As a drummer of many years, whenever I play this beat, which is often, in my head I always called this 'the Billie Jean beat'. Timeless. Simple. Effective! I once heard a story about someone asking Stewart Copeland at a work shop to play the most difficult thing he could play. Apparently, he played a beat like this for two mins and then told them 'I played the same thing for two minutes, with the same dynamics all the way through, without speeding up or slowing down. That's the hardest thing to do.'

Wow. Really in the pocket! What I love is that each rim shot he does on the snare sounds exactly the same and always consistent. It shows you that just a simple groove like this takes a lot of work to sound clean and making sure every part is locked in physically and dynamically.
