1 Small Diesel Fueling Mistake Could Cost You Thousands (Diesel Exhaust Fluid Contamination) 🔧

This one simple mistake could send your truck to the scrapyard or drain your banking account. Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is corrosive and harmful to several metals. This will cause severe damage to a diesel truck fuel system and turn your diesel fuel into a wrecking ball through your engine! It is best to not start the engine and drain the fuel tank immediately. If you were not able to do that, early symptoms of DEF in your fuel include hard starting, rough idle and smoking exhaust, and a DEF-contaminated engine may not start at all. Yikes! The recommended repair is to replace the entire fuel system, from the tank to injectors. As you can probably tell, this is not a small job. There have been reports of Ford dealerships quoting between $12,000 and $20,000 to replace a DEF contaminated fuel system. For an even older truck, the cost of a DEF repair could easily be more than the value of the vehicle.
Let's hear your DEF contamination stories in the comments below.

I never owned a diesel before fall of 2018 when I went looking for a diesel to pull a 10,000 + cargo (13,000 +/-) fifth wheel. I didn't want to struggle up hills so decided I definitely needed to go diesel. I researched and researched and talked to diesel owners and decided on a few things, I didn't want anything that took DEF, or anything that had a DPF or overly aggressive EGR, and noted 2006 was the cutoff. I also didn't want a 4x4 because it's rarely needed, added expense and costs MPG. One more consideration was I didn't want a truck that had been molested in anyway. I ended up finding a well maintained 2006 Duramax 6.6 (LBZ w/LLY tune) with some surface rust on the frame and needing some minor repairs and TLC. The truck has 125K on the clock and I'm putting some work into it but at 61 I'm hoping it will last me the rest of my life, I would rather put money into this older truck than buy anything 2007 or newer. The only other diesel I would have considered would have been a 7.3 Powerstroke but those are getting harder and harder to find as well.

I refuse to purchase a new diesel truck because of the ‘pigpiss ‘ DEF’. The input port should be on the other side of the truck.
@buckhorncortez
@buckhorncortez 5 жыл бұрын
Let's see,..the fuel cap is green...the DEF cap is blue...the green cap is 2x the size of the blue one...and the openings are different sizes...I suppose if you;re blind and terminally stupid you could confuse the two. In that case, I don't think putting the DEF on the opposite side of the truck would do anything at all. Maybe if the DEF cap was on Mars and you had to go to a completely different planet that might solve the confusion.

I literally just did this last week. Got Diesel the day before but he DEF pumps were occupied. The next day after work I stop and gas station on the way home. Since I wasn't getting Diesel and only putting DEF in I left my truck running. While I was putting my credit in I was also on the phone with BASS PRO where they lied to me about work they did on my boat. I was upset and distracted. Ended up putting two and half gallons of DEF into running truck before I realized what I was doing. Shortly later it errored out with "water in fuel". Had truck towed to Chevy dealership. (only 4500 miles on it) I about crapped my pants when quote came back at $16,000. That does not include engine. $5500 parts and 64 hours labor. Here is where my luck turned. Turns out I wasn't cheap when I bought my Comprehensive Policy and ended up being covered by my policy.

Mixing diesel and DEF makes a very confused concoction.... The diesel naturally wants to protect and lubricate everything. The DEF, being derived from fertilizer (urea) naturally wants to rust and curode most things it comes in contact with.... We use diesel on all our fertilizer equipment after a good steam cleaning at the end of the season... Takes about 4 gallons to coat everything that fertlizer comes in contact with. Still amazes me that some one though urea would work in an exhaust system.... Curodes bridges, overpasses, even the trucks it's used on... (Hence, why exhaust systems for DEF are all stainless) But hey, what would I know about what fertilizer will do to metal?? I've only used it for 50 years....

