I was looking forward to your series on restoring and sharpening katana's. Also interested in your voyage with sharpening and using straight razors. I like to see microscope progression of sharpened edges and Bess tests of various edges. Random search of knife and razor sharpening videos on KZbin produces many hack videos that make me cringe. I do not know how new people can wade through the trash to find actual good advice on sharpening. I look forward to your new adventures and happiness with your family.

Good evening Ryky, thanks for being my first inspiration, you made me want to get mine started. Thank you for all of this information I will try to stay positive as I keep moving forward. I love that you keep your family first. I may not know much either. lol Thank you for putting your self out there and opening up into who you are. The Christians that spouted those things are not who they say they are. It seems like life is like sharpening a knife. 😊 Your only good as what you put into your self and use to hone your life to get to the degree of life your looking for. Looking forward to all of your future conversations and adventures! Commented as I watched. Sorry, to have miss this. I was at work. I love these conversations as well. I got to do some reflecting with you. Thank you for that. Good night good sir.

Great talk Ryky! You have clearly worked very hard to be where you are in life. You started off in life with struggles that you overcame and learned from. You continue to grow and improve yourself as you go. I would much rather watch content that you put out than someone from Hollywood who has lost their perspective on how to treat their family and friends right. Maybe what you have accomplished in your personal life, KZbin, and Burrfection will be healthier and more satisfying than working for someone else in Hollywood. You are a great example and inspiration.

Ryky, thank you for the thoughtful reflection. It was really lovely. I’m glad you found the comments/questions interesting and understood them- I typed it all out somewhat haphazardly. In retrospect it was a little nonchalant and prying. And yes, I thought your response was relevant to my own life. I find your discipline, and care for dignity and order, inspiring. Your thirst for progression and movement is also relatable. And I appreciate your measured assessment of the wealthy Christian issue. I’m with you- I think there is a middle way, something between Scrooge McDuck and John the Baptist. At least when it comes to what possessions we allow ourselves to accumulate when we didn’t join the priesthood, and instead are trying to get by in the world and do right by the families we’ve created. The negative comments you saw likely came from people who haven’t had the same opportunities that we have, and thus fail to appreciate the real, practical aspects of the dilemma. They instead frame the issue in a very ideological way, fueled at least in part by resentment. Your background is more turbulent and varied than mine- my parents divorced too, but things were fairly stable living with my mother until the end of high school. By the time more massive complications arose, I had started college. I managed to stay in, completing my education pretty much straight through. In the end I became a psychiatrist. Some parts of the journey I shook up with the occasional move and professional initiative, but it was overall more contained than your stuff. Still, I don’t think I handled my stresses as well as you handled yours, by the sounds of it. I’ve found it very difficult to navigate my own existential woes and emotions as I try to work out matters of marriage, kids, faith, work, and philosophy. Nothing really catastrophic, but the learning seems to never end. Onward and upward, friend!

I admire your self discipline. It is a blessing from God. True love can not be from moralism, which is a form of selfishness anyway. Therefore I appreciate your generosity coming from the right place. One question, with such flexibility in your work life, with almost no survival pressure, how do you maintain the self discipline and passion of working for God? I’m in similar situations but I have found lacking of working with a team very often bothers me and being a procrastinator makes it hard to set up achievable goals.

What are your thoughts on on Apex Ultra? Why is it so hard to learn how to sharpen properly? Why haven’t there been many new steels in Japanese knife making? I have a business idea related to kitchen knives, should I give it a shot? (How was it for you launching your businesses?)
