Jeff is 100% correct here. Although when it comes to suburban deer there are two sides to that coin. Yes, they are absolutely used to the human presence, our scent and loud noises. Meaning even mature bucks will return within 24 hours of being spooked because they have an extremely limited range. However, they interact with so many humans that they are way more in tune to the shape of the human body, to the point where we even have to keep our faces hidden in the early season because camo paint isn't good enough.

This is my first year hunting - shot rifle in Tennessee, got my first deer. Bow hunting season in PA (where I live) starts 12/26, so it will be my first time hunting on my property (10 acres). When I was younger I can remember sitting there with my bow in hand by the grip with my release clicked on the string. I wanted the very least movement possible when a deer was approaching. I can remember some very cold hands in those early November days. I hunt with a crossbow now and use a hanger. Probably best to lay a crossbow across your lap, complete opposite of a compound.great video Jeff thanks. Oh and thank god for harnesses to keep you in the tree during those naps. 😉

Great tip. I've found that absolute minimization of noise and movement is very critical on very calm days and less so on windy days. I use a recurve bow and shot 10 very nice Pa. mountain deer while standing. Never move when a deer is headed in your direction even when their head is down. I always wait till they are past me to shoot and only move as slow as a snail when I do. Thanks again for the great video.

I missed my chance at a mature buck this season because the climber I was in creaked as I was pivoting (while standing) to get into position for a shot. Even though my movement was obscured he stopped and locked on to the sound and as hard as I tried to stay frozen longer than him he won the staring contest in the end. I was one of those guys that had the climber on the back side of the tree thinking that it would make for an easier shot with the bow. I'm pretty much a novice with climbers and that experience isn't helping me build confidence in them. I see more disadvantages to hunting with a climber than advantages (so far). Wish I could sit down all the time Jeff. I've broken just about everything and have kidneys that just naturally produce stone's. I know my movement is a big reason I don't have a wall full of mounts like you. I was just born to be in the woods and have been since I could walk and have had many opportunity's that were so close but just wasn't able to get it done. I lost a big buck as a 14yr old kid due to a shot I knew I shouldn't take and yet I took it. I found it 2 days later completely eaten by coyotes. From that day I made a decision to never shoot over 30 yard's and never take a marginal shot. 30yrs has passed since that day and I have killed alot of deer but still have never put one on the wall with a bow. Listening to your video's made me realize I do quite a few thing's wrong and with all the nice buck I have on camera's I will changing the way I do thing's quite a bit. Thank you for putting out something that will stick with me for the rest of my life.

Oh man those were terribly dangerous too 😲 The FT stands don't have a swivel, but they have a big, wide, quite seat that you can turn to the right or left and easily shoot from, quietly. Amen to that too. I've always looked at bowhunting in a stand as time to relax 😁 I have actually never stood for bowhunting now since 1985, with the exception of the very early years of standing on a branch to hunt. Which was crazy!

I read books in the stand. Quiet, no movement other than turning the page. I've had to put my book down to shoot a deer probably a dozen times. I wear bibs and keep my coat half zipped so I just slip my book in and under my bibs so it won't fall then shoot.

I bow hunt sitting down. Standing is to tiring. I don't bring all my toys. Because I'm always digging around looking for something if I do. All I have is my Phone. I have learned to only move my hands within my body outline with camo gloves on. If I have to reach for something it is in super slow motion with my eyes scanning for any deer movement. Great Video.

I have a hard time shooting sitting down because of the shooting rails that’s on most climbers. I hunt public land mostly and a hang on isn’t really an option. It’s either a climber or a ground blind. What do you recommend ? Also, could you speak on ground blinds please and what’s your take on them?

Am I the only one who gets intense aches just sitting there? If I stop moving completely, my back starts to tighten up and hurt, my elbows stiffen up, my hips start to hurt, hands get stove up. My neck gets stiff. The more I try calm my mind and focus on the woods the more these aches come to the active portion of my mind. I’m only 33. Getting the phone out actually keeps me right. I’ve had more deer walk up on me while I was on the phone than any other time. Think it has to do with being able to keep still and keep my mind off of the aches. Deer are absolute Ninjas. I’ve had entire families walk up on me that I’ve never heard. And then the sound, especially early season, you have a cacophony of noises from squirrels chattering, to birds chirping, crickets and cicadas. Turkeys strutting nearby. (Actually had a group of turkeys spook a doe towards me, pretty entertaining to watch). I hear dogs in the distance, the road nearby, a leaf falling off a tree near me actually may as well be an explosion it’s so loud. Rain drops if it’s rained at all recently. Limbs snapping off trees. You’re own breathing and heartbeat. You hear all of this how can you tune that out to hear probably the quietest animal in the woods? And does anyone else get intense pain when they stop moving for extended periods of time or should I see a doctor?

