#1 What is Critical Pedagogy? Why is it important?

Welcome to the first video in a series on critical pedagogy. In this video I talk about what critical pedagogy is, why it is important and discuss use an example of student fees to discuss the impact of oppression on learners. I talk about critical pedagogy as a way of theorising education and, in a practical way, making real changes to educational systems, pedagogies and other practices that influence the system. Thank you for this video on Critical Pedagogy! I am brushing up on my knowledge and understanding of this theoretical canon. What stands out is that the work of Freire, Giroux and Baum’s helps us to be mindful of understanding oppression and hegemony and how we can understand on how we can help others realize their agency and personal transformation.

Care to explain what you mean by ‘agency’? Although fascinated by critical pedagogy, I’m trying to find reason for studying of critical pedagogy beyond the critic of power structures.
