My quirky habit is I connect all my yarn scraps and wind them into cakes so I can keep them by my bed and crochet continuous Granny square blankets in the dark. Before bed, in the middle of the night if I wake up, whatever. Once they start getting big I sleep under them while crocheting!

I am so guilty of taking projects in the car and on vacation and not working on them. I have done this so many times now and I have come to the conclusion that bringing a crochet project with me is like having a security blanket. I feel better just knowing it is there, even if I never work on it. I have some crochet hooks with handmade wooden handles and I just love how they feel in my hand and for some odd reason, I hate to be parted from them. I know this is weird, but it's how I roll. LOL!!!
@sweethaven5
@sweethaven5 Күн бұрын
Nope not weird at all!! It’s like the saying “bringing everything, but the kitchen sink” on trips. I take a couple of bags, filled with crochet projects, color pencils, 2 or 3 coloring books, IPad and extra yarn to go babysit. Do I use any of those items? Rarely!!!😂 Too busy playing with grandkids 😂 but I do crochet when they are engrossed in TV or tablets or in bed.😂

@@sweethaven5 Oh good. I am so glad to know I am not alone in my obsession. LOL!!! We drive from So Cal to AZ a lot to visit our daughters that live there and I will read, sleep, listen to the radio, watch a DVD, all with my project bag either on my lap or tucked in between my feet on the floor. If I do pull my crocheting out, I only work on it for a few minutes then back in the bag it goes. Very strange. Maybe I should take less fiddely projects with me as I do hate getting out scissors and needles and so forth in the car. Will have to think on that before our next vacation.

For some reason, I'm not a movie person, so when I started crocheting and then knitting I was relieved, because I'd have something to do to keep me from getting restless during the movie. So, the test you have to pass, as the filmmaker, is did you make a movie that's so good it makes me set down my project just to watch? That's a good show! 🤩

"In the zone!" this is the whole reason I crochet now in my later years, to be distracted from some very real, painful physical restrictions. To help make pain meds work better/longer, I took up knitting/crochet to give my hands something to to while my mind was absorbed in the intricacy of working out a pattern. So, yes I did forget to eat too! But I found hours would have gone by, and still I hadn't reach for the pain relievers! Paired up with binge watching an exciting series - wow!

Your comment touches my heart and is making me tear up. Good for you; I love your attitude. ❤You are making lemonade with those lemons!My dear Mom in law took up crafting and painting as a way to deal with Parkinson's. She would say much the same things. When the pain and shakiness would get bad, she would retreat to her craft room, and it would help her so much to focus on a project. She's in Heaven now, and we all miss her, but she left a wonderful legacy.❤

I scored 18 out of 28 on this list. I do have a couple of quirks. One you kind of mentioned I have a fear of running out of yarn and always buy to much for a project and end up with lots of single skeins. The second one is I like to show off my crochet skills and when I go out I purposely choose a WIP that will impress others or be noticed (e.g. a particular difficult stitch pattern, Lost in Time shawl). Thanks so much for gifting us with your channel, honesty, personal time, and advice, while not a person who does amigurumi. I do so love your channel and video.

I can't help but ask the recipient of my crocheted gift: How's that blanket doing? Are you wearing that poncho I made for you? I don't mind if people register my work, but I have to know to whom and if they appreciate the value of it. I also put on the TV to something that just becomes background noise. If I pay attention, I inevitably have to frog a row or two, or "fudge it". And then there's thrift store yarn which is often vintage and not so soft. So I grudgingly make bags to give away. Quality doesn't come cheap! Loved this episode, Elise Rose! ❤

I"m guilty of almost all of these (especially 'one more row syndrome), but I don't think crochet is superior, but part of the reasons I crochet and not knit is because of the knitting snobs (I'm looking at you LYS) who think they're better. Also, I was recently traveling and in 4 airports, and let me tell you, if you're fishing for crochet compliments/conversations, the Atlanta airport wins by a country mile. So many fun conversations in that airport. Also, I just shared your 'stop scrolling and crochet' video with my students at a major CA university. So I'm not only a Crochet Evangelist, but Elise is enabling me.

I only got three? What I noticed was that I actually did the exact opposite of a lot of the list. I do: - Crochet past bedtime - Crochet in weird places - Underestimate yarn I don't: - Hord hooks (I started knitting before I started Crocheting, and one of the things I love about Crochet is that you don't need to worry about having a million different hooks like you do with needles (circular, straight, double pointed, different lengths...). I bought myself a set of clover amour hooks and that's it) - keep my projects (I almost never keep my projects, I love giving things away. In fact, the few WIPs I have abandoned are things I was making for myself.) - too many wips (I usually have a couple projects going at once, one smaller one for travel and a larger one for home. I almost always finish what I started.) - buy random yarn (pretty much all yarn I buy is for a specific project. I don't really have a stash) - get distracted from movies (I almost always have a movie or audiobook or something going when I craft) - buying too many patterns/not following patterns i buy (I rarely buy patterns. I know I will just use them as a guideline, so I usually just find something basic and free and use that as inspiration. The only times I follow patterns are for amigarumi, which I rarely make) There were actually way more things I don't do, those were just what I could remember off the top of my head.

