I admire your self discipline. It is a blessing from God. True love can not be from moralism, which is a form of selfishness anyway. Therefore I appreciate your generosity coming from the right place. One question, with such flexibility in your work life, with almost no survival pressure, how do you maintain the self discipline and passion of working for God? I’m in similar situations but I have found lacking of working with a team very often bothers me and being a procrastinator makes it hard to set up achievable goals.

Hello Ryky, I’ve been watching your videos for several years now. Since I was a little kid, I’ve been fascinated by Japanese culture and always enjoyed cooking. A few years ago, I came across one of your videos, and it completely changed my perspective on knives. Over the years, I kept watching your videos and delved deeper and deeper into Knifes, two years ago, I decided to buy a whetstone on Amazon. I started practicing with my parents’ old chef’s knives, and after consistent practice, I was finally able to sharpen a knife and take it to a whole new level of sharpness. This transformed cooking into a completely different experience for me. I’ve always enjoyed cooking, watched videos about it, and had fun in the kitchen, but using sharp knives made it an entirely new and positive experience. Last year, thanks to my student job, I was able to afford better whetstones, and I immediately began sharpening our main chef knife a Santoku. I’m from Germany, and our knives are typically European in terms of steel, shape, and not the most expensive ones, including our Santoku knife. The new whetstones I bought were the Cerax 1000 grit and Shapton Pro 2000 grit, which heard about through your video “Don’t Ruin Your Japanese Knife: The Best Whetstones for Optimal Care.” With these stones, I was able to sharpen our knives to the point where I could cut a wave into a piece of paper for the first time. It has always been my dream to own a Japanese knife. I’ve come close to buying one several times, but the price, shipping, and customs fees always held me back, as I could use the money better for other things I needed. This Christmas, I finally made my dream come true and purchased my first Japanese knife the Naru “Hatsukou Series” Aogami #2 Kurouchi Bunka from your recent video “Knife of the Year: Insane Value Under $100”. I wanted to take a moment to thank you, Ryky, as the person behind Burrfection. Your videos helped me find my way into the world of knives, giving me a completely new perspective on knives and their traditions. My passion and interest in cooking have also reached a whole new level since then. Your videos have been incredibly helpful in teaching me how to properly use a whetstone, choose the right one, and much more. I always look forward to your videos, whether on Burrfection or here, and I wish you all the best for the future. Best regards, Leonard

Ryky, thank you for the thoughtful reflection. It was really lovely. I’m glad you found the comments/questions interesting and understood them- I typed it all out somewhat haphazardly. In retrospect it was a little nonchalant and prying. And yes, I thought your response was relevant to my own life. I find your discipline, and care for dignity and order, inspiring. Your thirst for progression and movement is also relatable. And I appreciate your measured assessment of the wealthy Christian issue. I’m with you- I think there is a middle way, something between Scrooge McDuck and John the Baptist. At least when it comes to what possessions we allow ourselves to accumulate when we didn’t join the priesthood, and instead are trying to get by in the world and do right by the families we’ve created. The negative comments you saw likely came from people who haven’t had the same opportunities that we have, and thus fail to appreciate the real, practical aspects of the dilemma. They instead frame the issue in a very ideological way, fueled at least in part by resentment. Your background is more turbulent and varied than mine- my parents divorced too, but things were fairly stable living with my mother until the end of high school. By the time more massive complications arose, I had started college. I managed to stay in, completing my education pretty much straight through. In the end I became a psychiatrist. Some parts of the journey I shook up with the occasional move and professional initiative, but it was overall more contained than your stuff. Still, I don’t think I handled my stresses as well as you handled yours, by the sounds of it. I’ve found it very difficult to navigate my own existential woes and emotions as I try to work out matters of marriage, kids, faith, work, and philosophy. Nothing really catastrophic, but the learning seems to never end. Onward and upward, friend!

Good evening Ryky, thanks for being my first inspiration, you made me want to get mine started. Thank you for all of this information I will try to stay positive as I keep moving forward. I love that you keep your family first. I may not know much either. lol Thank you for putting your self out there and opening up into who you are. The Christians that spouted those things are not who they say they are. It seems like life is like sharpening a knife. 😊 Your only good as what you put into your self and use to hone your life to get to the degree of life your looking for. Looking forward to all of your future conversations and adventures! Commented as I watched. Sorry, to have miss this. I was at work. I love these conversations as well. I got to do some reflecting with you. Thank you for that. Good night good sir.

Great talk Ryky! You have clearly worked very hard to be where you are in life. You started off in life with struggles that you overcame and learned from. You continue to grow and improve yourself as you go. I would much rather watch content that you put out than someone from Hollywood who has lost their perspective on how to treat their family and friends right. Maybe what you have accomplished in your personal life, KZbin, and Burrfection will be healthier and more satisfying than working for someone else in Hollywood. You are a great example and inspiration.

What are your thoughts on on Apex Ultra? Why is it so hard to learn how to sharpen properly? Why haven’t there been many new steels in Japanese knife making? I have a business idea related to kitchen knives, should I give it a shot? (How was it for you launching your businesses?)

I was looking forward to your series on restoring and sharpening katana's. Also interested in your voyage with sharpening and using straight razors. I like to see microscope progression of sharpened edges and Bess tests of various edges. Random search of knife and razor sharpening videos on KZbin produces many hack videos that make me cringe. I do not know how new people can wade through the trash to find actual good advice on sharpening. I look forward to your new adventures and happiness with your family.

