When I was growing up, I was called selfish if I didn't help others, but all I got from people was abuse and bullying. When I was 18 I woke up to reality and became a misanthrope. I looked after number one because I realised that no one cared about me unless they wanted something from me. I didn't become evil, just indifferent .

All creatures are expected to exploit others for survival. One has to love itself first and then love others as much as it loves itself, but not more. That is the rule of Nature. Do things that make one happy. If helping others makes one happy, do it, not otherwise.
@NexusInsight-1317 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing your perspective! Nietzsche did stress self-empowerment and the importance of valuing oneself before helping others. It’s fascinating how you connect that to a natural principle-finding genuine happiness in our actions rather than forcing ourselves to do good.

Think about it this way, the fact you notice more evil than goodness is because the baseline is good. For a good deed to be noticed, it has to be exceptional. Evil deeds are noticed even when minor. Noticing blue dots on a blue wall is hard so it might seem red dots are prevalent.

It's easier to notice when good people are sad and evil people are satisfied because those cases contradict our (unfounded) expectation of karmic justice. The reality is that there's a lot of good people satisfied with life and many times, evil acts are rooted on deep emotional wounds. I think satisfaction and sadness have nothing to do with being good or evil. Having a purpose, belief system, or a firm moral code and acting in accordance to it is what's actually important. Good people that suffer are generally those who would like (or would've liked) to be a bit more selfish but can't, because of complacency, lack of assertiveness, etc. Same with evil people. As the most prominent example, Mother Theresa might have suffered a lot, but I wouldn't say she was sad. She had her beliefs and acted according to them.

There is a difference between being a good person and being a 'do gooder'. The latter strive to take every opportunity to help others, even those who clearly deserve no help. The former has a stricter sense of right and wrong and will not harm his interests simply to be kind to others, especially those who do not merit such kindness. He will discriminate, but when he gives of himself it is total and absolute. The 'do gooder', on the other hand, will willingly harm himself to simply give to others, unconditionally and without discrimination. Therefore, one is intelligent in his approach, and the other one simply lives his life to be a martyr. Extreme altruism is encouraged by certain religions and also some political ideologies, but it is socially very harmful - it can lead to criminals being rewarded and incompetents being promoted at the expense of capable people. Humans are designed to promote themselves and their own needs before those of others, this is how we are and how we have ensured our survival for thousands of years. Trying to impose an altruistic ideology on people is unnatural and senseless. There is no contradiction between leading a moderately selfish life and also exercising selective altruism to those who you care about - this is natural and normal human behaviour. However, moving to extremes of selfishness and/or altruism leads to anti-social behaviour and is in many cases a sign of a psychopathic personality.

Thanks for sharing this nuanced perspective! You’ve highlighted an interesting distinction between ‘do-gooder’ altruism and a balanced, self-respecting kindness. Nietzsche would probably agree that going to extremes-total self-sacrifice or total selfishness-can be destructive. It’s the tension between valuing yourself and helping others that keeps us grounded and fosters healthy social behavior

@@NexusInsight-13 True, and I've known people with self-esteem issues who saw altruism as an escape valve from their misery, but it didn't work. Being a 'nice' person makes you feel good for a while, but then the misery comes back again.

Thanks for sharing that perspective! It’s a standard view that people who do wrong might seem happier because they ignore moral constraints. However, Nietzsche would likely question whether that happiness is genuine or a shallow escape from more profound self-examination.
