I found out my dog Daisy has terminal metastatic cancer this week. She was the ring bearer at my wedding, she slept on the bed with my wife while she was pregnant with our daughter, and she has been my best friend through many dangers. my head canon, with the info so far, is that during filming, tolkien the reporter was documenting the adventure and turned it into the books that, in-hopkinson-universe, acted partially as promotional material for the "reality show" while the films were being edited (which took a bit).