I almost threw up when I dumped 3 gallons into my fuel tank two weeks ago. I had to start it for just about 5 seconds so I could put it in neutral and start it down hill to roll in front of my work shop. Well I dropped the full tank of fuel ( ouch $120 worth) and drained it. Washed it out with garden hose real good. The pickup pump and lines and fuel filter on the tank. Installed it and added 3 gal of power service and a gallon of Power service 911. Mixed with 5 gal of fresh fuel. Drove it for a while then added 5 more gallons. Drove it 230 miles then added a full tank. Kept adding Power Service 1 gal per full fuel tank. Drove it another 300 miles then changed both fuel filters. Cut them open and let them dry for a few days. Not one spec of crystal any where on any of either filter. I guess I lucked out. On a side note I did it twice before on my 2011 6.7. That was at 45k miles..Only a qt or so. Just drained the first filter every few miles then changed the filters out while adding lot's of power service for a while. Traded it in at 165k and still running smooth. No issues there. On a side note. Why didn't I just call Ford to come and tow it while it was just in the tank and I hadn't started it at all? Had too many important things to be done the next day and 1 week after and another 1 week after and another 1 week after. I went for it. At that point I didn't care what happed to the truck. Either it was going to run and do that all or frig it. I now have a locking gas cap that should help.

A kid put gasoline put in my Duramax a couple years back at a local full-service station. Luckily for them, I shut it down the second my engine, "coughed", so there was no damage to the system. But it did cost the station $150.00 for towing, $580.00 to drain and clean the system, plus a new filter, another 36 gallons of fuel, and I talked the owner into two additional fill-ups for my inconvenience. The kid got fired for being an idiot. P.S. My Duramax was bought brand new in 2003, and has 93,000 miles on it. Living in N.Y., rust is a problem, so I had it painted, and restored, "body off" a couple of years back. Replaced some of the running gear, all of the lines, the exhaust, etc. I'm 68, so I plan on driving it into my grave!! None of that DEF crap for me.

LOL "full service." I remember the gas stations in Canada were all that way in the 70's and 80's. They must have thought people were too stupid to pump their own fuel. Ok some people are, but this is a simple enough task that anyone can make the mistake, and the full service station people are certainly not going to be less prone to these mistakes of habit, since they do this even more than anyone else.

Great video! BUT, too late for me, as a couple of weeks ago, I added a very small amount of DEF to my fuel tank on my 2018 F250 6.7TD. I made this lame-brain mistake at a fuel station that sells DEF at the pumps. Just not paying attention, I inserted the nozzle into my diesel fuel inlet-which I had just finished filling completely full. I had pumped in maybe a quart of DEF when I realized my mistake and immediately stopped (some of it had splashed out due to the tank being full). I then proceeded to fill my DEF tank. Not knowing how serious this could be, I started my truck and drove home-about 10 miles. By the time I arrived home, my “water in fuel” warning was on. I immediately drained the fuel/water separator under the truck-did that a couple of times. Then, I replaced the water separator filter, and the engine mounted filter (had those two items in my shop). For the next few days, I continued to drain fuel from underneath my truck, until I got down to about a 1/2 tank of fuel. Then, I refilled my truck. I’ve driven many miles in the past couple of weeks, without any issues. Truck starts fast, runs smooth, no further WIF alerts, nothing. So here is my concern-do I have a ticking timebomb that could go off at an point in time? Is there anything I should be doing at this point? My local Ford dealer’s service manager said they see several trucks every year that have this same thing happen, and his recommendation was to continue to drive it, but to know that trouble could still be in my future. One last thing, we use our truck to tow our fifth wheel, and we got several trips on the calendar for this spring, beginning in March. One is about 800 miles away, in April. So, what advice would you give me around “next steps”?? Also, what about the traveling with the fifth wheel? I just saw your KZbin site and subscribed to it-hopefully I’ll still have this truck for a good long while-we love it! Thanks very much!

