I asked for the same thing the first time Elise's husband came on the channel and took out the profilometer :) However, I think that with the variety of hooks that exist on the market it may end up taking quite a while to do, so it may be smarter to do smaller videos like this one that can be released bit by bit more often and put into a playlist, before compiling them into one big video with chapters per hook type and brand (be it just because at the moment super long video compilations from creators seem to have a good reach)

I just want to add that just because a hook has some drag to it, it does not mean it is a bad hook. I like to use my wooden hooks (more drag) for very slick, smooth yarns like Simply Soft. I have found that the wooden hooks hold on to the yarn better and thus give you more control. The opposite is true as well. If you have a very rough feeling yarn (some of the older acrylics) it makes it so much easier to work with if you have a very slick hook. I have all kinds of hooks and I tend to stick with my Clover Amour. After this video, I may have to try the Furls. Thanks.

My husband just gifted one of the new aluminum hooks for my birthday! And my zodiac resin hook too. He works with metal on a daily basis and is impressed how smooth, well balanced and overall nice the hook is. It is heavier than i am used, never had a Odyssey so the weight difference between my furls resin and wood hooks to the aluminum is quite big, but it fits so well into the hand and i am amazed that my wrist don´t get tired earlier than normal although it weighs more. Just such good craftmanship! I learned with cheap hooks, and when i teach someone how to crochet i always use those cheap hooks from woolworth, they are totally fine. No one needs to spend that much money, but if someone can it is very nice because the overall quality is just so much better.

Good Afternoon Elise. I love your KZbin channel. I learned how to crochet when I was about six or seven. I was taught using a Boyd Crochet Hook. I hadn’t crocheted in many years, but started to crochet again about 15 years ago. I’d heard a lot of talk regarding the Clover Crochet Hooks and purchased a set. I was addicted to Clover Crochet Hooks. I had never heard of the Furls Brand until they were discontinuing the Odyssey Crochet Hooks. I purchased every size that cost me a fortune. When the Furls Silver Streamline Crochet Hooks came out I purchased the entire set & I took a chance. Well IMO! The Furls Siver Streamline Crochet Hooks are by far the Absolute Best Crochet Hooks that I have ever used. When Furls came out with the new black streamline hook I also purchased the entire set. They look very similar to the original silver hooks, but IMO they aren’t even close. Now Furls came out with a bronze color crochet hook. I only purchased one to see if I like them. The Silver Streamline IMO are by far the absolute Best Crochet Hooks that I have ever used. I wrote this in the middle of your video so IDK how the video ends. Have a Great Day

Elise, a little suggestion. For me, when I’ve gotten a new metal hook, (and I do have a couple of the dollar tree hooks) when I start to try them out and I feel that they have some “drag” I now keep a fairly rough little old hand towel with my crochet stuff and I rub the hook with the towel and that seems to do the trick. I’m sure there’s many others out there who’ve learned this little trick through trial and error. Lol. Keep up the wonderful work you do.

The shape of the top of the head and how it hooks/releases the yarn is what I look at. Not sure if this helps me justify getting Furls, though. These tests are fun. I think the essential issue is the crafter's preference. Weight can be a factor for crafters with muscle issues (arthritis etc.). Hand size is a factor. Ergonomics is the critical issue for some. For me, inline design, weight, and length are vital factors.

Hello! Funny i been eyeing the furls streamlined hooks but it wasn't pulling me in until they released the blush line! I ordered 1 to test it out. Im really excited to get it! Thanks for the scientific test. Im also eyeing the Ophire bubblegum wood hook. Slowly but surely i will get them. Thank you!

I have to say... part of what I love about wood is that it is warm... as in not cool to the touch. Because I'm a nerd, I would love to test different types (species) of wood to see if there are differences in the "resonances" or patterns of the roughness. My intuitive way of knowing would hazard a guess that some people (especially neurodivergent people) are sensitive to the "pattern" of roughness -- spiky differences vs uniform differences. (I'm sitting in a room with a really loud HVAC blower -- because that's what every doctor wants for their call room -- a 72 dB continuous fan blowing in the place where they're supposed to be able to get a brief amount of sleep while on call for the weekend), so I didn't hear exactly what your husband said, but visually the pattern looked much more regularly undulating on the wood. And... there's my pager!

Now that would be an interesting test! Thank you for the suggestion! And I hope you get some rest!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

I love that you do comparison tests of hooks and yarns. It really helps in the decision making process of what is best to buy, and helps save money on making mistakes as well as enjoying the best quality results. I hope to try out the Furls Odyssey hooks some day. I'm wondering, have you or anyone out there ever tried the Pioneer Woman crochet hooks sold at Walmart. They are very pretty, but sometimes pretty can be misleading. Thank you for all your wonderful videos and the work you put into them.

For those who like a longer hook, someone suggested to put an Ipad pencil grip on the end of a shorter hook to give it more length. It’s a tip I try to share as often as I can because it helped me so much!