Just purchased a Lone Wolf stand that has a built in bow hanger on the platform. Wrapped felt around the area to help quiet in case I bump my bow. Hoping it works out well. I'm guilty of resting my bow on my lap. Better than hanging in on the tree but still has too much movement as you noted

We get so many contacts it is tough to keep up. Our only drive to site visits are within 2 hours from home...or in certain portions of OH, MI, WI, MN, IN and IL...very specific locations tho. Diane works 50-70 hours per week, 7 days a week trying to keep up. We also get so many contacts with no location and no phone numbers...those contacts get contacted last. Diane is trying to keep up tho and we are trying to put together some help for her. It would seem like a quick response...but when we get 40-50 contacts per day and spots open, I know that she tends to work on the contacts with full info and centered around our currently planned trips...even then she can't keep up so we are working on a solution. We also get dozens of contacts looking for free information on how to design their land. She tried to let those folks know we can't help them...or have time to help them, even if we wanted to. I work 70-80 hours per week, often 13-14 hours per day with driving, so something I can't take care of. Ever. I screenshot your comments to Diane and sent them to her... With the exception of a handful of OH, MI and WI client openings thru Feb of 2021...we have no openings for other states other than thru my monthly fly-in trips. My next open fly in trip for other states is I think in April? But Diane keeps the schedule ..I just go where she tells me ☺️ My 3 day fly-ins are booking at $7450 + airfare. We already have 125 client days booked from mid December thru mid Sept...so spots are limited to very specific locations and contacts without locations, size of parcel, etc tend not to get contacted quickly. Again, it would seem like an easy email to send out...but it is not, when you have dozens of email chains going for booking specific spots, all day long.

Bow was on my lap ,It didnt notice me pick the bow off my lap into shooting position , it noticed me when I stood up very very slowly while drawing back . So next time I'll try what you say and try my best to keep the bow into shooting position 100% of the time and shoot sitting , I can shoot sitting just dosnt feel rite . Haha

Not a tree stand but I had a deer walk within 10 feet of me in a ground blind that I made last year , and I know what you mean by shooting when your sitting unless your already standing . Because It wasn't untill I stood up to take a shot, he noticed me, I even waited untill its head was down grabbing an apple to draw back . It still noticed me.

I understand about sitting down in your tree stand with a full size bow ( 28-38 ) axle to axle but how well does that work with short bows ( 18-27 ) inches axle to axle I am getting ready to use a short triangle bow this year and range shooting is good and accurisy is good. But have not used it for actual hunting yet it is about 21.5 inches axle to axle will I still be able to sit and hunt as in the way that you describe?

I always hunt with my ears. I’m 25 and with my landscape deer hides blend right into it and trick my eyes. So if I hear something I’ll close my eyes and try to pin point it with my ears first then use my eyes

Lol i have been saying this for years but everyone says they think im wrong. I actually practice out of a chair. You need to learn to turn your hips a little. I have gotten handcuffed and had deer to my right side that I couldnt get to because I was sitting BUT ii didn't spook em. I actually have alot of hearing loss in my left ear but most of the time I hear most deer before I see them. This and the other vid u did one this may be my 2 new favorites . Many hunters overlook or were never taught this.....one thing though...how do you stop from gouging up your bottom cam which tears up serving holding your bow like that?

Question: What are your thoughts regarding a seat at the base of a tree or blowdown/rock etc? (Un-elevated) I’ve got friends who swears it’s almost easier then being in a tree but I am very leery. This video got me thinking about that because of relative position and how easy it is for deer to pick you off at a distance. (When elevated/in the tree.) - I am a saddle hunter and have been for almost 15 years. I think I was one of the first if not the first to combine rock climbing aiders with sticks back then. I broke my back twice in the 90’s. I cannot sit for long periods in my treestand. I stand and lean against the tree 2/3 more than sitting. I can shoot from sitting if need be. I don’t have any issues killing big bucks this way

I am very careful on my tree selection, because I'm a bigger guy (6'3, 210), and I know I'm almost too fidgety to be a serious hunter. If the sun is in the deer's face, and you're careful to hunt with enough back cover you can get away with a bit more movement.

For sure Zac! Unfortunately so very few "perfect" trees where you need them. Sitting down, hunting with your ears and zoning out helps a lot...I sleep a lot too ☺️

Oh, you definitely have to stand up...sorry. misunderstanding 😊 Or shift to the right on the seat a bit...which requires quiet clothes and a quiet seat. Or you have to stand up and shoot to your right if more extreme...which has happened to me around 3-4 times in 36 seasons.

Just based on decades of shooting dozens of mature bucks and never spooking any...well, except when I've missed them 😁 This is a black and white thing for me, wouldn't even allow someone to hunt with me if they didn't follow these rules 😉 Too little time...not enough mature bucks to play around with and spook 👍

Guys shoot to much poundage. That is why they can't shoot sitting down everybody wants to be 30inch draw when they are 27inch and shoot 70 pounds when the need to be shooting 55.

That's how it is comfortable to me. Been using same or similar trigger that way for 25 years. Been all good. That throat with grip is too close to bend my finger behind 😉 I would just close your eyes for a couple of seconds and think happy thoughts 👍
