Another thought as to why the rod is so close to the river, is that for anyone who's ever struggled with addiction or sin, that addiction is never truly gone from view... It's always there, and the triggers that you consciously CHOOSE to decline are never truly gone... The difference between the life you have now and the life you had once can at times seem very minute... And what keeps you from making that tiny back sliding choice, is the Saviour, or in this case, the iron rod.

I agree and also other disabilities and challenges. Challenges within as well as outside directly to oneself. Also tides rise which could symbolize those triggers or other tempting rationalizing thought and minute actions and many other things such as other people’s actions that can cause grief or a stumble vice versa to others.

Btw. Ty for sharing that insight.

No worries! Another insight that came up in gospel doctrine today, is that the small distance works both ways i.e. the difference between the covenant path and a life of sin is only small, but conversely the distance between a life of sin and the covenant path is a LOT smaller than one "in the river or on the banks" might think... It might feel far, but it's really not, and that's a good AND bad thing depending on which direction you're facing..

@@Homeandhopewithrachel I like this. It’s profound olay vy une irte By Elder Kevin W. Pearson Of the Seventy Lehi's vision of the tree of life is a powerful parable on enduring to the end. Shortly before President Heber J. Grant passed away, one of the Brethren visited his home. Before he left, President Grant prayed, "O God, bless me that I shall not lose my testimony and keep faithful to the end!"1 After nearly 27 years as President of the Church, this was his fervent prayer. His example is a striking reminder that no one, at any age, is immune from Satan's influence. Two of Satan's most powerful tools are distraction and deception.

I read chapter 8 yesterday in the temple while fulfilling my ordinance shift. I was impressed how what Lehi described is a microcosm of what the world is today. I see good members of he church that are led away by the mists and the great building and all the distractions that Satan puts in our way. I am grateful that our Father and His Son gave us the Bok of Mormon to help us in our test in mortality.

Wow. I love your insights! And I love the way you introduced it as a question first, to stimulate our minds to consider “why?” Just beautiful to have that raison of why the iron rod is so close to the river, and what mercy is shown in that. And the alignment of the way, the truth and the life! Thank you 🙏🏻😌

I live beside the Chattahoochee rivier, and sometimes it's tricky to exit the water. You don't always have easy, sandy banks to navigate. Sometimes the river has carved a 90 degree earthen wall on either side of you! It's fantastic to imagine the Rod of Iron as something to reach for and cling too. Something to pull yourself out with and keep your footing through the muck.

Bro. Griffin, What a great explanation of Lehi's Tree Of Life vision, I have read it and heard it many times and mostly the explanation and what I get reading is hold onto the rod don't fall off and if you do it's over.
@sheisleeaddams11 ай бұрын
Thank you Bro Griffin for a marvelous presentation, there were so many beautiful insights as always. I love what you said about the placement of the Iron Rod. I never thought about it that way before. I was also thinking how it doesn't take much for one to go from one side to the next. One could be on the path holding onto the iron rod in one season, and could end up in the river of filth in another. In some instances I think an individual will have more appreciation and understanding of the Iron rod and the straight path, only after spending some time in the river of filth. For the individuals in the river of filth, I think being able to see the Iron rod and the path leading to the tree of life is hope. It's actually quite smart how everything was positioned accordingly for a purpose. This positioning, I believe, would've also sent a message to those in the river, that the Iron rod is within reach and they too can be on the path. For individuals on the path holding onto the Iron rod, it should hopefully be a reminder not to judge the people in the river, they could easily end up there themselves one day. I think in every step it would be important to hold on tighter and keep working. I don't think individuals should be complacent or maybe think they have the upper hand because of where they are at that particular point of the journey. I wonder if Lehi knew how important this vision was going to be at the time. I think this vision is also for those on the other side too. This is just my take on it. God bless everyone at SC and God bless you Bro Griffin for being a wonderful teacher ❤.
