We are bombarded with so much info on social media that lead us to question our entire lives. Even when we make conscious efforts to not compare ourselves to others, once we see something that we’d potentially aspire to, our automatic thoughts is to question why we’re not there yet.

Yea, I’m in med school and live in an under developed complex that I cannot wait to be able to afford to move out of. An associate of mine who moved here at the same time I did recently moved out. She openly brags about this on social media which to me ofc I’m happy for her but it was a blow to my heart the way she was doing so. Anyway, I’m taking a break from social media. My life is real, can’t bother with the fake!

Social media has brainwashed 95% of society and it’s sad. People have lost their individuality and are just way too influenced by aesthetic, having your body done, and being this baddie role. Nothing wrong with working a regular job and living your life for you. To me, social media isn’t sustainable and being a content creator/influencer is very up and down with the algorithms constantly changing. Be yourself and live life the way you see best fits. Falling into trends and trying to rush the course of your life will really make you lose yourself.

Yes, I think that content creators can do 'too much' when they follow trends and their aesthetics. They can promote their viewers to have exactly the same life as them because they think that's what's best for them. Honestly do whatever you want, there's no point in following in everyone's step. i also think KZbin should be used with moderation so that people don't wake up everyday thinking they should do better, and better, and better and wondering why these KZbinrs are better. I love you all and hope you understand my message

I feel this! I got rid of my social media, best decision ever, but even now sometimes I go back on social media randomly and it's crazy because I can feel the insecurities starting to come back. All these body/clothing/household item trends blow past us faster than most can afford, it's pointless. So grateful I have learned the strength and willpower to know to when step away and that it's probably heavily edited, and they've got thousands to spend on their body. It's so unrealistic, and we're real over here! 🎉

I got off IG at the start of the year to take a break from it because Instagram in particular will flood you with advertisements and will really make you feel like you need things that you probably don’t even care to have. I wanted a break to figure out what I REALLY LIKE instead of being influenced by everything we’re constantly shown. IG is fun but sometimes you need a break to come back down to earth cause in real life people are normal af and to me that’s so much more relatable and just nice to see. Love this video ♥️

The reason we don't see the traditional route (going to law school, med school, getting a degree etc.) of getting a career anymore getting pushed is because many people realized that it's not the only way to become successful. A lot of content creators make more money, get experiences that many with a 9-5 will provably never experience, so now nobody wants to do the 9-5. I am of the generation that truly regrets not jumping on social media from the start in my 20s because with 2 degrees and a 9-5, I cannot say I'm fully financially stable. And many people are like me.
@yougotgamesonyourphone6947
@yougotgamesonyourphone6947 Жыл бұрын
It doesnt matter how early you joined social media. If you don’t have the look society wants or didn’t create content people don’t care to see, you would be still be in the same boat as you are in now. Not only that, but people are getting degrees in useless fields then wonder why they can’t find jobs anywhere. There are plenty of people making great money with 9-5s, folks are just trying to keep up with all these luxury influencers instead of just trying to be average.

tiktok to me seems like its one of the least authentic social media apps hahah, filters galore, the algorithm only pushing certain people (who fit the western beauty standards and are wealthy) into the spotlight, fake morning and nightly routines, made up story times, etc. I work with children, and i can see first hand how tiktok affects them, it's scary fr. their attention span is so so low, they're mean (like really shallow), focused on aesthetics, looks and how people dress and lack empathy (probably because you can see really horrible things on tiktok and then just keep scrolling) etc : (

Yes. Regarding gift-giving, we were struggling financially at the time, and a few friends were having baby showers in the same month. I couldn't afford anything more than a pacifier on any of their registries and didn't want to show up with just a pacifier. So I went to my local thrift store, and they had a sale on halo sleep sacks, which were on their registries and in great condition. I wrestled for a long time on whether or not it would be acceptible to bring something that was thrifted. I ended up buying the sleep sacks, washed them, and refreshed them (even ironed them!). My friends seemed very appreciative, and I ended up feeling pretty good about it afterward. Gifting thrifted items should be more socially acceptable.

