when I wore glasses, placing the loupe against my lenses was the perfect distance from my eye, plus it gave me something to rest the loupe on. Now, after eye surgery, I get headaches 😀

You can also test magnetism by waving the rock in front of a compass.

Wouldn't it damage the compass? I remember people saying about putting magnets near compasses might mess the compass up.

If a mineral is highly magnetic, yes you could waive it in front of a compass. You’re not going to hurt the internals of a compass if you’re doing this quickly. If you leave a magnetic rock or a magnet near a compass for a long period of time you can end up, hurting the compass.