Good morning, I just want to say between watching you through some of your videos and my wife getting me a new set of knives. I am excited to continue to follow your channels and to learn how to take care of them and maybe some of my old ones too 😅… Thank you for your time and what you do. What has been your favorite part of your journey and what was the least favorite? What is the number one recommendation for sharpening stones - also vs pull through sharpeners like portable KAI on Shuns web page for a beginner? Wear are you from? What made you want to join the world of KZbin? Do you feel that you have grown in the way you wanted to with your channel/channels? And how is the family and how did it go for you when you first made the decision to start a KZbin channel, was everyone on board or did it take some convincing? Ryky, thank you again for your time and any answers/ information for a person like myself that’s new to the world of KZbin, would be an honor to hear or see a response. God bless you and yours.

Thank you, friend. I just watched your most recent video and I think you may have covered some of my questions already. Thanks for taking the time away from your family and work to read and respond. Life is too short to not reach out and talk to people and make friends. After watching your latest video/post I am glad to get to talk to someone that has mad a stand for what they believe in. If I may, because you opened up to us. Hear is something about me. I am a talker lol, I grew up in Arkansas, lived in not the best part of town growing up. But, my family moved around and as I grew up tried to fit in at school and never really felt like I belonged or had a true friend. Fast forward went to college, then drop out worked and did the online classes. Fast forward went back met my wife and decided to help her reach her goals and follow her to Memphis,TN and work in the apartments doing maintenance. Fast forward worked for Nestle(not the chocolate factory)😂. Fast forward worked for Sig Sauer for a short time, had some family issues come up stopped there and fast forward still working together with my wife on our family and work life. And now here I am just got our kids to bed and writing/ talking to you. As you know young children don’t always sleep through the night lol it’s 1:00am in the morning. Well it was nice to meet you in your video today and to get to know you more as you continue to move forward in life. Hope to get to talk more. I really do appreciate your input and time you put into your work. God bless you and yours, your new found friend J.W. Good night, hope this does not wake you up with a notification. If so my deepest apologies.

I’ve watched you for years now, since the beginning or very close to it. I never stuck with the knife hobby but still check your videos when I see a new one up. You’ve been through so much with respect to your work on this channel alone. Moving around, trying different recording setups and videos approaches, giving away product from failed ventures (I think I gifted those jeans to my brother in law), different sponsors, dealing with criticism, sorting out what’s useful and what’s not (I found the Dalstrong-hating purists really obnoxious even back then, who cares if whatever company’s quality-cost ratio isn’t top of the pack, Redditors can be so annoying), figuring out your own role in the internet knife community. I enjoyed seeing it unfold. I also started a family as I grew in a different professional industry- our paths are similar in a lot of ways. Are you happy with how things have panned out overall? I know this sort of thing is only so important to us as Christians. But are you satisfied with where things have landed generally in material terms? More importantly, has it been useful for growing in virtue? Good for the family in the end?

🌺You should clear out the leaves around your wasabi area. This will help with keeping slugs/snails (you can also use sluggo plus) and fungal issues. Maybe put a shade cloth over the top too since you have it under a tree. By the way you didn't list the pots in your description.

I have 6 Daruma wasabi growing in 5 gallon pots. I live in LA in the South Bay along the coast. I'm in zone 10b and so far, so good. I catch water in rain barrels and keep the pots wet but not drenched. I feed with organic 5-5-5 fertilizer and use Sluggo (iron phosphate) to control slugs and snails. My soil is standard potting soil. Shade is must with dappled sunshine. I periodically spray with Monterey Disease Control and Spinosad for mildew and bugs.

I also use azomite for minerals to mimic soil by a running stream which is the natural habitat of wasabi.

Hi, I am a beginner wasabi farmer in Korea. I see that you prune the leaves. Is it better to prune the leaves?
@rykytran9 ай бұрын
pruning leaves encourages the wasabi to make more young leaves but will inhibit the rhizome's overall size. so, if you want the wasabi leaves monthly, go ahead and prune. if your goal is for a larger wasabi rhizome, then do not prune

I don't think you gave an update on the difference between the 3 plants where you harvested to leaves and the 3 you didn't. I was also looking forward to you sharing how you divide the mature plants. I had three wasabi plants in the CA bay area, two of them I lost to root rot which taught me a lot about how important drainage is. I've also heard they can be grown in ponds with basket pots, so far I'm nursing the one plant i have left, but i have a small pond - I'll give that try next year if i successfully divide the one plant i have left. Crossing my fingers.

Check out for Wasabi Mosaic Virus. I lost all my (more than 1 year old) wasabi plants after one day I brought one little infected plant ;( Once plant is infected, there is no cure… others will get infected quickly by your tools and insect’s bite. It takes 1-3 months before the wasabi shows disease signs (starts with smaller and curly leaves) from the moment it got infected.

@@rykytran A quick question. Have you ever seen it where a wasabi plant has many diminuative leaves? Mine's grown a lot of leaves but they're all really small (the size of a coin) and have stayed this way for at least a month now. It does have some larger leaves, but only about 5. I'm growing it in a tall 2L pot.
