Thanks for the informative video, i live in homestead , the soil is rich and everything grows super fast here. Ants and mango trees go hand in hand, but they don't eat the fruit unless the fruit falls to the ground and burst open.

My name is John (Rockport TX) (zone 9). I'm hooked, on growing food, this year alone I planted around 12 trees, for food & that's not counting the other things I've got going like guavas, papaya, strawberries, Okinawa Spinach, etc. I have 10 acres to expanded on that I have not built rentals on, & I need my trees & such to help offset the stress from dealing with rentals. Maybe some day I be a Laughing Buddha, but until then (maybe even after) I have nature. Thanks for the videos, You've helped.

Great job, I do like your videos. I've been into, building up my land with fruit trees & etc for about 5 years, really more but have in truth really got into it when my tangerine tree started giving around 400 of fruit, (now it's spring again & it must have 10,000 flowers on it), & it looks like it will be giving me the biggest crop yet, it's the 4th year of fruit production. I've planted about 30 trees & other things, in the last few years. Just ran about 500' of water pipes in the last 2 weeks, to help me be faithful in watering the Pawpaw, & Pecans, Feojas, Pomegranate, Strawberry guavas, Avocato, Olive, citrus trees ... thanks again.

hey John I looovvve your videos, I live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I have a small city garden in the front and the back of my house. I don't grow vegetables, I used to grow zucchinis in pots, also beans.

For those of you thinking about growing a container mango tree in up north, you can do it, just put your tree in the greenhouse in the winter and away from freezing temps. Good container mango varieties ( aka Condo Mango ) are the "Pickering", "Ice cream" and "Nam Doc Mai #4" there are other too. but those three are really good. John, you should have purchased that "Coconut Cream", and the "Lemon Zest" two new varieties that are the rave for Fla mango aficionados .

I'm an upbeat person by nature, and want to inspire and get people EXCITED about gardening. I'm sure there are other gardening channels on KZbin you can watch with hosts that are not as exciting or upbeat as myself, and encourage you to watch them if you don't like my upbeat attitude or information.

Beautiful! Loved the idea of using the dead tree as a stabilizer. On my 1 acre the drought here in Texas took at least a dozen tree's. We were waiting till spring to see how many we need to take down. Hubby is gonna think I'm nuts telling him to leave me 6' stumps, HAHA!! John, little quick off topic question. You installed the earthmister. I've been patiently waiting for the video. Simple yes or no.... should I invest? I'm planning 8 4x24 beds now, still up in the air on irrigation.

I love your videos brother. One suggestion is to get a microphone that attach to your shirt. The cam video recorder mic sound very screechy because you have to yell to be able to record your voice. I have to fast forward a lot because of it. Just a suggestion from a fan.

@DanielManahan grass feeds from the top of the soil, Fruit trees are deep rooted, so not much competition for nutrients. because of Floridas well drained sandy soil, nutrients would leach down quickly anyway.

@faithslanding I hate to say this but I would check your local zoning and HOA if you have one. You should be fine growing those trees. We have apples, pear and cherries here in NY and we're a zone 3. Hopefully, they will fruit this year. It takes a few years for them to fruit depending on the type and age of the tree you buy. Superthrive is a great product to use, it made my lemon tree grow at least 18" in one season. Good Luck!

John I live in Austin Texas area. I just bought mangoes, caimito, guabana, santol and guava tree. I wanna grow them indoors in a pot do you think they would bear fruit? I am also thinking to have a Greenhouse but not heated since, I only wanna protect them from extreme heat and freezing which doesn't happen often here in Texas. Do you think that would be possible?

A space heater would generate more than enough heat at night to maintain a decent level of warmth to allow citrus trees to maintain a growth state in a greenhouse. It's very likely the sun will heat the greenhouse to a point that will carry it though the night. As for the fruiting, I don't know which trees need to be constantly pollinated in order to bear fruit, if you are controlling the climate, and doing the pollination, I don't see why it should not bear. I guess the question is: "how big is the pot?" .

@martenfisher1 The problem with this, is that you do not know what variety your getting, there are many delicious cultivars "Delight" "purple haze" etc. many people grow Pitaya, you can look on craigslist to see if people have cuttings of known good varieties that are sweet and tasty. they are easy to grow from cuttings, basically just cut off a piece and stick it in the ground. I have 3 varieties growing like weeds in my back yard.

Just a thousand? That seems really, really low. We garden about a half acre in Michigan and get about 4,000 to 6,000 lbs, depending on what we grow.

@martenfisher1 I get where your coming from, these things will grow even from seed, here in the tropics I have one grew up a fence, and is like 20ft long, this from a unknown variety that was pretty tasty. hybrids generally are sweeter though ( pink inside ). anyway, online cuttings are available cheap, all my cuttings i got for free, just from people that had them, "Vietnamese Jaina" Makisupa " and the unknown one. Anyone in the D.R. that wants a cutting, just write :)
