About me:
I've been making short films for 20 years, starting at age 11. I directed my first feature film, Bad is Bad, in 2010. Made for only $6,000, the film went on to reach over 7 million views and garner critical acclaim. More recently, my short film, Will "The Machine", screened and won awards at film festivals around the world. Released online in 2019, it reached over 1 million views in just a month. I also work as a video editor, cutting ads for clients such as Apple, Netflix, and Beats by Dre.

Minor fact-checking: Alex North was assigned by MGM to score "2001." North had done a great job for Kubrick on "Spartacus," right? Kubrick informed North he was planning to use existing recordings - and had already begun editing the film using that music. North was told he was free to try to come up with something better than the opening fanfare from "Also Sprach Zarathustra" and other symphonic works - and good luck with *that* assignment. The bottom line is that Kubrick had already decided on using pre-recorded music sources. The sad part is how no-one at MGM passed that information to North. He was paid for his work - and had no idea none of his music had been used. He found out at the film's premiere. 😬 Source: interviews with Alex North. I'm a Herrmann guy and a Kubrick guy. I agree with Kubrick's desire to avoid a typical Hollywood score. I can also see how Herrmann would watch the film and see it as a film composer's dream project: a two-hour film with virtually no dialogue! Kubrick listened to every "Also Sprach" recording he could. He decided on the version by the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Herbert von Karajan. Even though it was in mono, that's the one he had MGM acquire the rights to. He also had the music copied from the original master tapes. That's why it sounds so good. Me? Oh, I'm just your newest subscriber. 😸

Thanks for the correction, from what I know about Kubrick, this version sounds much more likely!

@@StandardStoryCo We're lucky to now be able to ditch the goofy myths about Kubrick and hear from people who actually knew and worked with him for decades. Have you read the memoir of this driver/mechanic/assistant Emilio D'Alessandro? It's a great book. Best wishes from Vermont! ❄️💙❄️

Herrmann was actually asked to score 2001, but for some reason wanted twice his usual fee (at which Kubrick balked), so that was the end of that. Composer Frank Cordell was also under consideration for 2001 but that did not work out. (This is according to an interview with Herrmann by Royal S. Brown in High Fidelity Magazine.) Using classical music is tricky. Classical music is among the most profound ever created, so if you want to use it in a movie, your movie better be as great as the music -- otherwise the music is going to dominate the experience. Composer John Scott told me that before he was asked to score Greystoke, Hugh Hudson attempted to track the film with classical selections, but the music had the effect of pushing the viewers away from the film as opposed to drawing them in.

The re-scored version sounds very professional, yet I also like the original soundrack, the edgy homemade sounds. It's in my opinion a matter of the feeling you want to add to the movie

This was fascinating. While the new composer did a great job, I agree with what others said, it's like too slick and too "big" for the movie and I prefer the original, which I find surprising and encouraging.

Your original score still sounds great it reminds me so much of utopia 2013 show, the score done by Cristobal Tapia de Veer. Keep it up.

Definitely used Kevins tracks in my previous shorts. Even though I hired a composer in the past it was more like: here is the film, please compose something. Ok , thanks. Now I'm finishing more personal project and I just hired (well he offered himself for free) a composer whose music scores sound super professional and I'm really excited about the process and potential outcome. What I wasn't prepared for was him asking me tons of different questions and I'm not always able to answer them. So I'm also kind of unsure what will come out of it. But at least I'm pretty sure it will be better than any stock footage I could've picked myself (doing hours and hours of searching in the process). Btw love Eastwood scores and his singing as well. Songs from his monkey movies, Honkytonk Man or ones from the 60s as Rowdy Yates. Man is a legend!

I haven’t seen Bad is Bad, but from what I’ve seen, in my humble opinion the original score is better. The new score is just way too over the top and dramatic, feels like a typical hollywood action feature. Whereas the older one gives you the indie, experimental film vibes

You're on the right track. The re-score has more polish, or "gravity," for me. Original music is the best. Even your original FL Studio stuff is good. You're the auteur so it works. Stock music is a step down but can work really well. But grabbing someone else's music (especially hit pop songs) is the worst. In my opinion it tags the director as an arrogant hack who believes that how they feel when listening to a, say Rolling Stones song, is how everyone else will feel when watching their movie. This afflicts hit blockbusters as well as low budget indies. Kubrick using Strauss somewhat ruined 2001 as well as Strauss, for me. Keep hiring musicians (like the harmonica guy, awesome move) or write your own, but stay away from popular music. That's my (arrogant) opinion, anyhow.
