We were taught every conceivable manner in which a helicopter may autorotate, and each and every one was ALWAYS to the ground. Altitude was irrelevant. We did hovering autos, 180° autos, 360° autos, full speed autos - etc. I truly enjoyed "Spot" autos best - we would pick a number on the runway, drop the collective, pull the cyclic back to flare and down we went, repeating this process to a full stop 'land on the number' auto. We had IP's who survived Vietnam and taught us all their tricks. "Vertical Autos" Yes, you can. I did one from 5,000 feet to demonstrate it to a new pilot, all okay and pushed forward at 1,000' to continue on our way. Two tours in Vietnam, 1,955 combat flying hours.

Thank you very much sir! Apologies for the late reply, took a break from YT for a few weeks. I really appreciate your comment as it's very rare to receive a reply from someone who is a real world expert. You would be very much in demand with the DCS chopper groups. This is what I love about this hobby, every so often someone like you comes along and says 'Hey, that's not how it was' and I learn something new. I shall now be practicing them as described and probably crashing a few times until I get it. Have you ever thought about putting some DCS videos or even just narrative videos about the Huey on your channel? Your experience and knowledge are unique to the places and times your younger self inhabited, I and many other DCS players/aviation nerds would love to hear more, it would also be a great record for future generations. I've subscribed to your channel just in case you ever decide to. Thank you again Sir!

If you want to do the same on the gazelle, my best friend is a Gazelle pilot in the french army. He showed me the procedure with the correct speeds and attitudes (especially the flare is way harder than on the huey). If you're interested I can provide the full explained steps so you can make a vid out of it. Keep up the amazing work, you rock!

Do a simulated stuck right pedal all the way to the floor and land. Then do it with a 15kt wind from 45deg off to the right of the nose. That will sort you out. :-) ps - you will need to setup your controls to be able to chop the throttle without taking hands off them.

What I dont get is the following: You do this stuff normally when your engine is dead ho does the collective then work if the engine is dead? Like say an F18 if the engine is dead Moving the throttle wont do anything. Or is it because the collective controls the pitch of the blades even when the engine is down so it effects the heli?

Thank you very much sir! Great question, and you hit the nail on the head with the 2nd answer. The cyclic controls the angle of the disk, while the collective changes the pitch of all of the blades simultaneously. So, you're hurtling towards the earth, engine out, the first instinct is to pull the cyclic back and collective up. However, without the engine to drive the rotor the cyclic slows your speed and the can and the angle of the rotors bite into the air, without power they are affected by drag and slow. Instead, you bottom the collective, push the nose forward, hurtle towards the ground which causes your rotors to maintain their speed or at least lessen the effect of drag. Then just before you drill a hole in the ground you raise the collective, the rotors bite the air, use the collective and pull the cyclic back to settle quickly.

To add on to Laobi's answer, there's a freewheeling mechanism in the rotor hub, such that if the engine power is lost, it'll basically declutch from the rotor and allow it to keep spinning, rather than "engine brake" the rotor to a stop. It's not unlike how in a bicycle, the chain doesn't automatically stop when you stop pedaling.

Just did Autorotation lessons in reality (see below) - I'd advise two things: once you hear the engine quit, drop collective, right pedal, a LOT of aft cyclic. Should be pulled more than usual to not let the nose sink (tl:dr physics makes the blades slow down if the nose dips and vice versa). It's better to slow down than to let the nose dip... you can even autorotate straight down as long as you speed back up to 60 knots before reaching the ground. Flare just like you did in the vid, but pull very sharply aft-cyclic at the very end to stop your ground speed altogether... then rapidly forward-cyclic to level out. Nice vids, you've saved me having to make my own DCS Huey tutorials! kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5_YiISjgpqrjq8

zzodr We do one or two but the benefit is minimal as you have already done the hard work and the wear on the helicopter by multiple students is high

For the record, "penultimate" means "next to last". I didn't know that either, until I heard it discussed on a podcast. Was that intentional?
@Laobi
@Laobi 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you sir! This one was meant to be the penultimate and the landing one following was meant to be last, then a bunch of fuckers asked me to cover sling loading which I had very little knowledge and no skill in, so I practiced my little arse off slingloading and cobbled my weakest tutorial together on it.

You can do Autorotation at or above 500 feet without any problem.
@gordslater
@gordslater 6 жыл бұрын
and a point to note at very low levels (IGE hover or ultra-low-level NOE at moderate speeds, say 60kts/20ft) is that the Huey has high-inertia blades (=they are heavy) so a sudden engine failure at 10-30 feet at normal rotor RPM can often mean a surviveable but very hard landing. You use the stored energy to cushion the impact. This isn't autorotation at all, it's technically called the FASN-YTL procedure: Fuck - A Strange Noise? Yank That Lever.

why so much trouble when you just can pull foward the cyclic and wait?
@gordslater
@gordslater 6 жыл бұрын
Bottoming collective reduces pitch, reducing blade drag and establishes upward airflow through the disk =autoration state faster to allow Rotor RPM to be maintained in the green. Beware that violent lowering and pushing forward can cause mast bumping and rotor separation depending on maneuvering state at start of failure - slick and smooth is the way.

My autorotations are with 0 forward speed. I don't flare but pull the collective up and get a hover at around 5 ft. Then set it down gently.

Thank you sir. Excellent technique, but for chopper scrubs like me autorotations are profanity laden, diarrhoea inducing journeys where if the chopper and crew are in one piece at the end I consider it a major victory

the moment you lose engine pull collective up to nose up instead of using cyclic and then once you have a flair angle drop the collective like you spilled the beans when you caught your parents creating a sibling
@kittuete
@kittuete 6 жыл бұрын
this is one method but your way is better if you dont have enough rpm to do the collective pull, guess we learned different in different situations
