In 1969 my father ordered a new Chevy Kingswood Estate station wagon. Hidden headlights, woodgrain sides, roof rack, air, power windows, steering, brakes, air, 390 hp 427 with turbo 400. I took my test for driver license in that car. With 3.00 gears and serious weight it wasn't too impressive off the line, but at a 30 mph roll matting the gas pedal, it would downshift to low, the front would come up like a motorboat, and it would haul serious ass!

I bought a '69 Caprice 2 door HT, 350/300, 4 speed, hide away headlights, buckets and console, AM/stereo tape, A/C, hideaways, posi, vinyl roof, "wood wheel", AIR system (California car from new) from the original owner. He wanted a '70, but they weren't going to offer buckets, so the dealer found one that was ordered and the guy cancelled so he grabbed it. I kept it for 5 years and sold it to a body shop guy (it was silver and needed a repaint). It rode great and I have only seen a very small handful of 4 speed Caprices over the years, all with 350/300 engines. MY favorite muscle cars: 1: Studebaker Avanti with the R-2 or R-3 engine. 2: '67 Grand Prix convert with 421 HO and 4 speed. 3: 70 Superbird hemi or not. 4: '73 DeThomaso Pantera and 5: Any Chrysler 300 letter car, especially with the long ram dual quads. They were the bankers hot rods. That car is going to be a challenge to fix, but will be worth it if you do it to keep. A lot of guys get in way over their heads and end up selling it for a loss because the old lady is tired of it sitting in the yard, never being completed. I bought a lot of cars like that in Phoenix and doing A/C was up on the roof and could see all the yards around and found many an abandoned project car and waved some cash in front of the wife and ended up getting a phone call a few days later. I had a friend with a junk yard and we would keep all of our personal stuff in a fenced in area. Keep us posted on your progress.

My dad begged him every year to sell it to him and he always said he was going to fix it up until one day the convertible was gone and my dad found out he sold it to someone else in another state. My dad found out the reason he didn't sell it to him was he finally figured out he wasn't going to ever fix it up and didn't want my dad to get it and fix it because it would have 'shamed him'. My dad was pissed at him until he passed.

Love the stories that go with them as long as they are telling you the truth! That car was a testament to the point that if you wanted a ride that was different than what they had all you had to do is order what you wanted regardless of what they offered you would just order it and poof . You have a great car that you wanted for what it was and wanted it to have. Didn't want flashy SS get this and sleeper your way to pay day on Friday and Saturday night.

Excellent comeup!!! The hideaway lights are the best features on that 69. The 68 also had this has a rare option.

What a knockout find. Incredible car in every respect imaginable. Whenever I see a car like this with window sticker filled all the way up with options, I always wonder if it could have been a dealer demonstrator. As cheap as the concealed headlights were, it's surprising that so few people ordered them
@DezzysSpeedShop Жыл бұрын
The thing is, most people bought the Impala and you couldn’t get hideaways with those. You definitely didn’t order your luxury car with a four-speed, extra cost heavy duty suspension, 3.31 posi, power windows, air-conditioning, etc..
@urbanurchin5930 Жыл бұрын
@mr,goodpliers6988.....Tim, do you think that the reason why so few concealed headlights were ordered - was the fact that they tended to have a lot of functionality issues ?? I don't know about GM vehicles - but I seem to remember that the Fords / Mercurys' had a lot of problems.......

There is a book I have called “Caprice 1965-1976” that has an article titled “The Caprice That $22.15 Built” regarding the special purpose suspension your car is equipped with. Its a great article focusing on the rear sway bar and how the handling is affected and the road test car is a 427 Caprice. If you can’t find it anywhere hit me up for some pics of it.

Unfortunately there are no production numbers for 4-speed manuals. There's no breakdown by body style or drivetrain options. The LS-1 was the base big block. Most '69's had the 327. But it is a rare bird with that 4 speed. They did sell a ton of '69 Caprices.

Wow! I had a similar 68 from Texas (heater/radio delete, vinyl top) purchased from an insurance co after it was heavily rear ended. Waited until I found a totaled car front end damage same color, clipped and cut/welded across floor etc. Only had to paint floor, rockers and A pillar under the vinyl top. After some usage getting under carrage dirty, unable to tell if cut in half. Brand new "LENCO" spot welder was a great help. The ultimate sleeper except for the 15 inch slotted wheel and the 427 emblem. Wish I had it back.

Love this vid. I'm a native Washingtonian, myself. I recognize those stretches of road on I-90 and the location of where you got the car in Spokane County. I'm guessing you're maybe a half hour to an hour north or south of Seattle. I'm in Bremerton which is an hour ferry ride from Seattle. I had a white '69 Impala Custom Coupe with a 350/TH350, power steering but no other comfort options. I enjoyed it for 4 years. Then just under a year after I sold it, I saved up more money on top of what I pocketed for that Impala and got me a red/red '64 Impala SS coupe. It has a 327 w/powerglide trans., power steering and no other comfort options as well. I swapped out the 250-horse 327 for a 330-horse 327 remanufactured in Arizona. My long-term goal was accomplished, starting with a '69 and going to a '64 with either a 409 or a 327/300-horse. And out of top favorite classic muscle cars of all-time, I'd say 3 out of 5 of mine are Chevys including the '66 Chevelle SS 396. '66 is also my favorite year of the GTO. Anyway, that '69 Caprice is also a real find. Best of luck getting it fixed up to run again. I plan on getting around to other classic car shows in some other parts of Western Washington. I hope to see your Caprice out & about sometime. And it's every bit just as cool without the Chevy logo in the center of the grills as it is with it. I do find it intriguing that without the logo, I could tell it was a full-size '69 Chevy from several hundred feet away, not until it's really close up. So, that Caprice would've been easy for me to get mixed up with perhaps a '69-70 Chrysler Imperial from far away, then close up reveals what it really is.

Dark burgundy paint. #3. 1969 Z28 Camaro hidden headlight with the 2..4 barrel set up, and 4 wheel disc brakes. #4. 1970 A6 Roadrunner 440 ..6 pack 4 speed. #5.1970 LS-6 Chevelle SS 4 speed with 4:10 gears. Bicentennial gold paint. Only one was ever built. #6 1969 ZL1 Corvette 427 all aluminum engine. Only 2 were built by GM, only 1 is still known to exist. #7 1966 Cobra Super Snake. Carroll Shelby built 2 Super Snakes. Only 1 is still rolling. #8 1971 Hemi Cuda 4 speed. Only 11 convertibles were produced, only 7 had 4 speed transmissions. #9 1965 Corvette 396 ci. 425 horsepower, they revved past 6,500 rpm. They also blew up easy. #10. 1970 Dodge Daytona 426 Hemi. Only 519 were built.
