Loving this! Missed out on Chemistry at school. Went on to study electronics but always felt I had a hole in my understanding when materials and semiconductors came up. Just found this series and it's great. Teaching quality has improved immensely since my day, and there was no Internet either. We studied the few books we could afford, did all the labs and talked a lot.

Plato was a realist (a dualism of idealism and materialism), he thought physical things got their reality from participating in the idealized forms of essences, not physical substances like thales (everything is water) or Aristotle. so a table is a table bc it participates in things hardness, woodness, and tableness. physical things are in the relm of sensible things which can deceive and forms are perfections that are grasped by the intellect. i invite everyone to read actual plato directly as to the history of development of ideas rather then the clifnotes section in a local barnes and nobles.

The law of conservation of mass should technically be the law of conservation of mass-energy. For instance in the combustion of paraffin, the radiant Energy released will cause the mass of the products (CO2 and H20) to be slightly less than the mass of paraffin. However this change is very small that it is often neglected.