Also when it comes to hair, I am so happy I have locs. I get a retwist every two months and only spend $85 for wash and style. The luxury bags, I was never do it again. I remember buying a MK bag for $300 and I love it at first but then I regretted it like now why the heck I spent $300 on this purse and now I don’t have it anymore because I threw it away. I've never seen or heard someone outside of the sphere of social media mention looking down on 9-5 jobs, brands, etc. A few "influencers" mention what they like or don't like & puppets follow. Also think of ut this way as i'm just spreading awareness if suddenly everyone is their own "boss babe" and all the 9-5's disappear, where would that leave society such as who woukd be repairing your bathrooms, your homes, installing your ac, distributing your food, plus dont forget that would mean the "fancy" restaurants you go to eat get shut down because theres no one to cook or no waiters. Respect to all the people that do 9-5 you are the new luxurious today because you help others. Thank you ❤

Great video Lucy! However I do think we are moving into an era where people are waking up to the illusion of social media. I would say that 10 years ago the jet set lifestyle was really held as the aspiration to strive for, however I see a slow shift happening where people are waking up. I think it’s because over the past decade so many have tried and failed as entrepreneurs/ influencers and have realised it’s not really as easy as it’s made out to be.

Another thing about trends was peoples pseudo spirituality journey, or their perception of spirituality feels so delusional. And they own it with no shame, you see titles like “be delusional to get your desired reality” “your thoughts create your reality” blah blah blah… and NO, reality doesn’t always go your way and THATS OK! and from someone who has mental illness I’ve had to actively seperate myself from my thoughts and let go of the belief about what I thought my thinking means. It’s doesn’t mean anything or reflect my character and we need to collectively snap back to reality.

I think a lot of people in our society has made social media their whole world and they don’t value the real world as much. I don’t come from a wealthy background but I even see my own family members going “all out” like buying so much birthday gifts or Christmas gifts for their children and immediately posting it on social media. Meanwhile they were complaining about how they’re gonna afford gifts. We put social media on a pedestal to the point where we let it dictate how we live our lives and what we can and can’t show.

This is one of the realest vlogs I have heard in the longest time. You have just made me realise how influenced I have become by watching influencers on youtube. Don't get me wrong, I like nice things and like to live a good life, but you are right that we are being pressured to live a certain way to be accepted. Thank you for reminding me of REALITY.

Wow. This is amazing this was meant for me to see! The main thing I have learned is that JUST BECAUSE I SEE IT ON MY SCREEN DOESN’T MEAN I HAVE TO BE THAT WAY! The fact that you say “ yes they have those collections because they are an influencer, they are dressed that way in the gym because they are making videos” that helped me a lot! I am not an influencer that is not my job lol I can be normal!!!!!!! A thing you did not mention but is HUUUGGEEEEE FOR MY AGE GROUP OF GEN-Z is University!!!! So many people think it’s worthless or we need to become entrepreneurs like work for ourselves at home somehow making money ! We have no representation of people with careers . We don’t watch lawyers doctors professors electricians plumbers service men corporate etc! We don’t see any of that ! It’s like those real world jobs aren’t shown in the media world so they don’t exist. Problem is we exist in the real world not the media world so when we get to college we are lost . We don’t know what to do!! Like mm yes becoming a veterinarian seems fun like I can be passionate about it but if I think everyone else is out having fun living “the life” I want to do that too and now pursuing veterinary medicine seems like a waste of my life. But no! It wouldn’t be ! I wish WORKING AND MAKING TOP DOLLARS FROM BEING EDUCATED AND TRAINED WAS NORMALIZED AGAIN! I feel like back in the day people who had luxury lifestyles were educated professionals . So yes they had the high-maintenance routines, designer or well dressed clothes , went out to nice places because they went to school young and worked for it! Nowadays it seems like we see so many young people who did not work for the money they have or lifestyle since social media paid them and so we also do not want to work because they don’t!!! It’s all really weird how we want to be like people online! Back in the day television was for entertainment and social media was for friends! The combination of the two has warped things and makes it hard to tell the difference between real life and online fantasy! Thanks for the video I lovedddddd it!

