Which makes it all the more frustrating that they couldn't see him as a starter over Grbac. At best Elvis could pad stats in garbage time. Gannon went on to be an MVP and lead the Raiders to the super bowl.
@christophersantiago1713 жыл бұрын
It was definitely a big mistake by Marty Shottenheimer especially in 97 I think Gannon went 6-1 when Grbac was hurt and for some reason Marty though since Grbac didn't lose the starting role he made the decision to start Grbac instead of Gannon in the Divisional Game against Denver which it was crazy cause Gannon Beat the Broncos 24-21 while Grabac lost 19-3 and Denver defense had problems stopping a slippery scrambler in Gannon but had a field day against a pocket passer Grbac

The irony of Gannon pulling the Raiders out of the wilderness, in no small part by being clutch and pulling a comeback off IN KANSAS CITY to knock them out of the playoffs and send THEM in to mediocrity, is not lost on me. I defend Rich Gannon to this day as a Raiders fan. I have had ONE great run in 37 years as a fan and he was the major reason for it.

I'm surprised that the Chiefs didn't let Louie Aguiar try and Kick a Field Goal after Lin Elliott missed twice. I would have, anyway. That's always killed Marty Schottenheimer's Good Teams. Bad Play calling in the Postseason & Bad Special Teams. The 86 & 89 Cleveland Browns, 95 & 97 Chiefs, & 04 & 06 Chargers. All were Teams that he put together that should have Won Super Bowels.

All I have to say is that started a bad horrible playoffs storm drought for my Chiefs for about 25 years of always losing the playoffs but they ended that losing streak last season in the playoffs against the Colts and I celebrated a Chiefs Victory over the Colts last January lol. They almost beat New England after. Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes will get to that SB and win it in the future someday it might take a couple or few years. Most NFL kickers couldn't make field goals in these conditions back then. Most of them had maximum 50-52 yard range indoors, and outdoors in good conditions 45-50 yards was their max. Outdoors in zero-degree weather generally knocked 5-10 yards off their range, putting even 40-yard attempts in peril. I remember watching games in frigid conditions where teams would punt from the opposing team's 30-yard line on fourth down. Kickers nowadays can make them from anywhere in any conditions.

@@justinyoung8062 Not sure about "should have" in '88. Niners had bad luck on turnovers and missed FG, and Cincy's only TD was on a kick return. SF dominated in yardage gained, just couldn't punch it in until the 4th quarter. The next season proved that the roster was still dominant, they just underperformed in the regular season. In '90, yeah, that game was statistically even and Buffalo had the better team. Just missed the last kick that would have won it.
