Your English is actually quite good, Yuu. The best way to learn pronunciation is to listen to conversations. Movies are an excellent way to do this. Disney is perfect because they usually don't have a lot of slang and the dialogue is easy to understand. Americans tend to speak very fast and don't leave much room between words. Like any new language, learning the nuances will take time, but I think you are doing great!

More fun English. The word "before" refers to existing or being earlier than whenever the referenced thing is mentioned. The word "because" explains the cause of something. "Fore" means earlier or leading up to (preceding) something. Bode refers to living in something, whether an emotion or a physical place. Someone's abode is their home or the place where they live. The word "foreboding" then means to live in the anxiety of the time spent waiting for something to happen. These word pieces or word roots work together, like in Japanese, to make meaning.

Yuu, one thing school children use in the US to learn grammar is sentence diagramming or making a graph or drawing of sentences with the parts. To do this, you draw a horizontal line. With the sentence: "The cat sat on the mat", for example, you would write "cat". Then draw a line through the horizontal line to separate the subject from the rest of the sentence. A slanted line will hold articles like "the" as well as adjectives and strings of words describing either the verb/action (adverbs) or the recipient of the verb. After this perpendicular (Purr-pen-dic-u-lur) line (up and down line) separating the subject comes the verb. On the horizontal (hori-zon-tul) line is "cat" line then "sat mat". "On the" will be on a slanted line under the line. This way, you can add to the main words and fine-tune how you want the sentences to sound. With the sentence "The cat sat on the mat", you can then add descriptions, etc. If you want to make more than one verb or adjective, you make branches (like with Kanji) and have a horizontal line for each main word. The word "and" typically gets a line connecting the branches like a bundle of sticks. This was how my middle school taught sentence structure and made grammar more art-related or more interesting to people who like visuals when learning.

Another root word that can be helpful when learning vocabulary is con-, which means together. Words using this include "connect" (like puzzle pieces fitting together or experiencing a connection where you understand each other) and "convene" (coming together, like for a meeting). "Convene" rhymes with "seen". Another word that uses it is "contraction" (when two words come together into one, like "are not" becoming "aren't"). "Contract" is a form drawn up between two or more people to make a deal or a shared plan. "Conjecture" has two root words in it. Con- or together. And then there is -ject, which can refer to words or thoughts or meaning. "Abject" means without words. "Object" has the root word "ob-" referring to something you can see, so an object is meaning or idea you can see. "Conjecture" refers to a conclusion or understanding gathered from thinking and logic (if one thing is true then something else can also be true). For example, because one and one equals two, then two minus one equals one. The word "logic" comes from Latin "logos" which literally means "meaning". Any word that ends in -logy pulls from this. "Psychology" is the study of how a person mentally experiences the world (that is what a "psyche" is, the internal experience of the world outside). "Sociology" is the study of how people are social. Having -logy at the end of a word means it is the study of something.

A new vocabulary word: Reprieve. It means a break from something hard that you weren't really expecting but because of it you can get the rest you need. The word rhymes with receive (to get or catch as in baseball or as a gift) and retrieve (to go get such as a baseball rolled away and you need to go catch it). Reprieve was a word on my college entrance exam.

If it changes anything, I have been learning Korean for two years and I still have no grasp of the sentence structure. But watching Korean language movies and conversational videos, I comprehend more when I can see the subtitles and hear the words they are speaking. Things begin to click. I understand and read and speak simple sentences in Spanish - but when it comes to speaking it back, my brain starts to buffer and it’s like I’ve forgotten everything. I think you’re doing a great job with English. You’re able to write and speak more eloquently than most because you are using words that are less commonly used. I believe we speak more simplistically since we know synonyms and they may seem overly exaggerated if we use them. I know it might not make sense, but it’s what I believe you do!

I am from the US and have watched many of your videos. I love the way that you speak English. You make it sound very poetic, and you put sentences together in a really beautiful way. It is very different than the way we speak here, we honestly sound less cultured in my opinion. It makes me wonder if the way you learned to speak in your primary language influences the way you speak English and that's why you sound the way that you do? But I really enjoy it. I wish more of us used English the way that you do.

Yuu, more root words (parts that build meaning in words): pre- means before or leading up to, such as in preparation/prepare (to get ready by putting in work) or previews (the advertisements or ads for a movie). Another helpful root word is ab- with means without or ending (like to "abdicate" refers to step down from a position of power or "abject" means without thought like "abject terror" refers to being speechless with intense fear.

