I want “All The Things” 😂 making bread, making cheese, in the garden, walking the land, farming the land, harvest, selling the harvest, discussing all your future plans, would have loved to see how you hooked up the water system. Mornings at the farm would be a great segway into your videos because I love how the fog ascends in the mornings. Where the kids go to school. How is their Portuguese lessons going. How proficient are you both in the language. I hope this helps. I do like numbering the episodes so if we missed something we can catch up. You may also consider hiring a young person, tech savvy teen or early 20’s college neighbor in the village to do the filming and editing until you get the hang of it. Love this so much. Looking forward to following along. Life is Beautiful ❤

😂 Okay, I'll get on all of that! I think the next couple of "extras" we have planned currently are an abbreviated farm tour, a bit about the raised beds, and some recipe details, but I will add all of that to the list for upcoming chapters and/or supplemental videos. And we are definitely interested in finding a young-someone to help, but it's not as easy as you might think... still in the process. Thanks for the feedback, the suggestions and all of the positive energy and I'm so glad you'll be following along!

Enjoying your videos. Maybe some tours the first few episodes to bring us up to speed with your property and how it all connects. I enjoy the day to day life with recipes thrown in, crafts ie - making your own clothes etc, dyi and gardening thrown in and the running of your business. Would also love to see more of your area and perhaps some visits to other gardeners, small businesses, artisans in the community. Thanks so much 😊

I'm so glad you're enjoying them and thank you for taking the time to give feedback 🙂. One of our top priorities for some "extra" content is an (abbreviated) farm tour so people can get oriented a bit with our space, so we'll be getting that out as soon as possible. We will definitely be mixing in recipes, crafts, gardening and all of that, both in the chapters as well as with some other supplemental content. We're still working out the details of how all of this will work out, but we'll have new content for you guys to check out soon. I really like the idea of local visits! I'll be thinking on that to figure out the best way to incorporate that into the channel. Thank you for the inspiration 😁.

@@SiliconToSoil Both sound great, maybe an abbreviated tour to let people see all the different areas you have with differing projects on the go, then you can go into more detail like you were planning with upcoming videos. While I generally gravitate towards content that is much more beginning from scratch and lower scale, I real enjoyed your style. I think I have a good idea of from where you came, but little knowledge of your homestead and all the buildings and property it entails. Once I understand that better, just being taken through your daily life that provides you enrichment would be welcomed. Thank you for sharing. In regards to your irrigation, we use a system called B-Hyve that you attach to a water spigot. You can program multiple zones (we have 4) and it is controlled via an app on our phones. The multiple zones helped with the water pressure issue we experienced. Maybe it will work for you as well.

Thank you for such a lovely and thoughtful message 🙂. Where in the North are you guys? We feel the same way about the culture and the people here. We have been so warmly welcomed. Our project as a whole is meant to be a bit of a community hub in the future. We want to have offerings like farm visits for the local schools, workshops taught by us, friends and locals, possibly free concerts, events and the like. If I'm honest, most of that is probably more on the 5-year plan due to the amount of work we have to do just to get things up-and-running, but it is what we are working toward. We plan to do some introductions of both the humans and other animals on the farm in the future, but that also will be dependent on which of the people that help us here have interest in being introduced... so we will be leaving that choice to them. We'll see what the future brings there 🙂. And yes! We're plan to have much more of what we prepare here on future chapters and are thinking also about possibly having some supplemental content specifically dedicated to more in-depth explanations of recipes, fermentation, preservation and the like. Would that be something that would be interesting to you? Regarding a farm visit. We're not "officially" open to visits, but it would be our pleasure to show you around sometime if you're interested 🙂.

Hello! And yes, I was decently proficient in Spanish, as well, before learning Portuguese and I think I have almost completely written over the Spanish language parts of my brain with Portuguese, but the Spanish words still sneak out on occasion. So I speak a mixture of English, Portuguese and Spanish, many times unintentionally intermixed 😂. And irrigation systems are a life-saver. I'm glad you guys have gotten that going as well. As much as I love the tranquility of watering things and listening to the birds, multiple hours a day can be a bit much. Regarding real estate, the only site I know here that really seems to have most of the properties (at least the ones being sold through agencies) on it is idealista.pt. Unfortunately the real estate agent who helped us find our place is no longer available, but we have a couple of local contacts of agents who have helped some friends find places. If you guys decide to move forward with that, let me know via email (I think it's listed here somewhere on the channel, but if not, let me know and I'll get it to you) and I can get you in touch with a few options. Thank you again for the feedback! Yes, farm tour and more on recipes to come very shortly. Maybe we can have a specific "extra" video with some information about our philosophy and some specifics about how we deal with pests in the garden and the orchard. Would that be of interest? The first two chapters were created with DaVinci Resolve which is a very powerful, free program. Moving forward, though, we are going to be using iMovie and then possibly Final Cut Pro in the future if we need more functionality. We have really just started the transition, so I can report back after we've been using it for a while. The primary reason for the switch is that DaVinci Resolve seems to be incredibly powerful, but is also very complex with a lot of very fine control that we just don't ned at this point in our adventure. And due to the fact that we are not creating a feature film or anything like that, and that I'm a complete newb in the area, we're going to start with a useful, but much less complex option so we can focus on the content more than the processing of it... at least until we get more comfortable 🙂.