This is a great topic! I find myself just like so many others falling into the trap of scrolling and comparing all the time. I’ve tried deleting my social medias but I eventually come right back to it and then I’m right back to the scrolling and comparison game. It also doesn’t help there’s so much fakery on there raising the expectations that much more. It can be so toxic. Loved this video❤️

I have a good friend who became an accountant, and at first, I was surprised that she wanted that career. We went to an art high school together, so I assumed most students saw themselves in a creative career. I know I saw that for myself. I asked her why, and her answer was simple "I enjoy working with numbers.😁" It made me think. There is nothing wrong with doing a job for the simple enjoyment of it. I mean, as long as the work is enjoyable/ doesn't drive you insane and you're getting paid.There's is nothing wrong with having a "normal" job. Also, life happens, and there's nothing wrong with finding new careers engaging. I still work towards an art career, and now I also teach part-time cause I find that rewarding as well. Essentially, go where your joy is, cause things are tough, and we all need some joy. Even if that joy is simple, even if that joy is working with numbers. 😁

Tbh there are so many things that I am hearing for the first time. Like why do you want to have a large collection of wigs and perfume you can't afford. I use one perfume per time and all. I only buy new clothes when I can afford them. I watch lifestyle vlogs a lot and it just makes me know that I don't want to be poor; in the sense that I want to be able to afford everything I want and not to pepper anyone or whatsoever. I'm glad that an influencer is talking about this cuz it's really getting out of hand

With the gifting friends topic, my friends and I gift each other personalized items (and homemade ones too) and I honestly loveee homemade items way more than I would a luxury item, because it feels like they know me and they wanna give me something that shows my personality, instead of showing off how much they love me by equating that to money. It's really nice :)

You said this perfectly I had to delete tik tok because I got tired of the black girl luxury lifestyle videos popping up . These influencers are lying there a lot of influencers that do have 9 to 5s they just don’t say anything or they are turning tricks if you know what I’m saying which is their business. And then there are a lot that do make their money from influencing but I say a small amount . My advice is to delete social media and work on your self specially specially tik tok ( that app to me needs to be Ban ) or watch videos that you can relate to. I watch week in my life 9 to 5 because I can relate to that . Stop watching people you can’t relate to . And stop believing these people they are lying

I completely agree social media is a little toxic it makes you desire lifestyles that are way far from reality. The reality is that most of us have 9-5 jobs and not all of us can afford certain lifestyles they seem too portray. Deactivating my socials has changed my life. My time is spent wiser I don't feel the urge to be scrolling or keeping up with someone else lifestyle to see what they have or what they posted. It just feels great ive been off socials for 3 months now and i dont regret it at all. Remember everyone it isn't ok to compare your lifestyles to others not everyone is meant to have the same lifestyle.

Social media is a clear component of mimetic desire. Start asking yourself if what you want in this world is your own ACTUAL thoughts or a combination of what others have that makes you think you want that too. I remember when being an entrepreneur was a big thing online and still is, I thought that's what I wanted. Became an entrepreneur, and was pretty successful at it but hated it the whole time. Social media influenced me to think that is the only metric of success but nah i'd rather have reduced stress and just be employed. We can't escape mimesis but it is important to recognize if your being influenced by external people/things, etc instead of yourself.

This is the best video I’ve ever watched. Don’t get me wrong I do enjoy some few luxury things and i just happen to be a content creator but one thing i pride myself is being my authentic self on my platform. The low exposure, matte black & beige aesthetic is not for me and it’s just not original. When i see people and their apartments are literally identical to other influencers & wake up make the same ice coffee / matcha etc it’s sad tbh

Ok I do believe that our clothes don’t have to be designer but fast fashion ain’t it👎🏾 just bc a shirt is $7 don’t mean it’s worth it. I’m almost never comfortable in fashion nova, shein or PLT…nobody wants to be pulling at their clothes all day bc they’re so cheaply made that it’s riding up or a button is about to pop. Not to mention if you wash it once it’s over with😂 So yes if that shirt or dress is $60-$100 and I like it I’m getting it. Invest in yourself ladies✨💅🏾

But I still want to go to school & get my degree in psychology. The content I do definitely makes sense too what I want to do in my career in psychology. I feel so free doing my content because I’m not trying to be like anyone I just do it. I be inspired by some people but I never do exactly what someone do. And also I don’t be on social media like that and now I just thrive off my own authenticity. Not influenced by anyone. Life is so much better & god has been my biggest supporter❤️
