The reason you take the rings OFF your completed and cooled canned items is so if the lid does, by chance, come unsealed……if it has a ring on it….you wouldn’t know soon enough that it spoiled and not to eat it! IT IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT and something I learned from MY grandma 55years ago…..and I have taught my children and grandchildren….

Just a quick tip about Frozen milk...It is amazing freezing milk then letting it thaw/melt into a pot. This is called Freeze distilling and World Barista champions often use this method and I use it regularly in my coffee instead of regular milk or cream. The fats will thaw quicker than the water so it concentrates the flavors. Just don't let it completely melt as the point is to remove water content. Also great for other milk needs.

a note on water bath canning - no reason you can't do it outdoors on a gas burner or even a fire pit or charcoal grill. We do that for large batch canning. We set up a folding table with cafeteria trays lined with dishtowels for the jars. It allows us to run much larger water baths than I can run stove top, and we don't heat up the house.

Raspberry icecream is fantastic! If you freeze dry raspberries you can powder them in a grinder and store the powder. That will use up a massive amount of berries of any kind. Raspberry powder in cake mix will make a tasty raspberry cake or cupcake. You can make raspberry raisins. Dried fruit run through a meat grinder and mixed with a bit of nuts and just enough honey to hold shape make good fruit balls that give you lots of energy and multiple servings of fruit from a golf ball sized serving. The more types of fruit added the tastier it is!

1) You can cut the acid in your tomato sauce by cooking in one shredded carrot per pot of sauce. The carrot cuts the acid and because it is shredded, the carrot will "disappear" into the sauce. 2) Upright freezers can pop open if you lose power long enough for the temp to rise high enough to break the seal. You do NOT want to have to clean that up. Stick with the chest freezers.
@JS-px3et
@JS-px3et 4 ай бұрын
So true. Happened to me. Lost ½ beef and whole pig when power was off. Also, upright freezers allow the cold to "flow" out every time the door is opened. A chest type keeps the cold in place.

I think it’s a great point to make and perhaps a reality check for people thinking about moving towards a more self sustainable lifestyle that it takes a lot of skills and time. Mice will make short work of plastic buckets - I used to raise them so I know. I'm glad you vermin-proofed your basement but I would still store those on a higher shelf + turn them all the way around for an inspection regularly. It's not that they can't climb to a higher shelf, but having them on the ground it's dark around and behind them and there are more angles they can attack it from so placing it higher up would slow them down. As for checking them, the hope is that you catch it partway through their efforts. Mice can fit through a space the width of a pencil!

I suggest that you KEEP your raspberry bushes and abundant crops and merely ADD elderberry bushes. When you do something well, stick to it. TRADE with someone else who has abundance of those apples that you buy. I had an organic pineapple farm until HURRICANE ISN devastated it. I always traded for mangoes, avocados, blueberries, etc. Just a suggestion. Y'all are doing fantastic! Is Dutch VALLEY organic bulk food? Do u buy organic oats, etc? @More Than Farmers

I really appreciate your video it’s so spot on, I also love that y’all have a teachable spirit. By this first video I’ve ever seen I can tell you have really embraced the old life. To my husband and I it’s just how you do life. It’s great to see the generation after us is keeping it going well done guys. My daughter is the same way. It brings peace and comfort to know in a natural disaster or just every day life your good, Right? I feel bad for those who cannot do these things and more sad for those who can and do not. Such a beautiful basement grocery storage. The sand trick with carrots really does work it’s amazing. Ice blocks with sand sawdust and burlap worked in my great grand mother’s ice house. My great Grandfather made a small opening through the wall for their cold storage and ventilation that operated during the warm weather. She had a spring house as well out side in the creek. Her first home was an adobe. I loved it even to this day. Looking forward to the next videos. What a treasure y’all are. ♥️👍🇺🇸🙏Brooks, Oregon.

For your cold room you should look into what's referred to as a cool bot if im remembering the name correctly. It essentially turns your basic window ac, overides the governor on it to allow you to make it as cold as you want. And it's not expensive. All yould need to maybe do would be add some insulation on you haven't done so yet with. Love your cellar lol aka basement. Miss having a basement up north....back in Texas for over a decade now and all we have are built in root cellars if you can find a German or czech built home from late 1800s to early 1900s....or your typical "storm shelter" for tornadoes which i believe theyd have for sure used as cold or root cellars

20:16 I love this part the most. Of course the ideal is to be 100% self-sufficient and grow all our own food and not have to rely on grocery stores during things like power outages or whatnot, but realistically, like you said in your example from your cow, it's nice to have grocery stores available as a back up or supplement. As much as I would LOVE for the world to go back to everyone growing their own gardens and being their own grocers, it's not really realistic in this day and age, not like it was for our pioneer ancestors or indigenous ancestors. And thank God we have things like grocery stores to fall back on. There are just some years that crops don't yield (which the absolute importance of preserving food), so during those times it's a great luxury to have grocery stores available. I love that you're so honest and humble about that.

