Mars is the Roman version of Ares. Because Romans based their whole culture on the Greeks, in a process called Hellinisation, they re-told all the greek myths for Mars and the two gods became indistinguishable. The difference was that wherever ancient Greeks mention him in mythology, he is ridiculed and despite his physican prowess as a soldier he is depicted as a brute not worthy of respect. This shows that they understood that war corresponds to the basest nature of man. Romans on the other hand had him on a pedestal.
