Helvellyn via Striding Edge in Lake District National Park is simply the best mountain hiking trail in the UK - combining hiking, ridge walking and scrambling with astonishing views. In this cinematic hiking vlog we start the walk in Glenridding and first scale a mountain called Birkhouse Moor (718m). We follow the trail until Hole-in-the-wall, the staircase which marks the start of Striding Edge. We walk along the ridge until the Chimney and then scramble to the summit. It then ends when we descend Swirral Edge, the second arm. This hike was ranked 1st on ITV's Britain's 100 Favourite Walks.
At 950m Helvellyn is the third highest mountain in England . Climbing it is an exhilarating, thrilling experience that I love so much that I've filmed myself doing it three times in different weather conditions: sunny (2019), partly cloudy (2016) and amongst-the-clouds (2017). If you're over 30 you'll feel like Indiana Jones, if you're under 30 you'll feel like Nathan Drake! If you don't know who they are, I feel sorry for you.
THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
- On average, every year one person will die ascending Helvellyn. For this reason, we recommend you summit a nearby 800m+ mountain such as Scafell Pike or Old Man of Coniston before climbing Helvellyn.
- For your first attempt - go in dry, sunny and calm conditions. Carry appropriate gear (waterproof hiking boots, walking poles, distress whistle, at least 2L of water).
- Watch out for the Chimney, a 7m near-vertical descent just after Striding Edge and before the scramble.
- If you've never scrambled before, just take your time and keep 3 points of contact at all times.
- As with all hikes, accidents tend to happen on the descent because your guard is down - but as you're descending on a ridge, take extra care.
- Watch out for the fell runners! Yes, there are nutcases that actually run the route, give them plenty of space!
