Dear Pastor, appreciate your confirmation on 1Jn1:9 is it adressing believers or unbelievers in its context. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this message!! Will you please help me to better understand “how” we are continually forgiven if it’s by the blood of Christ we are cleansed? In other words it seems that forgiveness happens fully when we put our trust in Christ that he died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day for our justification. In other words, if Christ isn’t dying again, how are new sins held to our account and upon what basis does God forgive us, since Christ isn’t shedding his blood again? I’m desperately trying to understand this, especially with respect to 1Jn. I love how the pastor distinguished between forgiveness and fellowship, or salvation and fellowship. But 1 Jn says if we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. So I’m trying to understand how that happens if it’s the blood of Jesus that cleanses us, how is ongoing forgiveness issued to us by God, and is that contingent upon our confession? Having a hard time articulating this, basically I’m asking if the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin, how is “new” sin charged to us and how and upon what basis is that forgiveness issued? I’m really struggling to understand this. I’m clear that 1 Jn is speaking of fellowship rather than salvation, but how does “re-forgiveness” happen if Christ isn’t dying over and over. I hope whomever is reading this comment will sense the spirit from which I’m asking this. I really am seeking to more clearly understand. This is a struggle for me at the moment. Especially since it seems like according to Colossians 2:13-14 all sins (past, present, and future) have been forgiven and even the basis of our guilt-the law transgressed, was nailed to His cross. I’m clear that there is a difference between fellowship and salvation, I’m having a hard time understanding how ongoing forgiveness happens… unless it cleanses our conscience when we repent and confess it to God? But that is different than what is written in 1Jn. He clearly says “forgives” and “cleanses.” I’m repeating myself so I’ll bring this to an end. God bless you! 🙏 🤲

Hello, I hope this finds you well. You are correct that Jesus Christ's shedding of blood on the cross was sufficient to pay for all of our sins and that it was a one time transaction. This payment is applied to our account once we believe that Jesus has does that for us. This is then what allows us to enter into heaven. There are many passages that talk about us walking in fellowship / abiding with God. Since after we have believed we still have our free will and have the capacity to sin we can stop walking with God. When we sin we are choosing to go away from God and do our own thing. In 1 John 1:9 where it says "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.", the word confess there means to say the same thing as God or another way to put it is to see it as God does. In order for us to re-establish our fellowship with God we must agree with God what we did was wrong and that we see it as he does. This confession talked about here is not for entrance into heaven. As you said, Jesus blood payment already covered that. Think of it on a human level. If someone offends you in some way neither of you can reestablish your fellowship until you both forgive each other. God has already forgiven us of any sin we commit, the act of restoring fellowship is all on our part. God is not going to change his mind about what is sinful, we must be the ones to change, to confess, to see it as he does.