I give away most my projects, I work with kids, even donating 2 to 4 hours a month, to teach the kids how to crochet and knit, those who cannot afford after school activities, 19 years so far, and I sell some pieces online, with 100% of the money donated to cat rescue or families with pets who can't afford buying food or vet bills. I got 4 other fribds to join. It's a win-win, enjoy my kitting/ crocheting projects, and see the end to ensure that others who don't crochet, can enjoy it too. I used to crocheting rag rugs, an absolutely incredible hobby, I sold every single rug and puff seats, with money donated to kids in need. I’ve been trying to do patterns completely from pattern but I’ve noticed that truly there’s a mistake or I just don’t like their technique. I still end up pretty close to pattern. I have decided next year and try my first pattern design. I’m finding I can’t find the pattern to do what I want so. It should be fun. I first need finish deadline projects. One other thing I need to crochet constantly so I always have a project with me. What’s fun I find it’s a conversation starter. Thanks for your videos. Sending prayers love and hugs.

Turkey is the yarn capital of the world and very touristy. I would love a yarn vaca there and I would wear the same clothes every single day so that my suitcases would fit all the cool yarn I would bring home. I’m guilty of complaining to my husband that his television shows aren’t crochet friendly because they don’t have enough dialogue to keep me involved while I’m crocheting. 😂 I’m a crochet promoter and have taught a dozen or more people how. ❤️‍🔥

Hi Elise Rose. Sorry this is so long - you can skip it. 1. Scoping out crochet/knit - and take pictures to emulate! 2. It's important to have multiple WIPs because the Moon (mood) changes signs every two-and-a-half days, so when my mood changes and I don't feel like working my current project, I still have something to work on! 3. Even though I color inside the lines, not following a pattern to the end is called 'being inspired' to make something more to my style! 4. If I buy yarn with no project in mind, eventually a project will present itself - I have faith (hahahaha)! Not 5. If I make things for others I get so caught up in everything they might hate about it I makes me anxious and I quit, so I make everything for myself, and if someone likes it I give it to them. Still not 5. Your brown knitted shawl is GORGEOUS! Most yarn shops don't even acknowledge crocheters, so I'd venture to say the superiority is on the knitters side of things - at the yarn shop those who say they do both can't remember the last time they crocheted anything. They both take two hands, yarn, and time, and they are all wonderful! 5. I offer to teach people to crochet for free - only my sister let me teach her, but she never uses it. Not 6. When my local yarn shop switched ownership the sale lasted 6 weeks and the yarn got cheaper and cheaper - at the end even the NORO was half price! I don't look for sales, but I saved (? spent) hundreds of dollars! I call that value yarn. 6. Anywhere I have to wait in line, or wait for people who never learned to manage their time - how rude. But I get a lot of crochet done...

I am not ashamed to say that I yesterday bought more yarn and kind of sneaked it into the house. If he had asked, I would have told him, and he is very supportive. It's that I put myself on a yarn diet, and well I wasn't supposed to be buying any more yarn right now. My score was 22.

I have 18 of them! But, I'm basically a knitter that loves to crochet if only I could keep my edges straight. I'm lefthanded so that presents additional issues, but not with knitting! Learned to knit when I was 7 yrs old and taught myself to crochet at 23. So whenever you used the word "crochet" in your 28 items, I chose to hear "crochet or knitting"............ And OBTW I am one of those lucky people that can crochet, knit, read, eat in the car, the train, the bus, the RV. or boat! AND oh the war rages on: inline vs. tapered. I'm a tapered only chrocheter. Love your channel.

OMG! I just came back from a mini vacation and I brought a project to do while sitting in the car! I also worked on it while sitting out on the deck/ patio while listening to birds in a quiet peaceful location! No tv! But I was making a little granny square chicken so I could give it to my sister-in-law who was with me on this trip! I finished it and she was thrilled! By-the-way, you were the person who turned me on to the crocheter who designed it!😁❤️

I’m guilty of most but the one that really gets me, and I thought I was alone in this one and probably nuts about, is getting too emotionally attached to my projects to sell them. I have made several items and gifted them to family, and a few of those I will not make anything for again, but yes I thought I was NUTS in feeling that way about what I make. So glad to know I’m not the only “NUT” out there. Thanks Elise. 😊

I can relate to most of your points and I've been crocheting less than a year! In fact, I'm crocheting as I listen to you, and you know the one about seeing a mistake but not frogging it and you keep going? Well, here I am on a return row and see a pretty obvious mistake a row back, so I overcame my natural instinct to ignore it (who's going to notice it in the overall project???) and I actually frogged back to the mistake. I did cut the yarn at the end of the row so I'm hoping my new, mistake-less row will have enough yarn. :) Love the thought you put into this. AND, it's nice to know we're not alone in our little weirdnesses.

