A neighbor taught me to make the traditional Cathedral Windows decades ago. When I decided to make one myself, I was so disappointed to see that everyone was doing it by machine. It just doesn't look the same. Thank you for this refresher on making it by hand.

Thank you! My mother used to make these, but I never tried. Now, one of my sisters and I are going to work together and make these. This looks exactly how our mother did it. Great, concise video!

Great! It is so fun to do this pattern with someone else. Just don't go for a king size like my mother-in-law and I did! There are several other videos related to Cathedral Window.

Thank you so much for these tutorials, Stephanie! My 80-year old aunt has a cathedral windows quilt that her grandmother made, and I've admired it for many years. It looks so difficult to do that I was intimidated to even try the pattern. You made it look so much less complicated than I expected, and I have now made 8 squares in pursuit of making a small table runner. Take care, Liza

Thank you for sharing! My great aunt made me promise to sew one of these quilts many years ago and I remember her showing me a different way to make the folds. I think your way might be easier.

Hi, that was the way I learned from my mother-in-law; I vaguely remember another way that sewed the edges of 2 squares together , leaving a opening in one side, and then turned it right side out. That is all I remember about it. You will be hooked on these once you start. Go!

Excellent! My mother-in-law wrote instructions for this quilt she gave us. She didn’t have the best handwriting and I couldn’t read it. Now this explains and shows how!! Thank you 🙏🏻 She made eight quilts for her 8 children. At her funeral ours was the only one in good enough shape to show. That was years ago, your video brought back good memories ❤️

Can you add a small square of batting under the 2 inch square or would that make it too bulky? Thank you for the BEST video on KZbin for this type of quilt. It's been on my "quilting bucket list" for many years. After watching your video- I'm ready to give it a try!

I'm loving this method! Thank you so much. One question... where do you tie off your threads??
@StephanieKitchens4340
@StephanieKitchens4340 2 жыл бұрын
If there is a knot on the thread's ending I slide the needle and thread between the muslin layers so the know disappears. Enjoy!

When I sew 2 squares together, I place them back sides together so there won't be a ridge of seams on the back of the quilt, but on the front. The seam ridge gets covered up by the colored square.

Thank you so much for this video,, this is my next project, I have all my supplies and am ready to go. I have a question, is there an easy way of doing the 1/4” edges? I know there pressed but I am planning on doing so many of them and I was wonder how to do them quickly but accurately. If you could show me or tell me I would appreciate it so much.
@StephanieKitchens4340

I generally take a mechanical pencil and mark the 1/4" lightly, fold, and press. Once you do this a few times, you will not need the pencil; you will gauge the 1/4", fold, and press. I hope you love this project!

Can you put them together in 4 square blocks, and then sew the blocks together at the end (instead of the strips), filling in the empty "windows"? It would be easier for me to take it on trips. Also, could this be done in something other than white? I would love to do a primitive looking one or one in a denim type fabric.
@StephanieKitchens4340
@StephanieKitchens4340 7 ай бұрын
It seems that any number of square blocks could be sewn together...2 x 2, 3 x 3, etc. that you were comfortable sewing and filling in the windows. It can be done with any color. The reason for muslin is that is very flexible and easy to 'mold'. You could always experiment by doing a couple squares with the base fabric you are thinking about. Good luck!

I’m a new subscriber and new to quilting. What size needles are the best for sewing this and what weight thread, please? I haven’t sewn in 40 yrs……
@StephanieKitchens4340
@StephanieKitchens4340 Жыл бұрын
My best advice is to try different sharp needles that you have/get with eyes you can thread. As you sew you will discover which needle works best for sewing cathedral windows. I use regular, good thread; give it a tug and if it breaks, try another one. Use muslin for the base material...not too cheap but not the most expensive. It has such lovely stretch to make it fit. The colored blocks work well with cotton fabric. Be sure to rinse reds, dark blues to prevent color runnlng if washed. I am making a Cathedral Window pillow right now. I love hand work, but do a lot of machine work now. Questions? Good Luck!!!

Hi. I am getting back into quilting. I was wondering what kinds of needles you use for hand stitching? Thanks.
@StephanieKitchens4340
@StephanieKitchens4340 3 жыл бұрын
For piecing I use more slender and sharp needles; the fun is having the needle slide through the material and making stitches that will hold the material together. For quilting, I go with quilting needles; Clover and John James are brands that carry needles made in England. For the push/pull kind of quilting I do I have gradually gone down to size 9 or smaller needle. It is easier to hold the needle perpendicular to the fabric. Experiment with different needles until you find the ones you enjoy!
