Pastor Skip asked the question I've always asked as a younger Christian reading through these names: "Why are these names here?" In my time of maturing since, hopefully what God allowed me to learn about those areas of His Word can help someone else (with those same questions) out: - The whole scripture is ALL ABOUT JESUS! One good exercise to try when reading and understanding scripture is (when coming to these tedious or hard-to-understand parts) to ask yourself, "What is God trying to tell me about Jesus (Who He is, His work, His roles, His character, His heart, His mission, etc.)?" Consider what Hebrews 10:7 (quoting Psalm 40:7) says: [Jesus saying] "In the volume of the book it is written of me." Also remember the "Bible study" to Emmaus (Luke 24:25: "And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself." - EVERYTHING HAS IMPORT! Consider what Paul mentions in Romans 15:4: "For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning." God has a purpose behind every word (and every letter and every space too?) that is written for us (Matthew 5:18: "For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot [an apostrophe-like letter] or one tittle [decorative hooks on some letters] will be no means pass from the law until all is fulfilled.") In our modern English, we might say, "not the dotting of an "i" or the crossing of a "t" will pass away." Of course, we can't forget Paul's words to Timothy (2 Timothy 3:16: "ALL SCRIPTURE is given by inspiration of God...") - Pastor Skip mentioned about Methuselah's name (from the roots "muth" (death) and "shalach" (to bring, to send forth), which has the prophetic meaning of "his death shall bring" (as the year Methuselah died was the year the Flood came). With Methuselah having the longest recorded lifetime in the Bible, Methuselah becomes a poignant picture of God's mercy; His inevitable judgment being withheld for so long out of His extravagant mercy on an utterly sinful and corrupt world. If this one name could already have meaning, what about the others (say) from Adam to Noah? - Adam ("man", Adam being the first man) -> Seth ("appointed", God appointed Seth to continue the Messianic line after Cain killed Abel) -> Enosh ("mortal", "frail", "miserable", from the root "anash" to be incurable, used of wound, grief, woe, sickness, or wickedness) -> Kenan ("sorrow", "dirge", "elegy") -> Mahalalel ("the Blessed God") -> Jared ("shall come down", from verb "yaradh") -> Enoch ("teaching", "commencement", the oldest prophecy in the Bible is by Enoch, is recorded in Jude, and is about the 2nd Coming of Jesus!) -> Methuselah ("his death shall bring") -> Lamech ("despairing", can be seen in roots of modern words like "lament") -> Noah ("comfort", "relief/rest", from "nacham"). - To put the names of those 10 in readable English to see what God wants us (even today) to learn: "Man (is) appointed mortal, sorrow. (But) The Blessed God shall come down teaching (that) His death shall bring (the) despairing comfort, or rest." God is so in control of all things that even in the lives of people way back in Genesis, how they were named by their parents, and the various workings of the individual and corporate human experience, etc., He hid THE GOSPEL MESSAGE in a genealogy in Genesis! [You'd be hard-pressed to argue that a bunch of Jewish writers "conspired" to hide the Christian Gospel within the Hebrew scriptures (Old Testament).] - The 10 names also illustrate the attributes of our Messiah: Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45) -> Seth (1 Thess. 5:9) -> Enosh (John 1:14) -> Kenan (Luke 22:44) -> Mahalalel (Romans 9:5) -> Jared (Philippians 2:8) -> Enoch (John 6:68-69) -> Methuselah (Romans 5:9-10) -> Lamech (Matthew 27:46, Psalm 22:1) -> Noah (Matthew 11:28, Mark 5:15). - Furthermore, (toward the end) the incident with the daughters of Zelophehad was mentioned, which dealt with the passage of the family inheritance in the event that a father did not have sons. Essentially, the daughters (if they married a man WITHIN THE SAME TRIBE) would be able to still carry the family's inheritance forward because their father would be able to "adopt" their husband(s) as his "son(s)-in/by-law". This obscure piece of Torah law was not included simply because Moses "just happened" to write it down, but because (through the inspiration of God, 2 Timothy 3:16) there was a reason to present it for us, even today! The kingship claims of Jesus Christ hang upon this legal exception codified in the Torah. As Pastor Skip presented, there was a blood curse on the line of kings (in Jeremiah). However, because Mary married Joseph (a man within the tribe of Judah also, just as she was), Joseph was "reckoned as by law" a son of Heli, which solidifies both Jesus's LEGAL RIGHT to rule (through the royal line to Joseph) and biological connection (but avoiding the blood curse on Jeconiah through the line of Mary) to the line of kings, which fulfilled one of hundreds of prophecies about the Messiah, Jesus. - Keep being diligent in digging! "It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter." Proverbs 25:2.
