It's nice that the gave options on the models. I wonder why they removed the side skirts in the later model? Why give up the extra protection? Weight considerations? IIRC, the Canadians also had a few Valentines.

Those were also referred to as sand shields. I think in muddy Europe terrain they could clog and be a hinderance.
