Great video. I have three solar blankets of different sizes. ranging from 24 to 52w. Whatever the circumstances I have something I can take with me that will provide power. I personally think its good to have one small enough to be convenient for backpacking, and one that is car portable and more powerful. Throw in a small battery pack and a USB torch and basically you will be the last person with lights on.

Have been trying figure out how much solar would be needed to run a freezer and or refrigerator. Have you tried any of these products to do that and if so how big of solar panels and a solar generator would be needed.

@@rumdog117 I think there are ways to calculate it but I think you would need to go to a specialist solar site. All I know about fridges/freezers is that they have an average energy use, and a peak load. Basically because most of the time they are off, and when the cooling pump kicks in they draw heavily for a brief period. Probably more of an issue for generators, than solar. Good luck

@@rumdog117 go watch Hobo Tech vids. He explains a lot of that. There are diff sizes of refrigerators & freezers, hence diff power requirements. All appliances have a tag/sticker stating their power consumption. You need a SoGen that will easily output that wattage. Let's say you need 300 watts to run your fridge. A 300 watt SoGen is too small because max steady output is always a bit lower, like 260 or 280. So you go up to a bigger unit. Panels to charge your SoGen also has variables. Each unit has a max limit as to how much power it will accept. Send in too much & the unit will not charge. The wattage output of solar panels varies. So you need to get panels that max output will not exceed what your SoGen will accept. There some new SoGen units by Bluetti you may want to consider. Hobo Tech explains all their features, but they are power monsters. I like the AC200 series the best. But they also have a huge unit that you can connect to your house & power from roof panels. They can also be paired to give greater power storage. Go check out HoboTech channel, there is something to learn in every vid. I knew nothing before I started watching. It was like a virtual class for me.

I’ve seen basic solar panels that are only about $150USD, basic solar energy systems for homesteadings are first made out of one of these and a vehicle battery and they work quite well for most everything electronic so it should work for a truck, This solar blanket may be out of your price range but solar energy should be within your grasp.

Look up Will Prowse, he has an ~600 dollar diy solar generator and with the money you save from refusing to spend 1500 dollars on overpriced garbage, you can be safe in the knowledge that you have solar and storage that you can use on more than just your phone or laptop that will last longer than 4-6 months in the sun. And if all you want to do is charge a phone, 50 dollars on a 25-50 watt foldable and a rechargeable battery is more than enough.

Totally agree - one can buy the flex panals and not take up a great deal of space, not to mention save almost 90% and still get the same out come. People are starting to get away from the basics of survival leaning more towards glamping.

@@jvittur the problem is flexible cells have 7% efficiency. This uses rigid cells on a flexible frame edge meaning 21% efficiency. Still isn't worth the price and you can make your own replica of this product for cheaper.

@@readyok- Rich yuppies doing what they've always been doing ie wasting money and showing off. There is a cheaper way to do this but it is not as pretty nor as convenient however it will last much longer. This foldable stuff is only meant for occasional use for like camping and outdoor events however for daily use it will usually fall apart after about a year that is if it actually lasts. They tend to bread down in two ways where either the plastic goes bad or the internal connections fail from fatigue leading to loss of performance or the whole thing stops working.

Not the future of everyone who doesn't live in the sunbelt. Overcast > 5 months of the year here, and short days in winter also. In my world, solar is at best a weak, intermittent back up. Underground 500gal propane tank(s), smart multifuel off-grid generator and LiFePO4 battery bank supplemented by 1-2 portable battery "generators" seem like best options, but open to suggestions. Can't relocate for at least 2 years. Hard to justify this kind of install just to leave it behind even though it would likely pay for itself or close at time of sale...I guess I could also take "lessons learned" and apply to next home.

If you listened to what he said. He knows its not for everyone and he received them from the company for free. He is just pointing out the pros and cons of them and while mentioning it is best suited for those that have the disposable income for it. To go and say it must have be a hell of a sponsor and he should have left it alone because you won't by it is ridiculous. It's his channel and he has all the rights to review what he sees fit. I think if you don't like it and all the other naysayers can go start your own channels since you are all getting so easily offended. The main disadvantage of the flexi blankets are . just that. difficult to tilt for best capture . Even if you would stake one edge at ground level , and support opposite edge , you would still have to turn or chase the sun like rigid panels.attaching to side of vehicle is good for early and late day sun. Witch is weaker than mid day rays. I am not knocking you , just my thoughts. I enjoy your videos. Keep up the interesting topics.

