I traveled around the world for years when eventually it lost it’s excitement with seeing enough became enough.
Settled in New Jersey and eventually retired to the west coast (SF bay area) happy to be near my family and content in what America had to offer.

I see both my fathers and mothers names are here. I'm Australian without much knowledge of how we for here. Most of my family look Irish as... I feel like something has been taken. We come from ancient clans. We even had family crests and ancient seats.

Strange to not include a highly influencial family from cork county on here. The Gallery family was banished from clare, went to scottland, came back to conquer Galway [hence the name similarity] and was welcomed back with nobility. We even have a family historian.

COUNTY CORK IRELAND Thanks for sharing your Map of Irish Family Names. [7:04] My family name is located on your map in County Cork. I did not understand the importance of family names to the Irish until I met two men many years ago who were associated with a new partner of mine, surname Allen, in a fund-raising project. While I was in waiting in their office reception room, the two men came out to meet me. They introduced themselves to me, and I introduced myself to them with mutual handshakes. When I pronounced my surname, Coleman, their faces became radiant with big smiles, and one of them replied proudly, "County Cork!". They knew my family genealogy better than I did. As a result of this Irish Family Map, I discovered that the Allen family is also from County Cork. ☘

It's attitudes like that, drip feeding poison into babies so they're filled with hate and resentment that perpetuates wars and genocide. What about the indigenous peoples of Canada and north America, the Irish were complicit in their genocide? Don't blame the English, it was the Normans, ie Norsemen from France that invaded England then parcelled it off, subjugating the locals before moving into Wales and Ireland.

@SonOfViking
@SonOfViking 2 жыл бұрын
Fynn is an alternative spelling for the more usual "Finn", both of which are derived from the Gaelic sept the "O'Fionnaigh" who were primarily based in Sligo though with branches further east. The "y" indicates that his branch were from the ancient territory of Oriel, which is now parts of South Armagh and North East Monaghan in Ulster, so that would tally with him coming from "the north" too.

@SonOfViking
@SonOfViking 2 жыл бұрын
@@catherinedelaney147 Not the same name. "Flynn" derives from the Gaelic "flainn" indicating either ruddy complexion or red hair, and therefore appeared as a cognomen quite independently in several parts of the country, normally to distinguish a family branch from its original sept, which would have used a completely different name in each case. "Fynn" is derived from the Gaelic "fionn", meaning fair of complexion or fair haired, and would have arisen in much the same way, but in fewer areas that we know of. This difference is also reflected in the number of people using these respective surnames today throughout the island - the "Flynns" (whose largest concentration would have been in Munster, not Ulster) far outnumber the "Finns".
