Since day one I've always been open with people. Estate sales, pallet stores, garage sales, all of it. My wife was always nervous at first but it has worked. In less than 6 months since we started and already have made a few decent connections. Most people are ok with it. I've found if you let people know what you do (especially in the industry like estates, local store owners) they understand you need to make money as well. Thanks Pete 👍

I agree with you. 100% honesty. If they jack up prices after I tell them, that's someone I would rather not have a business relationship with. It weeds out the shady people, and you also sleep very well at night!
@russell59205 жыл бұрын
You need to know WHEN and WHO to tell. Telling the random guy running a garage sale more than likely isn't going to help you. In fact he might just refuse to sell to you, not haggle, or even raise prices. Now, telling someone that you know works in retail or has constant access to inventory of some sort, can be a career long contact.

I do agree while being honest is good as a general rule, it's also best to evaluate each situation individually. When really is key there. You don't want to roll right up and broadcast it. Make friends first, get some prices, buy some stuff and then drop the "bomb" if appropriate.

I tell all my friends what I do and it hasn’t gotten to the point of me buying from them, but I have friends tell me all the time about rummage sales and the like that I may never have found out about on my own. I also have friends dropping off boxes and packing materials at my house when needed. I’m a new reseller after retiring from another field for 30+ years so it’s a start. The next move is to buy business cards to hand out to estate sale and flea market vendors to build those relationships for buying referrals.

In bigger cities, I wouldn't mind sharing, but in smaller locations with like 1 goodwill or two, I wouldn't. The connections or bulk items purchasing will most likely be from other resellers. Someone who doesn't want to list and take pictures and just want to move/get rid of inventory quickly would be a good connection to talk with. vice versa.

Pete - I recently came across your videos on KZbin & I must say - I really appreciate your work. I’ve been a reseller/hustler for about 4.5yrs - however, I mainly deal with cell phones (90%) & some other electronics such as laptops/tablets (10%). When it comes to resourcing (acquiring inventory): I don’t have a store & as a matter of fact I don’t even have a business card. I do tell everyone that I buy/sell/trade mobile devices. 80% of all the mobile devices that I buy come from repeat business & the other 20% I convert via CL/OfferUp/FB Market place. All those converted customers via those platforms I let know what I do & tell them to contact me if they ever get more devices they’d like to sell me. I cannot stress the importance of building up those long term relationships that will continue to bring you inventory & you’ll get the opportunity to truly meet some amazing people. On a different note, I recently started looking into ways to add to my income stream & that’s how I came across your videos. A lot of what you talk about & show in your videos, I can 100% relate to only that my business is more focused on specific items & yours is much more diversified. Would love to connect with you - it seems like you get a lot of different items & some of those items (mobile devices for now) I can potentially buy from you in bulk. Again, appreciate your work - wishing you all the best either way.

I agree with you completely. I used to pretend I wanted something for me instead of pretend I was a reseller for fear of paying higher prices or some sort of resentment but I can’t tell how many times me being honest led to them coming to me in the future with something else they wanted to sell. The day I decided to never pretend I wasn’t a reseller was this time at a yard sale. Middle aged couple that after years of being empty nesters had decided to get rid of their kid’s old stuff. Lots of good stuff. The husbands see how much I’m buying and he goes “you must collect old toys” and I almost just agreed with his assumption but something told me to be honest. I said “I do love this stuff but I sell online for a living full time so I’ll resell this stuff” He looks at his wife and goes “you should see the building out back. We haven’t scratched the surface,”. Long story short me being honest got me into that building and I’m found GI Joes, Thundercats, Star Wars toys, etc and three boxes FULL of NES and SNES games. So yeah, be honest, network, give them your card. You’ll never be able to build contacts or a network by lying. Something else: I find that once people understand you have to have some “meat on the bone” when you buy something you may even be able to get BETTER deals

They wanted their guitar to "go to a good home." So I stay quiet on the flipping part 🙂

Pete, you are so honest and open with your thoughts, ideas and activities. This is why I have followed you faithfully for so long. I don't mind telling people I resell, except at yard sales because some people get offended about what you are doing with their stuff and then won't make you a deal. It doesn't make sense because they don't want it anymore. But people are people. Sometimes I will tell them I "collect" and they can let me know if they have other things I might want to collect. :-)

Something to consider as well...... Reselling requires some of the same skills a successful salesperson needs to have. One needs to be outgoing and also be comfortable doing what feels like cold calling. These traits do not come easily to many people. The introvert or someone who is basically shy would find it very difficult to be outgoing in situations where you meet new people and must extend yourself.
@dianewallace56275 жыл бұрын
In my experience as soon as you mention that you resell people seem to get really suspicious and offensive like you are trying to take their things and make money on them. Crazy but I find that at yard sales and thrift stores a lot. So I keep my mouth shut and try to make a deal as a person to person and not as a reseller. Love what I do and not ashamed of it AT ALL but I get more cooperation from a person if they just think I am buying for myself. JMHO

As a reseller your priority is to find good high profitable stuff to resell, well this is hard to do if you are solely relying on only thrift stores and garage sales.