I'm a mom of two. I definitely crochet past bed time when they are both asleep. Sometimes I wake up earlier on purpose just to have my own quiet time to crochet. And I can totally relate to being attached to a project. My 4 year old always wants to have what I'm crocheting. So until now, I never crocheted anything that belongs to me from beginning to end.

I have been a crocheter for 50+ years and surprised myself that I only got 8 out of the 28. I used to be the queen of fudging my crochet, and I sometimes still do this, but now I realize if I just fix it when I see it, I will be much happier with myself (and my project) down the road.

I do a lot of different crafts so I looked at these things over all of them. I got eight out of 28, plus two I sort of do. In regards to tv/movies, I don't have a problem watching a movie for the first time without crocheting/knitting, but if I want to crochet or knit I'll put on a movie I've seen many times and more listen to it than watch it. It satisfies the need for my hands to do something whilst my mind is occupied.

19, and I also knit and found this video applies to knitters as well. I'm pretty picky, and often I judge a mistake. If I can notice it, I'll frog an entire project. If I can't find the mistake, but know the stitch count is off, I create or delete a stitch or two wherever it's least noticeable. And lastly, that is my dream vacation as well. Living in CA in the Bay Area, there's not a whole lot of days to wear warm clothing, and there aren't that many LYSs either. That's one of the reasons I began crocheting a few years back because I feel crochet lends itself better with household furnishings that require more stability. And there's always a use for them no matter the climate.

For the car sickness: my parents got me something called 'acustraps'. They're straps which you put on tightly on a certain point around your wrists. They work in an acupressure-kind of way, apparently, to combat the motion sickness. I didn't quite believe they would work, but for me they really did. And I immediately know if I've put hem on wrong too, because then I do get sick. Maybe worth looking into?

I got 26. I sometimes visit my friend and crochet mentor who lives a few hours away just so we can crochet together and catch up. She's blind so she loves when I come because that means she can go to the store and restock her yarn for projects. I also noticed that we have certain number sets we like to count our stitches by. I count mine in multiples of 3.

"Binge-watching shows to crochet"....That may in fact be what's happening right now.... :D I've never had any problem giving away crochet items. I enjoy the making, not the having, and if someone enjoys it, well, I can always make another one! I have a few that are mine (a gambeson, a temperature blanket, and a scarf), but after that, meh, if it brings you joy you can have it. Doesn't hurt that I'm dabbling in Irish crochet, which is a lot of little motifs that you connect later--I can make a rose in twenty minutes, so giving one away isn't a huge sacrifice! This does feed into the "fishing for compliments" thing. I don't think it's fishing for compliments. Crochet takes time, effort, and skill, and it makes sense that we want people to appreciate it. And there's nothing that hurts quite as bad as spending dozens or even hundreds of hours on a project (blankets are big), only to have the person receiving it go "Oh, that's nice" and set it aside like it's nothing. It's really, really hard not to take that personally.

So for the yarn sale one, I actually don’t keep track of it. However, when I go to the thrift shop and see a really nice skein of yarn (ex.hand dyed merino wool, and yes I’ve found this multiple times) I do buy it, even if I don’t have a project in mind. It’s hard for me to resist when it’s $1 and usually it’s over $20 at a local yarn shop

Just had to add about the crochet hook thing. I started crocheting in 1970. I know, I am old, and for all that time I used the same set of Boye metal hooks. Then around 2015 or 16, I started getting a lot of thumb pain from holding those metal hooks. So I started researching and found a whole new world of ergonomic crochet hooks. I started with the ones from Hobby Lobby, which I have to say that for $2.99, were pretty good. But then I caught the hook bug and started my search for the absolute perfect crochet hook. Furls Odyssey, Tulip Etimo Rose, Clover Amours, I bought them all. Then I started collecting BQueen hooks, which I love and are my go to hooks, but unfortunately the owners house burned down and they had to close their business. So I never got a complete set unfortunately. But now I am looking into some other hooks with wooden handles and Clover Amour tips. I think it is a sickness that I have.

I can add one I bet we’ve all done, and that’s “crochet until it hurts.” And the “it” can be so many things or combination thereof. Eyes, back, wrists, hands, where you stab your fingertip with the hook, elbows… I REALLY try not to, and remind myself it’s supposed to be fun… but in a combination with the “just one more row/round” mentality, I can really make myself sore.