I agree with you. And I work in healthcare ... I am not trained in wholistic or natural medicine either. I think we rely SO much on pharma. I think it has it's place, and I think it definitely makes a difference for some. But we've come to this place where we just have this mentality where we turn to medication. What we need to do is take care of our bodies... and a huge part of that is what we put INTO our bodies. Great video, great work. Keep it up.

Newly subscribed! Y’all are awesome. Thanks for giving price comparisons on the food. I follow other homesteaders/farmers and I’ve come to appreciate H‑E‑B prices a lot more. I live in Michigan. And when Iwas growing up in our Family my Parents every year we would do Canning & Freezing every Fall . My Father grew up on a Dairy Farm & they raised Chickens & they Plowed & Planted & Harvested different Crops. 86 Acres of them. There is nothing like Fresh Vegetables & Fresh Fruits. & homemade cooking. And for sure there is nothing like Canning & freezing things to eat from. And love & enjoy. Our Parents passed away many years ago. But, i have fond Memories of them. And Canning & Freezing is one of those good " Family Memories that I have & remember every year. I just found your You Tube Channel. I will start watching & listening to you when I can. I am a full time Caregiver for many years now.

You are a true gift to all your viewers. You just popped up on my feed and it's been a joy watching your video. I'm old enough to be your mom or maybe your grandma and I'm so impressed with your accomplishments. Truly! I'd love to have some basic information; how big is your homestead IE land versus square footage of your home. Dad said he built the basement to be impenetrable to mice. That's true genius and I would love to know how that was accomplished. How direct you are is such a pleasure to watch. You seem to answer the questions the viewer would have just in the moment before they're thinking it. Brilliant! I also would love to know the cost of maintaining the garden. What was the financial investment to start the garden versus what is the financial investment maintain it and grow it. I also would love to know something probably to personal. Mom mentioned that she is healing from a health condition and working the root cause by the way that she eats and drinks. Would you mind sharing what the health issue is? I was diagnosed with hashimoto's autoimmune disease and it has been a desperate struggle. I was in a wheelchair for almost a year. Have since been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy Epstein-Barr virus and multiple other things. I truly believe the American diet is poisoning us on purpose. I would love to have a homestead but I'm probably too old and too ill to accomplish this. But I have a daughter who could. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for such a beautiful honest video. God bless you and your family now and always. 🙏💖🙏

15:23 if you do grow oregano next year, I recommend golden oregano. It’s so beautiful , really delicious and it comes back every year even bigger and more lush, even with me basically ignoring it completely other than harvesting it. It looks particularly pretty next to English lavender which I tend to pick together for bouquets.

BIIIIIIIIIIIG kudos to you guys! I grew up in a village, like you guys live, so know everything. Then moved, lived in many different cities throughout US, then moved out of US (partly because of no food in stores). Because of many health issues, I've learned so much about health, and I've stopped eating sugar (completely, in all forms), and currently eating carnivore, however before that it was keto. My daughter has eczema, and meat diet definitey helps. I've noticed that you have some pimples - I used to have a ton of them, and I was addicted to sugar and sweets. What helped me to beat my sugar (and flour) addiction, was ACV (apple cider vinegar) water. 1 TB SP of ACV 1 TB SP of freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 glass of water Drink in the morning on empty stomach (or before every meal, if you want to lose weight), and that did its magic! I've lost a lot of weight (certainly didn't notice that problem with you guys), but I feel great, I eat once, sometimes 2 times a day (not hungry), so much simpler to shop and cook (meat products :))). I eat nose to tail and accustomed to the lifestyle that you guys show. One negative about your videso, though - if anything crappy happens in the country/neighboorhood, people know that you have a lot of food

Ha e you thought about a summer kitchen? Outside kitchen. Doesn't need to be large but opening window and large door..think sliding glass. You can process meaT for canning/ freezing plus canning, drying, gift making. You just mentioned raspberries while I am watching this.can up some. Raspberry jelly or jam for gifts...solves 2 things..gifts and freezer space.
Do THIS to Stay OUT of the Grocery Store and be MORE SELF-SUFFICIENT