One will actually show me items hoping I'll want them, the other had a meeting and decided if I'm interested in something the price is doubled. I'm serious, they actually told me that. Everytime I let some one know that I am reselling what I am picking up. They start jacking the price up on me. There are some you can tell and they are fine with it. Others think you are trying to get one over on them. Maybe it is just the area that I am in, but they seem like you are trying to rip them off. All of the thrift store, and 2nd had shops are now trying to get eBay prices for stuff so there really isn't any meat left on the bones anymore. I have been moving more and more in to the high end tool market. (Snap On, Mac, Matco, Cornwell) It costs a bit more upfront, but they always make a good profit, and never have to worry about warranty cause people will buy those brands broken for a cheap price and get them warrantied out on the tool trucks.

Ruben R maybe, or maybe they understand you have to make money so you can only pay so much. But you may not even get a chance to pay for anything else if you don’t network by being upfront and who’s what you’ll miss. I would much rather pay more in the future for quality items then not have ever been contacted about those items at all. I’ll still be making money. If I’m not able to be contacted by being honest with them and networking and making new connections than I don’t make anymore money at all even if my margins are not as good .

Garland Ragland Doing this long enough most people will try to jack you up for the fast dollar than sell you stuff in the future, Sad but not told on youtube truth.
@garlandragland5 жыл бұрын
@@nickk4010 I've been doing it for 6 or 7 years now and the costs of not being honest greatly outweigh the benefits. But if you're smart, you'll have an agreed upon price before you get to the point of them asking or revealing. After that, if they raise their prices in the future, be happy you were able to stay in touch with them at all. I keep a set of spreadsheets, one with buyers, what they like and their contact information and another of sellers. This one has what kinds of things I have brought from them in the past, a ranking system based on quality and prices and their contact information. That second list is now over 500 people deep and I'm going to say, conservatively, that had I pretended I didn't run a resell business it would be less than 100 people.

Not true. I find they work with me hoping to sell me quantity. A lot of folks are hoarding quality stuff they need to get rid of.
@garlandragland5 жыл бұрын
@@rockrollresale2668 Exactly. A lot of people are so happy when they find out that I do that for a living and they realize I might be the golden goose they've been looking for... The only problem is sometimes it's junk and sometimes they want me to take it all, lol. But a lot of times there's really good stuff and sometimes, like at a yard sale, it's not being put out for sale. Me being honest gets me into the building, attic, etc. where they have it. One thing I've constantly seen is people not wanting to put out their good stuff at yard sales because they don't want yard sale prices because it's worth more, but me being honest gets them to show me that stuff and make them fair offers. Also, like I was saying to someone else, I've actually gotten better deals by saying I was a reseller. For example, just last week I was at a yard sale and this woman had a set of Pyrex primary color bowls. In the condition they were in, I could get about $70 for them all said and done. She wanted $50. I offered $30 but she wouldn't take it. She was like "Oh, they're a great set, though. They'd look great in your home!" So I just leveled with her and told her I was a reseller so in order for me to make a worthwhile profit I couldn't pay $50. I ended up getting them for $35 after that and she told me she had more stuff in her attic. I gave her my card, got her info and we'll see what happens. All because I was honest.

This is great advice on how to scale. For a one person business you have consider a couple of things. Where are your bottlenecks? We know listing is THE BOTTLENECK so sourcing at the pace of listing is a good flow. The balance could be to add more people to list or source high end items. Pete offers great advice and the beauty of that is you can always say "No" to the deal depending on the amount. But saying "No" too many times will lead the source somewhere else. Start small and build up.

From a general business standpoint, networking is mandatory. The more connections you have, the more opportunities will be presented to you. It's up to you to determine which opportunities are most worth developing versus which ones are not. That's really the whole game as everyone only has so much time - so how do you choose. The best businesses usually focus in on the best opportunities while letting lesser opportunities go. Networking has to be mutually beneficial or else it's a waste of someone's time. The best relationships involve trust, authenticity and equal value obtained on each side. You're better off building a network slowly and correctly rather than going too big, too fast and letting business connections down. Share what you do, but don't overshare too early is what I would suggest in any business. That way, when the big opportunity does come along, you can be in a place to fully build on it so both sides can gain long term.

Flaunt your business! These sellers don't care! They wouldn't be selling to you in the first place if they thought they could do it better themselves!

I LOVE reading all the people that admit they lie or deceive. Makes people like us STAND OUT more and have people give us stuff and makes sourcing SO MUCH easier, because they know who we are from how we presented our selves from jump street. Its NOT "WHO and WHEN". Its ALWAYS. ALWAYS be who you are and the more you say it the more matter of fact it comes out. Some of you bust this guys balls or try to counter his success with negative nancy thumb sucking whining. BLOWS my mind. Glad you're killing it buddy. Have learned a TON from you! Thanks for posting these videos!