This was rather interesting comparing the furls hooks. It is good to know the difference in smoothness of my different hooks. My latest replacement was a metal streamline. It is good to know that it is as good as my few Odyssey hooks. But for warmth, there is nothing like wood to keep my hands happy. But alas, they will break as I do too many Amigurumi.

I'm curious how the Furls Streamline wood hook compares to Nelsonwood hooks. Nelsonwood hooks are quite pricey, but you get to customize it and they turn out extremely beautiful.

Your crochet work is impeccable. Have enjoyed your videos on hacks, amigurumi, support of others makers, etc. Came away from this video feeling like it was more of an endorsement for Furls than anything else. Maybe I would have felt a little differently if you had not brought out their yarn. I am glad the Dollar Store hook was good because that is what some can only afford. I have 3 Furls hooks and very rarely use them. I am subscribed and will continue to watch.

Because who doesn’t need a good doohickey?? It’s so fun to watch you with hubby - you make such an adorable couple 😊 I want a Furls so bad, but I wish they would make 2.5 or 2.75, as I do much more Amigurumi than other crochet. Did Furls gift the yarn?

I wish they did as well! I typically use a 2.5 mm hook as well. And yes! They gifted them! 🧶🧶🧶

Elise, I absolutely love your reviews of various crochet items. Ive been using the cheap ergonomic hooks for years, and have made some beautiful things. Would love to try some of the more pricey hooks, but so far, I havent invested. Maybe this furls streamline will get me to invest.

So… I picked up a few of the new Furls streamline metal hooks and I do love them but they are VERY heavy. Not at first but I find I ache much sooner than with other hooks. I have a few of their resin hooks but I REALLY like metal more and have likes of different hooks for different yarns or projects. I see a lot of younger KZbinrs really gushing over the Furls Streamline but I’m 50 and my joints are not what they once were and that small amount of weight really makes a difference in my length of use. I find myself going back to the Tulip and rarely social media liked Susan Bates ergonomic hooks that are inexpensive enough to just buy on sale and leave with various larger or on the go WIPs. I really do love the Furls Streamline hooks other than the weight 🤷♀.. OH and don’t let them roll off onto the tile 😣I’ve already put a dent into one of the tips of my black ones-that hurt lol

They are the heaviest hooks I've ever used before. So far they don't cause any fatigue with my joints but I can see how they could. ❤️❤️❤️

Well! I found a deal on the Clover Amour 10 piece set. Yoykies! I thought my $14.99 set with their floral handles and matching tote were good enough. Well, these are amazing! And even as a beginner I can see how they’ll make me better at crochet!

As a newbie knitter smoothness and the “grab” of knitting needles is good information. The girl I watch who teaches beginning knitting recommends wood or bamboo needles so yarn doesn’t slip off as easily. I don’t recall anyone ever mentioning this with crocheting. I’m guessing the opposite is true. I am a somewhat experienced crocheter and I like projects to fly off my hooks as I crochet. I have used Bowes hooks, but at almost 70 I used ergonomic silicone covered hooks to help with an arthritic thumb. I bought two sets of fairly inexpensive hooks from Amazon, then bought much larger hooks with similar soft handles. They were very inexpensive, but like your dollar tree hook, they work fine. Are there any experienced knitters out there that prefer bamboo needles or metal needles? Why do you like one over the other? I’ve noticed it’s much easier to drop stitches in knitting, and much more challenging to fix or pick them up once dropped. Does the smoothness help or cause this issue? Thanks for this geek out video.

Thanks so much for sharing! I have a friend who is a knitter and she likes bamboo. As a knitter I like metal as well. Would love for other knitters to chime in too! 🧶🧶🧶

@@EliseRoseCrochet I also knit as well as crochet and prefer metal needles over everything else due to the drag or sticking, but using the others did teach me to loosen my tension, lol. Seeing this video now justifies me really wanting the newest Furls hooks, just hope I have the money when they go on sale, lol. Being on a limited income, they always seem to go on sale when I am broke, lol.

Dear Elise, Thank you for sharing and I’m glad your husband brought his profilometer to test the new Furls hook - it will definitely be interesting to see if there is a difference between the new silver, onyx and blush Aluminium Furls hook. Is there a huge difference between the odyssey and the new aluminium when crocheting 🧶 I would love to know if you found any difference between them. Love your channel. Take care and stay safe. God’s Blessings to you and your family 🩷🧶🙏🏽😻🐶

This was very interesting. I would love to try the Furls hook. I have those Dollar Tree hooks. They are amazing for the price. I also found that inexpensive hooks can be made smoother if you give the metal a little scrub with a Brillo pad and a tiny bit of Dawn. Some hooks I got on Amazon had a lot of drag. A scrub with a Brillo pad turned them into some pretty good hooks.

I like shorter hooks like the dollar tree and Hobby Lobby with the flowers leaves on them. They don't hurt my hand over time. I like tapered handle.