I like this one. In Canadian winters, when I need power the most, my portable solar panels often can’t even be put outside. I sometimes put them inside the house against a big window sliding door facing the back where it’s sunniest and very private. But indoors they only charge a trickle. I’m wondering if one of the smaller solar blankets could be hung like a drape on the inside of the house facing a sunny window and still provide an ok charge to a generator. Either way, the price is kinda high for me, but I can certainly see the advantage in this product. Thanks for the information.

I noticed commenters talking about the price. I have 600 watts of off grid solar (6 panels @ $90 each Home depot) . It is not portable. Solar blankets are not something you would use to power your home unless you have plans to leave in the event of... whatever. I am not going to leave my home. I don't need portability. If you NEED electricity that is portable then you will have to shell out for it. If I had to leave I would take one 100 watt panel, one 100 amp/hour battery and the 1500 watt inverter. I would have to leave the rest behind.

Todays price 07-18-21 200 watts is $1500 with a %10 discount which is tax your paying $1500 for 200 watts. No way I could see justification for that ratio $7.50 / Watt

some thing also to be aware of with all solar panels and this is also some what dependent on where you are on the planet, for around the 2 months prior too and post winter solstice your panel generally loose around 40% of its total capacity on a clear day compared to the middle of summer :)

Geez. Seriously how many people can bemoan the the price?! Like with anything there are less expensive and more expensive options. Performance, durability, size, etc are numerous, and yes sometimes less expensive can do the job that more expensive does, and in some cases it won't. Everyone has a budget whatever that may be, and everyone will decide what works best for them, hopefully with whatever amount of research beforehand. Did any of the folks talking about the price notice there are links to other (less expensive) options in the info section? CP, thank you for another informational video! Good review but wished you could have dove deeper into longevity and durability of the PowerFilm and how Offgrid Trek have designed an option to Powerfilm. I read through some of the comments , as you are probably aware, the term 'costs per watt' is being used as a gold standard for selecting a portable panel is pretty useless, unless you are comparing two panels that have the exact same purpose, build quality, mission and criticality of having it work every time and under harsh conditions. Here are two examples of PowerFilm and Offgrid Trek and standard Chinese quality portables. My son heads up scout/recon/sniper teams overseas and are in the fields for extended times. The standard panels they use, if needed, is Powerfilm and for darn good reasons (many vids out there why they do what they do). Down side of course is you have to be able to afford one but also they are 2-3 times the sq ft for the same power generation in normal sunlight. But they are in a class of their own in durability and dependability for their intended mission. My daughter is a professional mountaineer and a professional mountaineer and extreme wilderness guide (I am talking up to 3 months at a time in Patagonia as an example). Her clients use a ton of video and cameras...you can not carry that many batteries for documenting and of course critical life support iNReach SOS and satellite phones for emergencies. Since weigh is critically important they typically use 20-30w foldable. Mostly 20-25w just for the weight. In the last couple of years she will typically have to go through 2-3 foldable 25w panels a season. $50 off Amazon. They have to carry multiple backups because the failure rate in these conditions mandate it. But they also fail for no good reason (actually there are good reasons why they do fail). She has chosen the 28.5w Offgrid Trek over the 30w Powerfilm for one simple reason, how much space is required to deploy (being on mountains or sea kayak it makes a difference). But my point is after almost two years and one Offgrid Trek panel it still works, dependable and has not lost any of its efficiency , which is a common problem with std. Chinese foldable (as much as 50% after a couple months of use if it can last that long). In conclusion : these are expensive for sure...I only own the cheap ones...my life doesn't depend on them. Lastly , comparing this 'cost per watt' is like making the point you will only buy a vehicle that gets the best gas mileage. It is not the gas mileage , its what is its intended purpose and will meet your operational goals and mission, especially if your life depends on them and/or to keep your clients very happy. PS: ordered another 28.5w Offgrid Trek, from Rene, for her today for additional needs.

At fist glance, these seem like a desirable item. The only concern I have is the durability of folding and unfolding wires over a period of time. If you bug out, and desire a small footprint these are excellent. I wonder if our dystopian future will prove an issue over time with constantly moving, setting up and breaking down. How easily are these repaired? I might add that if you have an interest in solar panels, you also learn to build them from scrap panel pieces as well.