I was scared to share what I do, especially at garage sales because they might increase the price of stuff, but I think I'm going to try this new approach. Thanks pete

I will give you my honest opinion Pete. I have tried this many times here in Nebraska with no luck. Everytime I do, I hear this well your a reseller, well I checked eBay and my items are worth at least that amount. I try to talk to them, about how it cost me money for shipping, fees, shipping materials, and etc. Their answer is well if you don't want to pay full price, than we will just sell it on eBay. So please help by letting me know am I just dealing with the wrong people, or maybe is it the way I am dealing with my approach.
@marvinpuerto40065 жыл бұрын
TheTwoTravelers idk but I feel like this happens more often then okay I’ll sale it to you for cheaper once they know about ebay having it for a higher price they want nothing less you tell them about how there’s scammers you deal with about fees materials etc they just see you trying to make money off of they’re potential coin

Awesome video Pete and you're right. I'm usually pretty upfront with people i buy from that i'm a re-seller but i'm still hesitant to tell other re-sellers that i'm a re-seller. My store is just not big enough and i'm just too scared to create more competition.

I usually tell I collect antiques and vintage equipment. After that if we start a conversation it usually gets to talking about eBaying. I find that people love the thought of money from eBay but find it too tedious. I don't think everyone at the flea market needs to know, but sometimes they have asked me if I collect certain things because I'm asking about an item. I am not ashamed but like a lot of the comments say, people know you're making money off of it and human nature is to be jealous of that jack up the price. Most of my friends and family know what I do and think it's cool. I do it part time for additional income.

I don’t tell everyone what I do...if I meet someone in a thrift store randomly I might tell them but if I’m at a garage sale I don’t advertise it because it might kill the deal or make them raise their price some people are just haters so u gotta be careful

YES! i see these resellers going to garage sales lying to the sellers pretending its for personal so they can drive the price down. or if its womens products he gives it to his wife so she can try to haggle a better price vs him being a man wanting to buy womens clothes

I see a lot of comments saying the price goes up when you tell them what you do, if your a serious buyer you should know your numbers and stick to them, a serious long term source will treat you right, if someone jacks up the price simply because your a reseller they were never a long term source anyway, point is i would rather have 1 very good source on a regular basis than loose a few petty deals! Pete - you are the man all men should want to be! My friends and I just Love you. My friends an I are still trying to get up enough nerve to come into your store and meet you. This might sound kind of funny but people are like you sell soda cans on eBay? I said yes I sell vintage soda cans 70's 80's and 90's. What do you do? Why? People don't understand why I sell soda cans they never understand why in the wildest dream that soda cans would sell.. never thought I keep it easy to throw away. Yes, I sell them around the US and the world. Believe or not, collectors fall in love with cans because of the one of a kind item that brings back memories as a child or maybe where they used to work at a job long time ago. I make tons of money on it. I buy cheap to sell for a pretty good profit. It may take time to get to the top what people seeing on eBay. I build myself a good base and it just sells. Anyone can do it but as Pete says why are people are afraid? Do it and show people who the heck you are. You'll feel it. Trust me. Pete always has good intention to point out what good for the business. Thank you!!

NETWORKING! Its all so true and important. I love your channel, I love your work. Thank you for all you do for us. I would really like to hear more about your life story, maybe its out there and I have not found it. My wife is not an native born American, she came here in her early 20's, so I may have a different perspective than some. I think some Americans don't even see the opportunity that is all around them, its like they are completely blind to it or just take it for granted. Reselling has allowed me to be self employed for 7 years this coming October, the best 7 years of my life. I am surrounded my more opportunity to earn money than I have time for. If I spend the time to watch something i WANT TO BE LEARNING! I want to lean something new everyday, your channel is often that vehicle. Its almost as if I am watching a friend.

Pete, I flip Part time, Im semi Retired and started flipping, People I work with know I flip stuff and I actually started getting some transactions from coworkers, But what I have started doing was spending Fridays doing Garage sales, So far those have been a bust, Not seeing much but Clothing and odds and end stuff that are basically not worth the time to buy or flip not a big market for any of it. Now I have attended some estate sales that I think will bring a couple good flips, Antique Tube Radios and some other Vintage items that I think are highly collectable. My question is when your Garage selling do you see better items at the start of the season or in multi neighborhood garage sales? We have a couple of those coming up in June as weather breaks better.

i sell office , home and high end furniture, and electronics, my friends know but dont take advantage, one friend called me about a raggedy couch on the sidewalk and i had to explain thats NOT what i do. I find i have accidental repeat customers but have yet to find " source" that can provide me with inventory on a regular basis, been watching for years and finally jumped on EBAY and made 1200 the first day selling items ive been trying to get rid of for years after being primariy on craigslist for about 4-5 years

hes right you cant be in a hundred places at once ,the more people know the easier it is to source , connections are everything
