Our job as crew is to be there before the balloon gets there, not only to make sure there’s enough space to land, but also so pedestrians know that a hot air balloon will be landing at their location soon. When the pilot is coming in, he’ll throw out a bag with 150 ft of rope in it which is clipped to the basket. It’s then my job to grab that line as soon as I can, and play tug of war with the balloon until it stops. My crew would then run up and put their weight on the basket while my pilot opens the top of the balloon. Occasionally, there are some “rough landings” but they’re actually rare. The clip shown about halfway through the video of such a landing demonstrates the need for worthwhile crew, and doesn’t represent the majority of hot air balloon experiences. If you have the opportunity to crew for a balloon company, it’s a lot of fun, and usually good money for the work you do.