Happy 4th of July 🇺🇸 everyone! Question: Do new Fords have issues with the fuel system contamination ?? Brother-in-law bought a brand new F350 back 2019. 7-4-2021: The truck has 38K miles and he had issues with the fuel system. Ford claims he has a contaminated fuel system due to “DEF in the gas tank” ??? He swears he has never mixed fuels. I saw the samples of fuel. It’s not crystallized or cloudy, if anything it looks like oil in the fuel. Ford is saying it’s a $13K job to fix (obviously not covered under warranty). He’s not the only person I know that was given the same solution by Ford. Is this some defect with Ford? Is there a way DEF can mix with diesel somewhere in the fuel system similar to how the EGR-coolers fail and allow coolant into the exhaust? Any advise would be greatly appreciated! I’d hate for other to cough up $13k for something Ford should be responsible for.

I always liked my old 6.5 mechanical injected Chevy. Burned 5 gallons used cooking oil once due to station being out of diesel fuel. 10 gallons gasoline by accident topped off with diesel and quart of transmission fluid. Never bothered it. Tuff engine. These newer engines cannot take the abuse.

Drained seperator 4 more times over next 3 days of heavy driving. Added another bottle of 911. Ran tank and changed fuel filters. Ran seafoam through intake. Not one issue. I dont recommend doin it but if it happens... it doesnt have to be the end.

I didnt know that I shouldnt start the engine, though. I moved the car a few mteres. Workshop guys drained the tank. The following day I changed the fuel filter. Dont see any damage yet but reported situation to the insurance company. I lost nerves on that but hope it all gonna be all right. They really should put a large mark on the bottles and pumps with a clear sign that it´s super dangerous to the engine, if one does a mistake. Mine is an 04 dodge with a common rail system. I worked on those from 95 from the injection pump period starting on engines made in the 60s that were still around to the 2014 def emmision systems. When I found out the exhaust gas recirculation set up was going on them in 2001 then the 07 and 10 emmision were comming , being the problems they caused with gas engines and the engineers that acknowledged that a loss of 20 % of the fuel economy was a guarantee due to that with reduced engine life. At the time they had the technology for it but the oils were not up to par they said for commercial purposes. I got mine in 04 when the common rail set up came available on the 5.9 which was similar to the set up on the N14 and I liked that set up.😁

Doug Harding why are you using oz and liters? If you but 4 oz to 26 gals or 120 ml to 100 liters of fuel then do the same steps that he said. DEF or AdBlue in you case is corrosive to metal and it will cause damage no matter how small. I don’t know what engine you have but referencing Cummins standards, injection pressures are over 1792 bar (26000 for the US guys) and that Def can crystallize inside the injectors causing major issues.

Vehicle has not been moved, engine has not been started and key has not been installed so no low side fuel pump operation. I have drained most of the tank (siphon) and plan on dropping and cleaning it thoroughly by rinsing with water and detergent. Will wipe it down as much a possible and then dry overnight. How did this work out for you? I had the same exact game plan. Except I wasn’t planning on using a detergent 🤔 I have dropped the tank and drained the 25 gallons and a quart of DEF fluid out, I’ve been wiping all surfaces I can with clean lint free rags(hard to reach the ends on a 48 gallon tank). Then a final wipe with a rag with isopropyl alcohol and then a dry rag before it evaporates. Next I plan on flushing with a garden hose then drain, wipe and tilt it on its side overnight to drain every drop to one side. I plan on dumping fresh diesel on the low side pump or submerging it in a bucket full of diesel not quite sure yet. I’ll change filters and I like the idea the video owner mention of running 3 gallons of fresh diesel on the low side only just not sure where I should disconnect it at to do this?
@JohnBaggerly
@JohnBaggerly 5 ай бұрын
Cleaning worked great. I did use detergent and wiped and dried thoroughly. I did replace filters, however did not flush lines with diesel. My key was never operated so the low side never pumped any of the contaminated diesel. After reinstalling tank, I filled full with fresh diesel. It will take several cycles to completely fill the lines so be patient. I would say if you did not operate the key following contamination, this will be sufficient. If key was operated, then lines will need to be flushed. Videos show the flushing is accomplished by disconnecting the line at the final filter and flushing into a container. Needless to say I will never make that mistake again!!!!! Good luck.