You talked briefly about how you ended up with your property. Can you expand on that? Why did you settle in Porto area and not Algarve or central Portugal? Also, I’m curious to know how much you paid for your land. Mainly I want to compare the areas. We are looking to move to Portugal in the future but current NHR situation may be a deterrent. So we may do long visits for now. Also, will you consider farm stays in the future once you are set up? Love your videos and how you are living with the land around you. Thank you.
@SiliconToSoil
@SiliconToSoil 2 ай бұрын
Hello! And thank you for the feedback. I can definitely expand on our choice in location in a future episode, but to give you the short(ish) answer, for us it was a combination of cultural, geographical and climate factors. We were really looking for a place that had a community of primarily "locals," where, in the Algarve, for example, the expat numbers are astronomically higher than where we ended up, which is ideal for some, but wasn't what we were looking for. I also have a strong affinity for green things and the north tends to be more lush than farther south. Additionally, the higher amount of rainfall in the north not only is responsible for the green-ness, but also makes certain aspects of farming much less stressful. We are also mountains, hills and rivers kind of people so the geography of the north was more to our liking. For those who are more drawn to the beaches and oceans, though there are some beautiful ones in the north, they tend to land in the central or southern part of the country. Lastly, we prefer the vibe of Porto, Braga and Guimarães (all cities all within about an hour of us) to Lisbon. Also a personal preference, but it was definitely a factor. I hope that helps. Regarding farm stays, yes! One of our main goals is to have ways to share what we are building here with people. We currently have occasional, longer-term work-stays, but we only have a max capacity for 4 at the moment. In the future, we hope to have places for people to stay, potentially take courses, get their hands in the soil, and enjoy the farm.

So, where we are, it tends to be in the 80's and 90's in the hottest months and, in the coldest months, it generally stays in the 40's and 50's during the day and rarely goes below freezing at night. So, it's actually quite similar to where we were in CA, but with more rain. We have a bit of a micro-climate due to our proximity to the river, and it gets a bit colder as you get higher into the hills/mountains. I love the fact that water shortages are very rare due to the amount of rainfall, but some might prefer the dryer weather of the south. It is also gets quite a bit warmer the farther south you go, but it is plenty warm for our tastes here. I lived in CT for four years and the weather where we are is much warmer in the winters and less humid in the summers. I hope that helps and we hope to see you in Portugal soon!

Thank you 🙂! There were actually quite a few reasons, maybe I can touch on that in an upcoming chapter, but the short-ish version is that, from the research we did when we were deciding where to go, Portugal was the friendliness to expats, had a climate that was most aligned with what we were looking for and, once we came to visit the first time, we just fell in love with the people and the culture... so the search ended there 🙂.

Do you use kefir for the creme cheese only or mix it with sour cream , cream or something else? Out of kefir you become a cotton cheese -nearly like this or more like a cream cheese? It’s really interesting for me, cause I made different cheeses with lab, citron,… to become a cheese brake and press it to cheese. I love the process out of cooking, waiting, experimenting, testing, being better, or have a good result. I have a garden too, not a big farm, only 300 qm self-sufficient garden, one small and one bigger greenhouse. Totally together we have 1,7 ha land. A little forest with a small still water. Ducks and swans breed there, and I don’t want to disturb them, but I like to sit there and watching them. In my garden I use a mix out of Row mixed culture according to Gertrude Franck and Permaculture. some bed is only permaculture. There are tea herbs, potatos, asparagus, artichoke,… The rest is row mixed culture. In the forest is a pice of land, a kind of pasture, but it used to be used as a field, but it is difficult to access and can no longer be worked with tractors due to tree growth. And I can't manage that alongside my job at the youth welfare office. But it will be a dream from me. Thanks for your input. I’m always sourcing for people, they inspire me. Thank you very much..

Hello! Thank you so much for your comment and questions. I just use milk kefir, drain out the liquid for about half a day, add salt, drain again for 2-4 hours or to the consistency of cream cheese that I'm looking for, then add herbs, honey, or whatever I have available and sounds good on that particular day. If you are interested in cheese made from kefir, I found a great book (I'll link it below) of a guy who's changing the way we look at cheesemaking. He's taking the natural approach to making cheese... maybe equivalent to what sourdough is to bread, looking into cheesemaking before the industrial cultures and things like that. It has been a really interesting read to me and is providing me with endless opportunities to experiment. Highly recommended. Your farm sounds like a little slice of paradise 🙂. And it sounds like you are doing a huge amount already in addition to what I imagine is an emotional and energy-heavy career. Congratulations on what you have accomplished and I hope you get to your dream pasture when the time is right. Hello! I'm sorry, I think I caught some of that, but I didn't quite understand the overall gist other than maybe that long monologs are hard to listen to... Any chance you might be able to explain again?

Immediately subscribed! I spent 7 months in the terrible Argentina, where in 2003 we thought with my wife we had it all. I'm again in my beloved home near the Coimbra Stadium, where I live since 2021. May be you got not the same amount of money as in the States (Elon Musk wants an investment of mine through ex Twitter), but you got got safety and warmth in the north of Portugal. The Lisbon area is not the same. 72 years old widower?. I´ve been already caught at 52 with a stroke, coma, wheelchair, NDE, etc in 2005 in Argentina. They sent me back (from upstairs). So I celebrated my 70 years making 10 Km in Coimbra in a marathon time (for my age class). My goal is calisthenics for 2026. After the tourism months, I´ll travel to Porto, I have a lot of friends there. Hope we´ll meet. Greetings !!

Thank you so much for the support. It sounds like you've had quite an adventure. I don't know it well, but from our bit of experience, Coimbra seems like a really beautiful city. Congratulation on your marathon success! We'll be around, so just let us know when you're in the area 🙂.