Another root word that can be helpful is this one: mono in front of a word means one. Monotone means one tone, like a mosquito makes. Adding ous to the end of the word means to focus on something. Monotonous means to focus on that one tone to the point it bothers you, like a mosquito buzzing in your ear.

An idiom or phrase that came up today was "to stick out like a sore thumb". The mental picture is a thumb in a splint (like if it got broken and needed to not move aka be immobilized) so it cannot be part of a fist. This usually means to feel like people are looking at the speaker like they don't belong or stuck out as different from the rest. For example, a blond 6 foot tall foreigner would stick out like a sore thumb in Japan.

To feel conspicuous means to feel self-conscious or like a black sheep in a herd of white sheep. For example, the girl's answers on a test were conspicuous, even though she claimed she had studied, because they were about cats instead of math.

You got a book called The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman a while back, so it may be good to know some words in "Chapter 1: How Nobody Came to the Graveyard". Nobody means a lack of a person, and has been used in stories as a name to go without being seen. In this case, it is the name of a person hiding from someone. A knife is the item in the kitchen you cut food with, and the handle is where your hand goes so you do not cut yourself on the blade or sharp end of the knife. Polished means the handle of the knife had been cleaned so much that it was shiny or the light could shine off of it. Razor is the sharp blade used to trim or cut hair on a face or shave. A fine razor is one so sharp that you don't cut yourself shaving. To slice something means you cut it, like with pieces or slices of bread or butter. Immediately means as soon as something like an event happened or occurred. Street is another word for road and is used for a road that is often in use like the road to a favorite store. To slip in or to say something or someone slipped in means to come inside without being noticed or seen. An example of a wisp is the steam that comes off tea or something hot, or what the smoke does when you blow out a candle. Another word for steam is mist, such as what comes off a pond in the morning or fog (that cloud that makes it hard to see where you are going on humid days or days when a lot of water is in the air. Water in the air is referred to as vapor.) Slithered suggests how a snake moves. Twined is like when you put string or a cord or something used to tie things together and tie things loosely together. To pause is to stop moving. Landing means the flat area of a building connected by stairs. This can include all the rooms or apartments on a floor (2nd floor, etc., on an elevator or the box that takes you up and down between floors or landings. A handkerchief is a little towel kept in a pocket if you need to sneeze, typically made of silk or cotton so you can wash and use it again. Pocket is the little bag put in clothes to hold items or things. A coat is like a heavy jacket, like what you wear when it is very cold. To wipe off something is to clean it. The word gloved means the man is wearing gloves or hand coverings for cold weather typically sewn or made from fabric instead of knitted from yarn. Knitted gloves are called mittens, because hands used to be referred to as mitts. That is where a catcher's mitt in baseball gets its name. An old tough guy phrase was "Get your mitts off me" meaning let go of me. Anyway, back to the book. A floor is the flat surface you walk on and sweep with a broom. A brightly colored anything is hard to look at because of how intense the color is, like the color has a bright light shining in your face. To surround something is to have something all around. To say a bedroom is surrounded by toys means there are toys on the floor, bed, everywhere. Half-finished means a task was started and left unfinished or not completed yet. Models are small representatives or smaller items that look like a bigger item, like a dollhouse is a little house for dolls. Barely means something or someone just made it in time like almost not making it somewhere or almost being late but getting there on time. A toddler is when a baby or infant learns to walk but is not quite ready to walk without someone to catch him or her. To totter or toddle or wobble all refers to the way babies walk when they first start walking. To flex is to spread out like to flex your fingers means to uncurl or open your hand like to reach for something or receive something. In this case, the man is moving his fingers to make them less stiff or more bendable or easier to move, suggesting his hand was sore from holding the knife. Professional is someone who does something for money. Completed is what a task is when you finish something, like when you complete your work then you can play with cats. Leather is cloth made from animal skin or hide (animal skin). Lambskin is the skin of a lamb, meaning this is the kind of leather referred to on page 8. Carpeting is the fluffy or soft and squishy floor covering known as carpet. Carpeting suggests that the entire floor in the room is covered with carpet. An attic is a storage or place for keeping or storing items for later use that is under a roof and above floors usually lived in by people. To shine is to give off light or to reflect or show the light or appearance of someone like a mirror reflects your reflection so you can look at yourself. A photograph or a photo can reflect a place or a person. A person can reflect back on an event or look back at a time or place as a memory. A casement window is a window with a heavy case around it like to keep out winter storms; these can be called storm windows or one way of weather-proofing a house to keep the weather out. To diffuse means to break up a fight or a mist. Having diff at the front of a word means at odds with or separate from, to be distinctly other. To infuse means to join together, like when tea leaves are added to hot water. A crib is a little bed where babies sleep if they are not sleeping with parents, which is common in places like the US. A crib has walls with bars (or slats) for the child to look through but not wide enough apart for a baby to squeeze through. A big problem with cribs is when babies learn how to climb out. To lower is to put down low compared to where something was before. A teddy bear is a stuffed animal bear named after Teddy Roosevelt who became famous for thinking a bear was too cute to shoot while hunting. Accustomed means to be used to how things are. Dim means there is very little light to see by. Skills is another word for abilities you can make money from or profit from, like your abilities with cameras. To sniff is to use a nose to smell, like to sniff a pretty flower to see how it smells. To ignore means to not pay attention to or to not heed (pay attention) to something or someone. To dismiss is to decide not to do something or to not appreciate something (being fired or to lose a job can be called being dismissed). To hone in on means to focus attention and energy on something. To hone in on the sound of a cat is to focus on the sound in order to find or locate the cat. Milky refers to being like or reminding one (an indirect way of saying you) of milk either because it is white in color or smells like milk. Nighttime means during the night. Daytime means during the day. A diaper is what is put on babies to keep their clothes and the surrounding area clean until the baby can use a toilet. Shampoo is what cleans hair during a shower. Rubbery means like rubber, either in texture (how it feels) or the smell of something. "Something to suck", at the bottom of page 9, means what the baby does to drink milk or what someone does when drinking something through a straw. Now you have the vocabulary to read Chapter 1 through the end of page 9 of The Graveyard Book.

