This is a rather long video where I disclose my honest opinion on Netflix's new docu-series entitled The King of Collectibles. But first, how did we get here? Why is HYPE so prominent in the antiques and collectibles trade and how can you avoid it? If you want to be a successful investor, you MUST LEARN TO AVOID THE HYPE!

My journey: 1. Invest in equities Index etf 2. Build up my 401k 3. 2 yrs worth of emergency funds in money market funds 4. One entire storage of vintage 80s90s actionfigures sealed and graded 5. Prototypes and production pcs of vintage toys Im done. And what im doing now is really just keep dumping money into index. Im done collecting everything i need. And now im selling my toys at its height! And what happens after that, the money i get, is going back to index funds again. 🎉

You’re awesome Shawn. Another very entertaining video. I wish more people were reasonable about collectables like you. It’s always fun to watch your videos cause it makes me feel like I’m not crazy. When I see all the hype based information out there. You’re videos are so refreshing.

I agree with you, everything is hype. Particularly in a market based economy, hype is the only thing that differentiates competition. Dealers in secondary market items, like antiques and collectables, have an obvious interest in promoting the long term investment of an item, when they themselves are speculators not investors. This can absolutely come off as insincere to me, because they are themselves not interested at all in the long term, just in convincing others of it.

Binged the entire series in one sitting and while I'd say it was entertaining, it was most definitely hype driven. At the end of the day it's a show meant for entertainment. Many scenes felt scripted to me, but to what extent I'm not sure. They definitely made it seem like it was a glamorous and exciting lifestyle with the celebrities and rich collectors, and pretty much only showed their "wins". It felt like every item and/or consignment they were getting was an amazing find. I wonder whether some of the deals he made were strictly pushed and only made possible due to the show (for marketing of course). The best part of the show was just seeing some of the rare items collectors have and how varied the collectibles and antiques market really is. But I definitely had some major gripes: * It felt strange and possibly a potential conflict of interest when the president (Ken) can just make bids on behalf of any customer. Looks like there's very little regulation when he can have ultimate control over the bids, see who is bidding what in real-time, and have an influence over that. * One of the consigners always kept on saying the line "the market is hot right now for xxx collectible". Now I don't know when this show was filmed but it rubbed me the wrong way to say that over and over for pretty much anything he came across. Sounded more like a sales-pitch line than an actual truth. * Started to cringe once they mentioned Rally and fractional ownership. Would have much preferred this to be a documentary style show rather than a reality-TV show.

The thing that stood out the most to me about this show was that you could basically see the spots where it would have been SUPER tempting and advantageous to shill bid up items. You couldn't ever proved it happened, since the company itself exclusively has the bidder's information, many of whom choose to be anonymous. The entire culture of the company was that faux Wolf of Wall Street mindset so nobody's gonna snitch.

Great video as always, Shawn. I’m watching the show. Enjoying seeing the cool memorabilia but not stuff I’m personally interested in owning. I enjoy seeing what other people like to collect. Fascinating. Television was born out of consumerism and will always be a platform to try to convince us to part with our money. Just need to keep our wits about us.

I try to put up real MTG info/ideas. It’s kind of anti-hype… a lot of channels spit out rumors and hype stuff and get tons of views… It is off balance, and I respect you for that. I know how hard it is to be the voice of reason and the anti-hype. So, keep it up Shawn! Us anti-hype channels are few and far between…

Shows are for entertainment, it's up to the consumers to do their due diligence whenever they open up their wallet. With that said, items such as the Dream Team Jerseys are what I consider blue chips in the Sports collectibles market. The history and significance is all there. Nostalgia and prospecting plays a huge role in alternative assets but some items you can't purchase even if you wanted to.

Shawn, when will do an episode on books? I'd like to hear your take on publishers like Easton Press and Franklin. I know they are created scarcity and are never true 1st Editions, but in collecting signed editions of true classics and (often dead) masters like Asimov, Vonnegut, Bradbury, Ellison and Angelou it seems as a verifiable way to begin in collecting that can morph into investment over time, or is the market relatively stagnant when it comes to values increasing? Thanks

When i still watched TV eons ago id sometimes watch a non-american antiques evaluation show. The most interesting cases would be some mom or pop bringing some old painting or plate they found in the attic. The evaluators would usually give a short history lesson on the item and then value it - usually the stuff was worth like up to 2k euros and very rarely theyd have something around 10k or even 20k and that would be an absolute stand out rarity :p

Antiques Roadshow has been going since the 1970s. Antiques Roadshow (US) has been going since the 1990s. Being English myself, I prefer the one I grew up with. I find it more professional and polished. The US one is very good too. I watched the King of Collectibles, and found it slimey and garish. Ken comes across as a used-car salesman, and not someone I think I could trust to mind my dog. The series itself was okay... but the man has been on the scene for five minutes... if I was selling something of value, I'd be using the services of Christies or Sotheby's - both of whom pre-date the USA, have experts in their field, and have connections with all the major players... not with Jake Paul, Jay-Z, and Payton Manning! 😂

In the "do it yourself" investment community "mutual funds" are kind of toxic because the fees are higher when compared to etfs (however the money manager will love you for buying their mutual fund). A low cost etf based off the s&p500 index is the way to go. I cringe every time you say "mutual funds". I agree with everything else you say though :)

Most of the shows events took place in spring/summer 2022. If you compare the prices cited on the show to prices today, most of the items shown have lost 30%-70% of their value. I sincerely believe that 95% of sports cards hit their all time highs during the pandemic. Most of the modern, hype cards will continue to fall in value regardless of player performance.
