1.5m pedestrian mobile whip in action on HF

Trying an old 1.5m pedestrian mobile whip / coupler on HF. 40m for SSB contacts, higher bands for FT8. Antenna described on my website vk3ye.com

I think - under power line can increase sensitivity ( capacitive coupling between wires and whip antenna ).

It looks like he was holding the antenna, camera, and the mic so I’d imagine it would have been too difficult to work a key. That’s only an observation though on my part.

@@justincompton4593He stopped for the FT8 ….? I think?? Mate of mine does mobile CW from the car but not filming …so yes probably would be a circus trick. 😂😂

Left the key at home. In theory CW's efficiency should help but in practice the small number of operators within a single hop offsets this. If there were 100 more CW operators in VK6, VK8 & ZL on each band from 18 to 28 MHz and they weren't being called by DX then CW would be more viable. But I have done CW pedestrian mobile and it can work if conditions are good.

how to do check your VSWR on FT-817 ? and do you tune by ear, MAX noise on choice frequency ? TNX buy one of your book last mount . Good job !!!

Thanks. The FT-817 has a relative SWR indicator which works well. You tune by ear first to get you in the region first.

Which of your more recent pedestrian mobile antennas would you say works best? I would guess your 5m squid pole and wire. But theres something appealing about a classic telescopic whip, even if it is 1.5m long. Also 20m might have been reasonable, guessing it was too early in the day for that band.

Definitely the Wadetenna (5m pole & wire with loading coil). Followed by my large pedestrian mobile magnetic loop. Then the SummerLoop (for 28 MHz).

Peter, I saw you’re using a type 6 powdered iron core. I’m building an L matcher to work from 80 to 10 meters along the lines of the MFJ 16020 L matcher and wondered if a type 6 or type 2 is best. I lean more toward type 6 because in spite of having to wind more turns around the core it has a higher Q factor. What are your thoughts?

Type 6 is generally recommended for above 10 MHz, which is the primary focus for this antenna. So that's what I used.