I mentioned that including "ject" in a word refers to an idea about words. Ad- on a word typically means something or someone is being added to something. An adjective, then, is a word that adds to the meaning of another word.

When studying any language it's important to have the opportunity to speak it with a fellow leaner. For example, I've wanted to learn Korean language. But I don't have any opportunity to use the language, verbally, so I've not studied.

I think one very important thing is to watch programs, listen to podcasts, interviews, etc.. in the language you want to learn. It tunes your ears to the sounds and cadence of the language and eventually you hear words and phrases and start understanding better. It is difficult if you don't have people to practice with but once you develop some command of the language it is amazing how you sometimes discover opportunities you didn't know were there to practice! Some tips: slow down, enunciate, and emphasize words in your sentences. Your English is easy to understand, but in order to reach native level, you'll need to understand the tonal quality of English conversation. It's kind of like a roller coaster, going up and down in pitch, whereas "proper" Japanese speech is flat. Also, regarding pronunciation, try to understand the shape and movement of the mouth for certain sounds. Many English speakers struggle with ら・り。る。れ。ろ because they don't know the starting position of the tongue - the same for Japanese people learning "L." The English "L" starts with your tongue a bit closer to the back end of your upper teeth. Compare り with "Lee." Anyways, I hope this comment is helpful.

I think this is a great personal challenge. I remember deciding to take a German class in high school, because I live in Arizona, and many people speak Spanish here. I wanted to speak something different. I have forgotten much of what I learned because I did not have the opportunities to use it on a regular basis. I would have been better off studying Spanish. Foolishness of youth I guess. 😢

Hi Yuu, I was thinking about how you might learn more English vocabulary, and I wonder if you could access study materials for the vocabulary part of the college entrance exam called the SAT. Typically, the materials for this test have pronunciation, definitions, and examples for how to use the words in a sentence. Some even have the root word (like the pieces of Kanji that build the meaning). One of my favorite root words is circum- referring to a full circle. For example, circumstance (the whole or entire situations/events that make something possible), circumspect (-spect refers to seeing, so this is seeing something from all sides), and Circumvent (-vent referring to something happening like invent is to add to what exists in reality, so to circumvent something means to go around or to avoid).

I think you really speak rather well. Your accent is not thick and you are very understandable. I wish you luck with your practice. My advice would be to remember emphasis. The Japanese will change their pitch where Americans will say the word with more emphasis. And this is the hardest part, and you must be patient with your progress.

Did you know the word “content” is pronounced differently depending on its intended meaning? If you’re talking about a feeling of peace, you say “conTENT”, but if you’re talking about materials, you say “CONtent”

It does get irritatingly tiresome to hear you repetitively bringing up your "oh, poor me, it's so hard to speak English as a Japanese." in many videos. PLEASE stop empowering your victimhood and your deficiency! You are sabotaging yourself by thinking this way. Just change your thinking to "I am speaking English so beautifully fluent and enjoying it very much!" and repeat this mantra again and again.
