsung was supposed to be good and high quality guess not

They even changed the manufacture process from Nov 2022, and included in them a newer firmware which couldn't be applied to those made before Nov 2022. To me it sounds also like a defect hardware in the earlier batch.

Samsung have gone down the tubes. The 860PRO was the last decent SSD they made ( mine are still going strong ) but the 870EVO is an electronic disaster. I've had them fail in the data center, and fail in the office. And samsung refuse to honour any warranty and fail to explain what their firmware updates address. Samsung has become a mickey-mouse no-name chinese electronics manufacturer.

Cheap labor, lots of board fabs over there now. Samsung is South Korean, so I suppose it makes sense for them to contract with some Chinese chip/board fab.
