Just to be clear - yes, wear your seatbelts, but the fatality wasn't caused by a traumatic injury. It was a 74 yo man who suffered a heart attack. A seatbelt wouldn't have saved him.

Possibly stress. I know of people, when flying, their mind is set to being there and only a few cms / inches of material below them is separating them from dropping waaaaay down. The slightest move of the aircraft is setting them into panic mode. A turbulence drop like that will have them anticipating the aircraft smashing well into the ground already.

I was on a flight about ten years ago making my way back from Germany. Made it all the way to 50 ft off the runway in Wichita, KS and then the pilot all of the sudden put the plane is nose up and full power to the engines. We hit a wind shear from an approaching t-storm. We had to divert to Tulsa, OK airport where we waited out the storm. That lasted about two hours and the storms kept building towards Wichita, so we packed back up and flew to Amarillo, TX airport and landed just long enough to fill the fuel tank and then promptly flew on the west side of the T-storms as we made our way back to Wichita. Needless to say that was a bumpy ride all the way and then as we were descending into Wichita, we hit some huge air pockets and the whole plane was thrown all over the place, bucking up and down, sideways, etc. people were thrown around and one flight attendant was limping her way back to her jump seat. The lady next to me (whom I didn't know) dug her nails into my arm as we were bouncing around. Scariest flight of my life and I've made hundreds. I feel for those passengers, it must've been terrifying.

Not killed, died. By heart attack. There are those sensation rides, where people are kept waiting for a drop and eventually let go without warning. I guess it must have felt like that, only worse as it was not a bump in the airway, but a straight gravity pull over 2000m / 6000ft. Even a jump from the Burj Khalifa building in Dubai won't be a match. Watching the chaos around, one could come to the conclusion of the plane having broken up and going down by structural failure. Metal doesn't groan and moan, it snaps and goes.

Same, even though I know how safe it is, and even as an engineer, I can’t help but shake the anxiety when I fly for some reason. Guess it’s the fact that you’re in a cramped tin can roller coaster in the sky. There hasn’t been a major crash in the US in 15+ years and it’s still so rare. Planes are seriously sturdy, their wings can buckle up and down almost 90 degrees from turbulence and they’re good. The plane can easily handle turbulence, but if it drops or move suddenly from it, the people inside can be harmed. Only flights that are easy for me are those less than an hour, like NY to DC I love. They should seriously educate people about turbulence more to make them more aware.

Even when seat belt sign is not on, always wear seatbelts when seated. Pilot do their best to try to avoid obvious areas of turbulence using weather maps. However sometimes these areas of turbulence can be too large to avoid, and there could be pockets of instability in the atmosphere can cause a sudden rapid drop in altitude. I never leave the ground without having my seatbelt on and I never take my seatbelt off to wear at the gate. That’s how you keep busting your head on the overhead baggage and turbulence

The passenger that passed was a 74 yo male. He died from a heart attack caused by a chronic heart condition being exacerbated by stress. So yeah. The judging is in bad taste.

@@sparrrow76Thank you for the info, it really is appreciated, but most of the injuries were still caused by people not wearing their seatbelts. I'd rather be slightly uncomfortable for a few hours than end up with a concussion, you know?

I'm one of those weirdos who actually feel more comfortable with their seatbelt on. In a plane, I especially like always being strapped in, for exactly this reason. What a shame.

The gentleman who passed away most likely had a heart attack. Yes, keep your seatbelts on, but carelessness in that regard was probably not the cause of the death of this passenger. It was more likely to be the cause of the other injuries sustained. It sounds like the pilots were dealing with an extreme and unpredictable situation 😢