This is great technology too bad it's over $2,000.... however you can get the same thing using a foldable 100-watt panel for only $250. but seriously to carry a solar panel in your bug out bag you really only need a 30 watt USB capable panel that's more than enough to recharge your devices.

that 200 watt blanket is $1,500. i bought a "dokio 300 watt folding panel kit" that i can confirm puts out 225 watts at peak power/peak sun. i dumped the included pwm controller and wired it in series for a mppt controller so i could toss it out in the sun, but keep the controller 70 feet away, inside where its warm and dry and that is where the batteries are. oh and the dokio kit i mentioned is only $340, but it seems to be going up right now

I recommend (from experience) rigid folding panels. How big depends on what you want to power, and search solar for beginners (if you need to) for what else you need to make it all work. 🙂

I have two 100w folding panels that will sit on the passengers seat of my vehicle that i use to keep my camper batteries and my recently purchased Jackery 1000 charged up. they were about 140 each and will produce about 110w each on a clear day

From what people have shared of their experiences be it here on YT as reviews on sites like Amazon these sort of panels like to break down with daily use between lose connections to the plastics degrading with age. I prefer rigid panels as they hold up over much longer periods of time plus the cost is sometimes better. If size and weight isn't an issue I would just mount a couple of panels on a truck or van for less money. For bug out bags there are small rigid panels that clip on though their performance isn't as advertised they at least hold up well enough.

For $1500 I would just get 2x Topsolar 120W Foldable Portable Solar Panel Charger Kits (240W) and spend the remaining $1100 on Solar Generators (such as an Ecoflow Delta).The Off Grid Trek 215W panel only gives an additional 1.6W/lb additional performance advantage at 15.8 W/lb compared to the Topsolar 14.2 W/lb

Thanks for the review and upload, @CityPrepping. I suspected that you knew what the focus of the comments were going to be, once curious souls clicked on the provided link. 😉 All the positives that you list make for a compelling argument to pull the trigger for purchase of the solar blanket. Assuming that the long term durability and reliability are as advertised, people with the immediate means to do so should seriously consider adding the product to their preps. As I have a couple of high dollar purchase items already in the queue, the solar products will be added to the list for acquisition later in the year. But make no mistake; I organically see the value of ownership, and I can wait to put the system in my preps.

Very helpful. I'm currently enclosing a structure for livestock, and intend to have cooling, lights, and a security camera, all powered by solar. This is definitely an interesting idea, and I'll have to add it to consideration.

If wired in series then if one fails then all are likely out of action. It is therefore likely that they are in some form of series/parallel configuration.

Does he think during this sales pitch we wouldn't notice he swapped out the panel for a lower cell count when comparing its size to the power film blanket? when demonstrating power output it was always a 15 cell then my magic its a 6 cell to make it look small in comparison to a competing blanket!

The smaller blanket he compared to the Powerfilm 120 was the most comparable solar blanket Off Grid Trek makes. The larger blanket is almost 2x the watts of the Powerfilm.

As another commenter pointed out, the OGT blanket he used for the comparison produces roughly the same amount of power as the PowerFilm it was compared to. OGT solar blankets are much more compact because they use monocrystalline panels that are cheaper, twice as efficient, less durable, heavier, and don't perform as well when partially shaded as the thin film solar panels in the PowerFilm blankets. If you need the lightest, most durable panel available then PowerFilm is for you. If you need the most compact solar panel available then the Off Grid Trek solar blankets are for you. If you don't need either of those things then get some traditional folding solar panels instead for less than half the price per watt and more than 3x the weight.

Great idea, but not for average consumer at this price point. I have a 120 W 4x panels folding case which has been doing the job while overlanding. Money not being an issue, definitively a solar blanket. So, until the price drop....

This looks great on a still sunny day, but the slightest breeze can require constant babysitting, and having a quick storm pop-up can easily cause damage. I learned my lesson, no thanks.

It depends on the wattage of your refrigerator. There should be a tag/sticker giving that.

Depends on the efficiency of the fridge. I use a Dometic electric compressor fridge for emergencies off grid use. Combined with a small 64wh LiFePO4 battery, it changes during the day, battery keeps it going over night and through the next day. I use a single 60 watt panel for this. This panel is probably even Overkill. again it all depends on the efficiency of the refrigerator.

Solar blankets are not "new technology" per se, but they're relatively new and still a niche product because they are difficult and costly to manufacture. They will continue to be a premium product for the foreseeable future, but if more people become interested in solar blankets then we might see prices drop by as much as half. Unfortunately that seems like a remote possibility at the present moment.

yeah, i dont trust the little voltage regulator they put on these sort of things, i normally rip them out and solder in mc4 terminated wires and run that to an actual mppt controller

I’ve been looking at these but I live on a very limited income so it’s taking me a while to get enough saved so that’s what concerns me. I really want to get this and the ecoflow delta and that’s why it’s taking me forever to save. If I knew the economy was crashing two weeks from now I would be wishing this could be transferable and connected to the Jackerys or I’d have the blanket already. I honestly just wish a company like this or any company really would base the price off of someone’s income. I’m so psyched to get the solar combo but I’m seriously concerned that I’m not going to purchase it in time of actually needing it 😩😵
